    Default Let's Talk Oil Filters!

I know what your thinking. The next best thing to an oil thread is an oil filter thread.

I had said before I was going to stick with HD oil filters, but I had some money to spend at Walmart & got the last 2 quarts of Quicksilver 20w-50 oil.I then looked at K&N oil filters & compared them to the Mobil 1 extended performance filters & picked a Mobil 1 M1-102A for $9.99.

The quality just looked very solid.

Anyone try them before & if you did, what are your thoughts?

That's good to hear. Yes I am a trouble maker, it's a lot more fun.

Those things just feel like a brick compared to others

I would not run any filter 20,000 miles, but thats just me. Once a year would be nice though.

Lol, like HD sayin run the oil 5k between oil changes?

Not on any of my bikes

I urge everyone to cut open at least 1 oil filter and lay the media out take a look at how much debris is in there

This will confirm if your filter is doing its job

Case in point, when my 96 inch Streetbob blew up, I cut the filter open and saved the brass material for the HD inspectors

They knew right away that the cam plate and bushings had let go

I saved that crap for a couple years, I dunno why but that was a HD filter doing its job

The engine never quit running, tho the heads, valves, pistons even the oil ing jets looked like they were sand blasted, plus the cam plate and oil pump were cracked

IMO if you have an engine with TOO much crank run out even the best oil and filter aint going to save it

Michael, dont quote me but I think the Mobil filters are sourced out to Champion Labs, the same folks making H D filters

The Mobil filters I do believe have a stouter metal skin, the filter media is as good as HD and the drain back valve is silicone, IMO a better design

I have cut them open as well as H d filters

I have too much time on my hands, and I want to know what makes things work

I think I heard that before. Every thing about them look good to me.

Now my next question Jack, do you fill yours 1/2 up with oil?

I told you I was a trouble maker.

Nah, I did at 1 time but it got messy

I did not wait for the oil to soak in

On a brand new build back in the old days, I would, plus we packed the oil pumps with vaseline

Before the TC and M8 the pumps were external on the rs rear of the crank case

As far as 5,000 miles on the oil, I think the M8 having a 5 quart capacity helps a lot.

I definitely would not do that on a TC, with barely 4 quarts.

Even on a twin cooled Harley I would struggle going 5k on the oil

I bet I catch a lot of flak over that but IMO until oil becomes ridiculous in price I will stick to my 3k interval

I had a Lucas Oil Rep. in CA a few days after I bought my Freewheeler tell me their full synthetic high performance 20W50 oil could do 5,000 mile intervals easily, with a quality filter.

They sent me 3 cases so it's getting tested in all 3 holes and so far I really am impressed.

My clutch & tranny love it.

I'm also at the 3,000 mile (or less) oil/filter change stage............Oil/ filter doesn't cost that much, and to let a bike go well over 3000 miles with the same filter/oil doesn't make me feel too good.............

Heck, I've had a few times that if I know I'm going on a very long ride, and even though I've only got maybe 1-2,000 miles on her, I have change the oil, it just makes me feel much better....

Just last week, after bike sat for five/six months (winter hibernation period) I jacked her up, placed four inch blocks under each wheel.. (still cold, I opened up oil plug/removed filter and let it just drain, and at the same time I replaced all six spark plugs.....Took her out for my first ride yesterday of the season, Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa what a wonderful feeling, for approx. 38 miles....I may even take her out today, [7:45 AM NOW] if it gets warm again, actually now that I'm thinking about it, I'm going out to garage, and a put battery charger on it, now, so I'll know it has full power...LIFE IS GOOD!

As for the 5k thing, I do the oil at 2.5k and all three holes at 5k (Regardless of how many miles, I do all three in the spring, any winter condensation is gone before riding season)

I can't speak for the Mobil 1, I will say I use the K&N because I like the nut on the end to make removal easy.

I do like the feature of the nut for removal, but I put my filters on by hand & never have trouble removing them. It amazes me how dealers still have people way over tighten oil filters. I install them just like the instructions state.

i bought a Harley oil filter wrench, fits the filter really well and I've never had an issue getting a filter off. I will say however, I routinely poke a hole in the filter top and bottom, near the middle of the filter, before I remove it to let it drain. I have a piece of thin plastic, actually a cooking "cutting board" that I put under the filter and let the oil run down to my Harley catch tray. Then I use a rag and catch what drips. Really clean and if you let the filter drain well, there's not much dripping.

An added benefit of poking the holes (I use a small Phillips screw driver), is that if the filter is too tight, you can use the holes and the Phillips screw driver to get more leverage even with the filter wrench on the end.

The holes in the filter has been a good idea since the Evo days

The FXR had a good idea under the bike, but this was a bad location and some of the filter mounts came loose and filters were dragged

You would think with all the progress HD has made they could come up with a clean oil filter change by now HAAAAAAAA

Ok, Mobil 1 says their extended FILTER can go 20,000 miles.

I will leave it on for the season, change it out & cut it open to see how full/clogged the filter media is.

I will change to it if it ever quits raining here
