Issue with the trike today?

Went on a ride today with the HOG group. Stopped at a gas station for gas for a guy riding a Sportster. When I went to start the trike., It wouldn't start. No starter motor, nothing. Had the clutch pulled, Brake on, in gear. Nothing. Had to put it in Neutral to get it to start. any way. later on the ride we all stopped for gas, I was filling up the tank, I was rocking the trike back and forth to get the air bubble out. Then the siren started to chirp, like the key fob wasn't close by. It was in my pocket. But the trike started in gear, brake on clutch pulled. I was thinking that my Key fob battery was dying on me. When I got home, I changed out the batteries of both fob's. I really didn't have time to check it out. Anyone else have this happen to them?

If the key fob battery is bad, putting it in neutral is not going to fix it.

Maybe your clutch switch is going bad. Have you changed handle bars or grips recently?

I have a 17 without the alarm, But if i shake/rock the trike with the pod next to it the blinking red security light will go on steady, So i'm assuming if i had the alarm it would chirp.. Also if i should hit the start button an instance before i pull in the clutch and step on the brake all the way [in gear] it wont start... Try it yourself...Hold the start button down then while still holding the button down 'Pull in the clutch and step on the brake..

It won't start, Now come off the start button while still holding the clutch and brake, And press the start button again.....It will start...

I did changed out the grips and chrome switch housings and covers late last fall. Been working alright since. But just today it didn't work for some reason. I always start it in gear, foot on the brake, Clutch disengaged. But it didn't work that one time. After I fueled it up, It started normally. Having my Fob in the vicinity of the trike should have been recognized by the trike that it was there, and shouldn't have started chirping. Done it a million times. (Had 17 Harleys in my life time). PS. Just went out and shook the hell out of the trike. No chirping. That's after a battery change in the Fob's

If the battery in the fob is dead, it's like it's not there.

Leave the fob away from the trike & turn the switch on & it will tell you to enter your pin #.

I was going through fob batteries the first few months I had my trike. Finally figured out having it in the same pocket, or right next to my I-phone was somehow killing the life of those batteries.

I change my battery every couple years.

I always start my bike in neutral with the clutch lever pulled in. Just a habit I got use to. Never tried starting in gear - have no reason to.

I always park a Trike in gear, And hence start it in gear....The reason is two of my x-trike's taught me not to trust the park brake from holding the trike's from rolling away,

Now so far my with my third trike 2017 the park brake seems to hold properly , But its a ingrain habit after over 10 years owning trikes and after learning that trikes will roll-away for me to always park in gear..

Sounds like your switch pack may be going out....see if it happens a few more times. Unfortunately, if you can't get it to duplicate at the dealership, they are not going to fix it under warranty.

The alarm probably was your fob battery getting weak.

That's what I said. Changing bars/grips, it's real easy to get it out of alignment.

That's why the trick of putting a shim/piece of cardboard in there before taking it apart can really keep it from getting broke/misaligned.

Call ahead, these switch paks are failing in higher numbers

Keep water away from the switches when washing also, they are not sealed very good IMO

My 15 had a bad switch in 3k miles

Had the switch pack replaced on my 17 about a month ago,it was on back order for more than 4 months.

Also with the fobs, if there is some electronic interference, the fob won't work. Happened to me at a gas station in Rawlings, Wy. The gas station had a security system. Had to push the bike away from the station.

Out on a ride today. Start fine in the garage. After 60-70 miles, stopped at a kwik shop for a break. went to start it and it wouldn't start again. Had to start in neutral. Got home, shut it off. went to start it, worked fine. I think you got it nailed Kevin. Got an appointment for an oil change next week. I'll call tomorrow to see if they have the switch pak in stock.

Went to the dealer today to inform them of my issue. The service writer said they just start the trike's in neutral. I told him that will work, no problem. But It's suppose to work in gear. He had to go talk to a mechanic about that. He checked for codes. No codes. Wednesday they will put it on a computer to see if the switch was working. Went into the dealer store to shop. Came back out, wouldn't start. Called the service guy out to show him. First time he has seen that, he said. Right. Speaking of water away from the switches. I bought the Trike at Black hills HD last August during Sturgis. On my ride home we went through the worst rain storm I've been in. Definitely got water in them. ??
