Car Tire On Front

Before deciding to convert my ride to a trike I researched trike dynamics to include this site. I was able to obtain good information here. The one question I have not found is an answer for is would a car tire on the front wheel proved more traction than a motorcycle tire because of the amount of contact patch during a turn?

That’s a good question, as on a scooter forum I belong to, I got into a argument about auto tires on bikes? Some swear it’s the best thing since sliced bread , while others don’t think so?

This is my opinion, so don’t shoot me, I’m too old to harvest, being Avon offers a front tire with a harder sidewall , as trikes stay flat, I would feel more secure with a rounded bike tire vs a flat surface tire as to less friction. I’ve hammered thru some turns and never slid the front, wet or dry roads. I am going to try the Avon as I’m due for the replacement. The Dunlop worked just fine for me, no complaints

Car doughnuts look inviting if you can find the size. Most are looking to use a car tire due to mileage increase . As on my 2 wheeler, I get the same mileage on the rear as I do on the trikes front tire, 12k .plus the $150 is not going to brake the bank.

I do not think there is a trike out there that will accommodate a car tire on the front. The Avon Cobra trike tire is touted to be the best by some, I've run it now for 5 or 6 thousand miles, I'm not that impressed. Hannigan builds a front suspension that will accommodate a special front tire with a large 'foot print'. I've read that it works really well and the tire will give you many miles. However, be prepared to pay up front for this upgrade if you ride a Hannigan. Even 'if' there was a car tire out there, not sure I'd run it on the front of my trike, but that's just me. I'm sure there will be others that will have good information, stay tuned.

The reason for the curved side wall on a two wheeler is the lean necessary to change direction with the curved side wall maintaining a significant contact patch. The trike on the other hand has to be held into the turn due to gyroscopic precession. The distance between the forks would need to be increased to mount a car tire on the front. Then you can order three car tires.
