    Default Tyre talk

    Ok, Im ready to take some heat for this pretty basic question, but in my defence, I've just turned 60 and its only my my second year on my wonderful TriGlide! Can anyone tell me what the standard kit to be carried is in the event I get a puncture on the road? What about this Run Flat stuff you can pump into the tyre, any good? Your advice would be appreciated.

    On my bike I use Ride-On all the time. Same for my wife's Spyder. If it helps or not I don't really care because the stuff balances the tires better than anything I've ever had. I do know the stuff can only slow down a quarter inch size hole so you don't get a tank slapper on a bike. Been there with my Indian that has a TPMS and saw I was getting a flat so had time to get off the road before it was completely flat. It saved my bacon there. They say it won't do that big a hole but it sure did help. So I use it now no matter what.

    Thers quite a few kits out there. Filling a nail/screw hole is the easy part. Most kits give ya 3-4 CO2’s. Good enough for the front tire, as 20psi will get ya to a air pump. The rear is a different story, hopping the bead is still in tack, you will need a gang of CO2’s. You can get them in 20 packs as you will go thru them. Some are screw ends and some are not! See what’s in your kit before purchasing the cartridges.

    Flats are a bikers worst enemy

    I have an old Progressive tire repair kit. It has a connector that plugs into the spark plug hole and fills the tire in 2 to 3 seconds. No need to carry a big(?) pump or a lot of co2 carts. I was looking to update my kit, but Progressive doesn't make that kit anymore.

    Here's a tip I found the hard way. Each year go to Target and buy a cheap tire repair kit - throw away all the stuff and keep the rubber cement. It does dry out over time.

    On another note. Last winter I had a slow tire leak (2 ~3 lbs per week) on my car. I got tired of dragging out the compressor every week or two so I got a Ryobi hand held digital rechargeable tire inflator. Works like a charm. Fills a tire in about 1 minute. Has enough charge for all 4 tires if needed. I don't believe in putting anything in my tires, like beads or goop. Once the weather gets better I'll have my indy see if he can fix the wheel and stop the leak. I think it's due to corrosion or maybe the rim might be out of wack from hitting too many potholes. I keep the inflator in my trunk.

    I'm a firm believer in the "Ride-On" products. Use to use Slime but that crap gets every where when you go to change or fix a tire. But I do have to confess it does work.

    I discovered "Ride-On" several years when a friend ran over some boards that fallen off a truck. Got punchers from 2-3 fairly good sized nails and lost very little air. Made the whole 5,000 mile ride without problem. I run it in all tires.

    Like many of you, I have many years on 2 wheelers. I only got a flat once and it was on the rear.

    I asked dozens of bikers & the ones that had gotten flats, 90% were on the rear tire.

    I finally found out why. The front tire will hit a nail/screw & stand it up & your rear tire hits it.

    Not deadly on tubeless tires, but it can be 1 hell of a ride on the old spoke wheels/tube type tire combination.
