    Default Good price? Good model?

Here I am again looking at the Spyders. My Honda dealer has a used 2016 with all the bells and whistles, around 3500 miles, maybe. Previous owner added the trunk rack and highway pegs (that have the red spyder on them) and I don’t know what all else. It is immaculate cosmetically. Their first deal to me was $17,500 although they had a tag on it for $21,999. We didn’t discuss trade-in of my 2008 Gold Wing Motor Trike Adventure kit.

I told him if it was still there after next week I would like to drive it around for a couple of hours instead of just a quick up and down the highway...they said no problem.

The guy originally bought it at this Honda shop then traded it in at the local Harley shop on something. My Honda dealer has sold this guy several bikes - they say he’s always hunting something different..never keeps the same bike very long. The Honda dealer has a deal with the Harley dealer that anything Harley takes in on trade they pass it off to the Honda dealer. That’s how the Honda dealer ended up with the same bike back. Our Harley dealer does not keep any used bikes/trikes.

So, what do you guys say about the price?

And...did this year model have any known bad problems that might have been corrected in the 2017 or 2018?

    Thanks..appreciate your input....pros and cons.

Thanks for the response. It’s an RT - touring. Can’t remember if its the Limited or not. Isn’t the only difference between the RT and RT Limited some extra chrome? The Spyder is a whole new animal to me having been on Jap bikes since 1979. I have visited SpyderRiders website but did not register - just lurked a bit.

Carla, I ride a 2017 F3, and my wife rode two different RTs. A 2011 RT and a 2014 RT Limited. She loved both of them. I think it's a good, fair price on the 2016 RT, especially if it's a Limited. Go for it, you will love it. We have not had any issues with any of our 3 Spyders at this point, and we do ride them a lot (she put about 20K on each Spyder before upgrading).

She's now riding a F3-T and loves the Hot Rod, but sure missed the space for traveling (F3s have smaller bags and front box to make them lighter, which limits how much we can pack on). Yes, we have put a trailer hitch on it to pull a trailer now........

Is it the SE model RT Limited?

If its the SE model RT limited and has extra farkles on it to its not a bad deal. Try to get them lower then jump on the price.

MAke sure all the things work on the bike. too Stereo,Tires, brakes etc. If it good its up to you.

Test ride the bike too make sure if it something you want and like.

OJ... have you found it necessary to do all the stuff that people suggest to do with Spyders.... put on car tires all around, laser alignment, Baja Ron sway bar, etc?

You should try riding the Spyder and see if the extra bar and tires are needed.

For me I did add BaJa RON bar, shock adjusters and tires. Air pressure sure makes a big difference too.

But for some the stock setup is just fine for them

I'm assuming the Honda dealer will service the spyder right? I know the Honda dealer won't touch your trike, which is a big reason your thinking about trading.

We didn't do any of the things that the Spyder enthusiast say need to be done. My wife said both of her RTs handled fine and we never had a problem with either of her bikes. We run stock including the tires. Now if you want to take it up a notch or two in the handling department, then you do the car tires/sway bar and laser alignment. Those things will make it handle even better than it does stock. We never felt that there was a need for spending the extra money. That doesn't mean we won't consider the car tires when the next set wear out (they are cheaper than stock), but it doesn't mean we will switch either. Stock tires have worked well for us and the handling has been fine in their stock form. She was well pleased with her "stock" Spyders.......Now for the "rest of the story", we both have F3s now, and both are modified with the above items, except for car tires. The F3 is the Hot Rod, so if you go F3, you go Hot Rod, and we did!

Carla,if it is an RT limited it will be the SE model as that is the only way it comes. I think that is a great price on a low mileage Spyder RTL. Remember that model cost over $30,000 new. I wouldn't worry about him servicing it as unless he is a Spyder dealer he wont know anything about it.Make friends with your local Can Am Spyder dealer.

As to " all the stuff other Spyder riders add". You don't have to add any of that stuff and until you have some miles under your belt on it I wouldn't add anything. When the tires wear out,you can think about switching to car tires. The Spyder has an automotive type rim so car tires go right on. Your rear tire will wear out first. Add a sway bay if you want to ride hard,if not don't. Wait till you know your machine and what you want it to do before you make any real changes. I think you will really enjoy the Spyder and that 2016 has the new 3 cylinder motor and 6 speed trans. They ride really well and long days in the saddle are really possible. I have done many 12 hr days on mine. It is the original seat and I put a gel pad in it. I put lots of stuff on mine but I've had it almost 3 years and 35,000 miles.

I think personally that the Spyder models of 2012 and before needed the extras but from 2013 and above they don't unless you want to take it up a notch. There is a clear division in handling. But one item that really did make a marked improvement was going to a car tire on the rear for our 16 RTLT. The only thing about going car tire though is finding someone that will do it. We did and switched where we go for all service now. But we have yet to put any other aftermarket handling upgrades like we did on the 12 model.

Apologies for not following up. I did get a good ride on it.

    Pros:

I thought it comfortable, peppy, and handled well at interstate speed.

It had very good wind protection which I appreciate a lot.

Particularly enjoyed not having to hold a clutch in at stop lights.

The heated grips were so dang hot they left red marks on my hand....couldn’t find where to turn them off! Didn’t want to be pushing buttons and have something go wrong while I was out by myself on it.

I love the look of the Spyder - it’s so different and is an eye-catcher.

    Cons:

I felt it was fairly hard to push around curves at speed and slow circles and thought it might be a pretty tiresome workout after a full day’s riding in the hills.

The worst con: Not enough storage space for ME for a long-distance trip. I used to be able to pack really light on a 2-wheeler but can’t seem to get back to that. The storage space in front and back are basically deep holes. Knowing me, whatever I needed at the moment would invariably be on the bottom. It did have the little organizer shelf for the rear trunk. The side bags are nice to have but not real spacey. There is no place to put the full-face modular helmet except on the passenger seat. For that matter I would probably wind up strapping my jacket to that seat when it got too hot after a cold morning start.

    Summary:

I would really like to have it as a “local” day ride vehicle, sitting next to my Gold Wing trike. But for me, living so far from where I want to ride - aka 125-300 miles in any direction - I just don’t see it as a long-distance choice as compared to my GL1800 MotorTrike. Then too, the Gold Wing is set up exactly as I want it and is very comfortable for short or long-distance rides and has lots of storage space.

    Bottom line:

I decided against trading the trike for the Spyder. The Honda dealer said he would service my trike although their past stance was that they would not touch a trike. They have changed service managers and mechanics and now have a mechanic who “can do it all”. Ha! I don’t know if I’d trust them to put it up on a lift. I still have a TrikeTalk friend who lives 125 miles from me that has serviced the trike before and if I can get it to him (which has become a problem this past year), and he is still willing, I trust him completely.

Thanks everyone for your patience answering my many questions.
