If I don't take any long trips, I usually only ride around 5,000 miles a season.

That would give me a good indication of how the filter is doing.

I use that Mobil 1 extended filter, along with their oil, in both cars & only change it once a year, driving 8-12,000 miles a year, without issue. In that year, the cars will loose a 1/4 to 1/2 a quart.

I've had my car since new & it's now 14 years old. After 3,000 miles I switched to full synthetic oil & have never had engine issues or oil usage(knock on wood).

There's actually more things that affect the oil filter than miles. Stop and go traffic, lots of cold starts, etc.

I think I'd be less inclined to do "5k of around town miles" on a filter than 20k of "Highway miles".

I think the cold starts are hard on oil and the whole engine. Condensation, sludge pickup etc are all accentuated by a cold start.

Gonna be interesting to see how the filter looks after a year (5k miles) of around town driving. I'll be looking forward to those pics. I am like a sponge, always ready to soak up new info.

    Just my humble opinion.

I agree with what your saying. Even my "around town" riding is about 30-40% highway at 55 or above, so I get a good mix. 2 of my sons are in various directions 35 & 45 miles away. I just figured if that filter can take 12,000 miles on my wife's car, it could handle 5,000 on my FW, knowing the trike miles are rougher that the car miles.

Mobil says 20,000 miles or a year & I am going to call them on it.

I like to change my oil prior to parking the trike for winter storage, as I have always heard it is not good to let the very used oil sit in the engine, but this past winter, I have not had the FW sit more than 2 weeks. My 2 wheel bikes always sat for a couple month without use. I have known bikers that would drain the used oil in the fall & put in conventional oil, then drain it in the spring & install the synthetic he used. Then he used that drained unused oil in mowers & such.

We biker/riders are a quirky bunch!

While we are on oil filters, when I put the Mobil 1 extended on, I will autopsy the HD chrome 1 the dealer installed at the 1,000 mile service. it will have around 4,000 miles on it.

    Be careful when doing this

The metal is sharp and not very forgiving

Stop me if I'm WRONG here, but If we go "many 1000's of miles on the same filter, doesn't that filter get plugged up, and does not filter like it does when replaced at a 3000 miles interval ??

    (Just my "personal thinking" here)

I feel that a new filter will "filter" out impurities, in the oil flow much better then a plugged up, very high mileage, ..

Please correct me if I'm wrong......... Thank all!

Mike if you use a saw [hack] to dissect it you'll have medal fillings all over the filter medium....Happen to me once.....That was one messy waist of time...The next time i used a P38...Still messy but no fillings inside just brown filter medium...

You are basically correct, most filters have a bypass that allows oil to still flow if clogged. I think the OP is doing an experiment with a filter that says it can go 20k.

Not sure I'd do that, but, I'm curious about the results.

    Good answer Bob

I use an old tailpipe cutter

I guess if you have a big pipe cutter you could use that

I don't consider 5,000 miles high mileage & have used these filters on my car for years.

I urge you to do what you feel is best.

5,000 miles on a quality filter is not a problem, unless your using crude.
