HD Insurance is an agency not an insurance company. This is from their website:
At Harley-Davidson Insurance Services, we provide that service as a trusted motorcycle insurance agency that knows all about the motorcycle lifestyle.
They can place your coverage with several different carriers. Don't know for sure who they use now but several years ago I did get them to quote and they had Progressive, Dairyland, Foremost and maybe a couple others.
I was already with Foremost (had gone to them directly) and couldn't beat the pricing I had. Been with Foremost since 2005 and even with a couple claims they have treated be well - both on the claims and the renewal surcharges due to the claims.
Good luck whichever route you take.
I'm aware HD doesn't provide insurance, their current underwriter is Sentry out of Wisconsin. Just wondering if anyone has had experience with them. Would think Harley would back them since they've got their name on it.
Funny, I had Foremost quote along with several others 4 years ago and they were the highest by far. Will give them another look since they are here in my area.

Don't know the answer to that but my experience with that. About all they could do it would seem to me is intercede as your advocate if there were a claim dispute. Whether they would and whether it would do any good - who knows.
Who know the mysterious way insurance companies work anyway. Previously I had State Farm, Dairyland and Progressive. All were OK the first year but upon renewal even with no claims or tickets they went way, way up. With Foremost (for me at least) they have been very consistent with modest increases and in a few cases a slight decrease from year to year.
Good luck if finding a good policy and company for your coverage.
When I bought my Freewheeler late June, 2017, HD insurance was underwritten by Progressive & I got a better deal going with Progressive directly.
I, just a few weeks back, got a quote & found out they changed underwriters & my quote was 15-20% less than before & with a reduced deductible. I plan on using them.

Well I got four quotes today on the very same coverage and the results are interesting. HD & Markel were very close in pricing, Foremost was approx. $200/yr more than those two, and my current company Progressive is another $100/yr more than Foremost. I like Progressive, have had them for a while on two different bikes, like their storage option which saves me money in the winter, but think I will be looking at a change.
Has anyone had experience with Markel ?

Allstate was the best in my area. But when I tried to add my car and truck, they were much higher than my current insurance. A lot depends on the area you live in and the number of claims they have had to pay in that area. Progressive was highest with Foremost right under them. The HD insurance carrier at that time was between Foremost and Allstate.
2015 Tri Glide Vivid Black. Customization work in progress to make it mine-when not riding it.
I had H-D insurance on my '09 Ultra when it was through Foremost Ins. They were quite good to work with when I had an "encounter" with a road goat (aka: deer). My wife was riding with me and fortunately we didn't go down and were not injured. We tee-boned the deer and it went spinning off onto the shoulder. After a few moments, it got up and walked off into the woods were I hope the damn thing died!
It caused over $2000 damage including replacement of the front fender which had custom paint on it. Insurance paid for everything including adding the custom paint to the new fender, minus the deductible, of course. This was a totally hassle free experience which was surprising to me. So I can say that my experience with H-D/Foremost was great.
After I traded for the Tri-Glide, I changed my insurance to American Modern on the recommendation of my neighbor who happens to be the business manager at my H-D dealer. They provide an actual new replacement cost for bikes/trikes that they cover when they are no more than 2 years old. Premium is a little higher, but if my trike was wrecked or stolen right now they would replace it with a brand new 2018 model. They also reduce the deductible amount every year that you don't have a claim for up to 5 years at which time there would be no deductible.
Since I haven't had a claim with them, I can't say how it would be to work with them. Hopefully I don't have to find out!
Several insurance companies tout that coverage now. I had an unfortunate experience in Oct 2006 that totaled my 11 month old CVO Ultra. Foremost had the replacement coverage and after paying my $250 deductible they paid for a new 2007 CVO Ultra. Easy peasy . . . well all except for the crash - that sucked but fortunately we only got a couple scrapes.
Decided to go with HD since they were lowest price along with Markel, but their deductible on comprehensive was lower. Thanks to all for the input.

What are the actual annual premiums on those policies? I'm with Progressive, costs me about $350 per year. I carry a $250 deductible on collision, $100 comprehensive.
Very hard to compare rates for different states......for instance, here in Michigan we have a mandatory fee for catastrophic claim coverage which now amounts to a $170/yr surcharge. However, deducting that fee I will be paying about $260/yr for my coverage with HD where I would have paid about $490/yr with Progressive. No contest!
