Removing flaking tank liner

Not sure if this goes here if not please move to proper tab.Anyway my neighbor has a gas tank off his Softail that the liner is starting to flake off,anyone have any experience with removing old liner,Thanks

Acetone, but be careful on the paint

Some steelies or steel nuts in the tank and shake it up good will help break it loose

I just did a Sporty tank this same way, turned out nice and clean

Based on my experience in OPE, it's best to replace the tank. Once the coating is penetrated, the rust will continue. I know of no treatment that will halt the process. There may be one, but I never researched for one being that lawn equipment parts weren't that expensive, plus I usually had plenty of dead units to scavenge from. A motorcycle fuel tank is probably a different animal, but a wreaking yard (?) may be worth a visit.

Almost impossible to remove the liner material entirely. Best one can hope for is to do like Jack suggests, then get ahold of an inspection camera and survey the inside of the tank, including along any/all seams.

I've used Evapo Rust and a box of Walmart BB's to success in a rusty m/c tank not long ago. Gonna be considerably harder on a "Kreemed/sealed" tank though, no doubt.

Additionally, if the sealer was applied over existing rust, or because of rust causing a leak, it might be tank replace time?

Softail tanks are almost a "dime a dozen" on the flea market/swap scene...

Important Note: If using a paint stripper containing Methylene Chloride (ie Goof Off, etc.): BE VERY CAREFULL!!! This stuff is deadly. Use outdoors!

This tank was damaged in an accident the dent is causing the sealer to crack and flake off,its a late model tank so i doubt if rust is the issue. He is a body man so he is used to handling harsh chemicals,I will pass along the info.Thanks for your help.

If you go to the Por-15 site you can get a kit that will clean all the liner and any rust in the tank. I have used it for years on a lot of tanks I have repaired or customized for customers. Just be sure to wrap around tank filler hole and follow the instructions and you will have a liner in the tank that is better than factory. It works and stays in the tank and no future of turning loose. (Ron)
