Default My wife is having a TG Fit issue

Hi folks. I haven't been on for a while, but I received a lot of help when asking for advice on how to help my wife Nancy learn to ride a Tri Glide. FWIW, that has been a sucess & she absolutely LOVES the trike!

She rides a 17 TG. She is 5'2" ~ 5'3" tall, and we have made some changes to the trike to better fit her: a lowered windshield, HD reach handlebars, I installed DK's lift kit & florrboard spacers, also an extended rear shifter (so the heel shifter is back off the floorboard more). All have worked well.

We have another hurdle though: her right knee/thigh area is either in contact with the air cleaner cover or barely off it. The DK kit to move the floorboards out helped this, but we need more. Nancy has a medical condition where heat really bothers her & the AC cover gets warm enough to cause discomfort her when she's in contact with it.

I'm looking for suggestions on alternative intakes that would provide more room for her knee. In particular, I'm looking at the HD Heavy Breather kits - the units that sort of "snorkel" towards the front of the bike. Has anyone with a similar issue - or trying to help fit someone with a similar issue - tried one of these kits with sucess? At $400 plus a tune it's a bigger gamble than we would like to make without some advice. From the pictures on HD's site it looks like their might be more room but I can't completely tell.

Any advice on this unit or something else is apprciated. Thank you!!

The Outlaw Air Cleaner kit from D K Customs should do the trick for you

It gives you more leg room, it wont be as hot, plus it will breath better

The forward facing do give a bit better clearance, you need to use the shorty filter so it doesn't run into the lower fairing.

You can see them at this LINK.

The lowest profile air cleaner on the market is the 587's. You can see them at this LINK.

There is not a lower profile Air Cleaner that will fit on the '17 Tri-Glide. This should get her knee off of it.

There are quite a few different looks....I would not recommend any of the Bobber covers, nor either of the transparent covers, those all add a little width to the air cleaner. There are plenty of other really nice choices at that link.

Feel free to call or email with any questions.

I have, & I contacted DK & asked the question. Dwayne returned & told me the 587 models were the lowest profile on the market & would offer the greatest amount of leg clearance. Those are an option - but I still wonder if one of the forward facing units - like DK's 636V - would offer her more room.

Our bikes are in storage at the dealer so they aren't accessible, but tomorrow afternoon we're going up there & see where her knee & calf aligns on one of the showroom trikes. Maybe it would be a good idea for me to take a picture or 2. She comments on it enough when riding that I'd like to make a change.

Edit: Kevin's response above was posted while I was working on this one. LOL!

My advice would be give Kevin of DK Customs a call he knows what he is doing when it comes to changing air intakes and air filter systems without hurting performance I'm sure he can be a huge help. He is good people talk to him. He has really help me out in the past. Fred Guess what I added was already been done typed the response and was taken away from my computer for an hour or so. I was right he is the man to talk to. Fred

It all depends on where her leg/knee is crossing the air cleaner.

The 636v has nothing behind the circle of the throttle body...so lots of space there.

On the 636v, at the back of the circle of the throttle body, it sticks out 3.5", and at the front of the circle of the throttle body it sticks out 4".

So as long as her leg/knee never crosses that 2.5" diameter circle straight out from the center of the throttle body, there will be no issue.

The 587 only sticks out 2" front the throttle body, so it is almost 2" more tucked in at the center of the throttle body than the 636v.

I think it is important for her to sit on a Tri-Glide and for you to look where her leg naturally crosses...both while resting on the floorboard, and when applying the rear brakes.

Everyone is different how they sit. I'm 5' 11", but slouch a lot, and my leg crosses the 636v, mostly under it...but there are definitely times when by leg is up against it.

That would be worth a 1000 words. From those, Kevin or Devin should be able to get you the most bang for your buck.

As for tuning, you can probably get by with the HD stage one download.

    Hey Fuzzy!

.....I don't know if this is of any value to your wifes' leg comfort......but I'll flash it to you just in case:

....You may wish to consider (along with the proper air breather of course) getting the HD Long Angle adjustable Highway Peg Mount Kit

(Part Number 50829-07A) and add the front pegs of choice.

.......I got these just to have highway pegs originally so I could stick my feet in the air like everybody else....BUT, after I installed them I found that by dropping them lower than most do (but a little higher than the floor pads) = It now allowed me to place my heels on the floor pad and rest the front of my boots on the highway pegs while driving normally..........................Not too usefull for resting my feet high in the air, but was excellent to relocate my feet position while driving....This allowed my legs to totally relax and open much wider while riding and eliminated all fatigue normally experienced when feet are on floor alone....this also helps right leg clear air breather FOR SURE while riding!

.........You may likely know all about this stuff anyway, but I just thought I'd pass it along.

..........By the way, I am 5'6" tall and very aware of possible leg comfort issues on the 2016 TG.............(I'm sure its the same for your TG too)

...raise hwy pegs location a liittle higher than in pic below which is just a HD website part pic:

    Kevin,

I rode my Tri-Glide into the shop today and need to make a correction to my above post on where my leg crosses the center of the throttle body.

I was thinking about my Sportster when I stated where my leg crossed the throttle body.

On my Tri-Glide, my calf goes right across the center of the throttle body...pretty much does not matter where it is on the floorboard or highway pegs...some part of my calf is cross the center of it.
