Default Anyone triked a Harley Ultra CVO

Hi all new to forum.considering a trike so wife will come on trips with me.she is to nervous on 2 wheels.i don’t no weather to buy a Tri glide or hv my 2012 Ultra CVO triked.Has anyone converted a CVO to a trike.Which way elf b the most comfortable for a passenger.how was the paint matched and were you happy overall.I no the triglide is basic for the price tag.Its even below the ultra limited.any advice most welcome.Any pictures of yr triked CVO wld be most appreciated.I hv never been on a trike as in Ireland we only hv 3 HD dealers and market to small to justify a demo to try out.i suppose my main worry is comfort.we hv a lot of secondary roads with turns twists and pot holes.I can see the popularity in America.large straight wide roads.Any feed back and advice most welcome.

I looked at converting my '12 Ultra to a trike. I have Parkinson's and had no choice, can't balance on 2 anymore. Visited various manufactures, read a lot and weighed the various options in doing a conversion. After checking the numbers of things I'd have to do to convert my Ultra (reverse, triple tree, increasing power, etc) it was going to cost just about the same to convert as it was to buy a new TG. Then I got hold of a NADA and KBB book and the depreciation factor nailed it....bought a new '13 TG.

Thanks for reply,Texan.my problem is I hv a CVO with 1800cc engine,stage1,Screaming Eagle Air Filter,v+h monster ovals,Heated Grips and seats and all the chrome.also 1800 cc engine.colour coded dash.wld probably spend €5/10k to come near CVO.trade in value for CVO is dismal after what she cost New.On the other hand id Hv brand new bike with 1 year guarantee with triglide.my head is dried😳

Michael, Welcome to Trike Talk Forum. There are a lot of conversion kits for the CVO since it is basically the same as the base model in construction. You paint to match and can keep your chrome add-ons, and big inches too. If you are looking for passenger comfort you might be looking for an IRS type rear suspension. In alphabetical order: CSC, Champion, DFT, Motortrike, Hannigan, Lehman, Roadsmith are all mainline kits for you motorcycle. Good luck in Ireland and how is MOT over there ?

Thanks for advice Lee.is a conversation a better option then a triglide.some roads are not great over here.i no if it’s uncomfortable wife won’t like and conversion wld hv been a waste.the Tri Glide is solid so I presume on bad roads it may be very choppy.independent shd be way better but is it harder to maintain.

I believe that Hannigan Motorsports has one of their conversions in their showroom. At least they use to.

Certainly the IRS type conversion would give a much better ride. I guess the first thing you need to know is who will build it and who can service it locally.

Getting IRS won't complicate maintenance any and it will improve the ride. Look at it this way. Would you want a car with a solid rear suspension or one with independent rear suspension? You will be going over the same roads regardless of which one you get. I have IRS on my trike and for me I wouldn't want anything else. I've ridden trikes with a solid rear end and hands down, I prefer IRS especially on rough roads. You also were concerned about color matching the conversion. I do not think you would have any problem at all paint matching a CVO. A couple years ago I was in the same spot you are in now. To convert or get a new tri. I converted and do not regret it one bit. You have already put in the money and work to get your bike the way you want it and with a new triglide, you would have a bone stock ride and would be starting all over again getting it how you want it. With a conversion, the only thing you are changing is the back end. Your engine mods will still be there. Your pipes will work and everything else you've done will still be there and functioning just as it is now. Trikes are inherently more comfortable and stable for the passenger so your wife shouldn't be complaining any. Good luck no matter what you decide and welcome aboard.

Glad I joined this forum.some great feed back.thanks for all the feed back.if ivtrike my CVO How does the braking system work.will the abs be completely different on the back.disc brakes?reason I ask is I presume I’ll be up for this recall on the abs flush out.back brake will be gone so if I go ahead and trike will I still be eligible for recall for the front.pr shd I wait for recall and then trike CVO.im edging towards triking rather than new triglide but that cld change.

Michael, every trike conversion kit has slight differences.

Some claim to retain the ABS and others don't.

I won't comment further on that.

Talk to the proposed installer about the brake system and have him explain to you the changes being made and what you can expect.

If you are overly concerned you have some homework to do.

The recall is something I cannot address other than changing out the brake fluid and clutch fluid.

Like the recall for Honda Goldwing 1800, Harley should flush the 'brake' system.

You should do your clutch system, or have it done at the same time.

I thought IRS was fully independent suspension but a crowd in Uk Colin Appleyard says theirs,I think Champion kits for Harley is semi independent.how good wld that be.for their goldwings they hv just come out with full independent suspension.i hv 3 company names in UK ENGLAND who hv been in business for a while.does anyone Hv any recommendations on them:The Trike Shop.co.uk;Trike design,co.uk and Colin Appleyard.co.uk.must look into ABS or does that matter on a Trike?

Just found out Collin Appleyard full bodied is semi independent technology with stabilizer and is an EMI Manhattan convention with 4 piston rear disc brakes. The Trike Shop does a Champion and Lehman full bodied fully independent suspension.:Trike Design who used to work for The Trike Shop but is 11 years out on his own makes their own conversion called The Brooklands. has anti roll adjustment fully independent rear suspension.the body is mounded separately to the Mudgards,so u can actually change mud guards if u damage them.they are all around the same price.the ? Is which is the best to go for 😳.Be so much easier living in America.so much choice and endless long vast roads.

I have a Champion with IRS. On a Champion trike the area over the wheel is part of the storage space accessed through the trunk and is storage space that you probably don't have if you just have a fender (mudguard) covering your tire. Check the storage capacity of the Brooklands and compare it to the Champion. If storage is important, you may be giving up some of it with the Brooklands.

I guess the decision is really yours.

Although there are really no warranty issues, other than very minor, with the American made trikes, should one arise you will have to wait for repair parts.

A manufacturer in the UK for example could readily supply parts very quick especially if he builds his own.

See if you can call his customers to get their opinions and feedback on his product.

    Default My CVO conversion

Rockie , You can check out my Screamin Eagle CVO conversion that CSC (trikes by Rodney ) did for me. Just check out some of my post and you can see the quality of work they do. I couldn't be happier with the fit and finish and the customer service the provide. The paint was done by Lemon Designs. The pics don't say enough for the ride and feel that the trike has. I did a lot of research before I made the conversion to the CSC . Best move I ever made. Name: sun5.JPG

Hi Boog, your CVO looks amazing.did u ever hv trouble with lifters going on your engine or the engine paint chipping.Id love to trike my CVO but looking at CVO site a lot seem to hv problems with booth.from 2007 up.if I go with Tri glide I’m loosing all the CVO stuff plus independent rear suspension but will hv Harley guarantee. The CVO trike is a one off though 😳

Rockie, I have not had any problems with the paint or lifters. I have seen on some Harleys that one lifter may go bad but not all at one time. You could have a problem with the run out or play in your cam bearings causing the problem for all lifters to go bad. Yes I would keep my CVO and trike the CVO. Now this is my opinion I would trike the CVO with the CSC conversion and you will have the best riding independent suspension offered on the market. Hate to think of a rigid rear axle and trying to run through curves and the handling ability you will miss. Judt more than happy with my conversion after many hours or research. Have a great day.
