Does anyone know if the GPS speed is taken from satellites or from the ECM where the speedo gets it?
Reason for the question is I've been "calibrating the speedo" using the Power Vision and no mater what pulses I put in, the speedo and the GPS stay the same speed.
The way I've been calibrating the speedo is by doing a 10 mile ride on a road that has measured mile markers and comparing the odometer miles to the 10 miles I rode.
At the start, I was 10.5 miles by odometer for a 10 mile measured mile or if you extrapolate, 105 miles for 100 mile ride or the speedo was 5% high. I've got that down to 99.6 miles on a measured 100 mile ride or the speedo is 0.4% low. (did a 115 mile burger ride today). I thought I had it, but over shot just a tad.
The power vision has the quick tune feature. You change the pulses, then reflash the ecm and retest. LOL I have an 11 mile stretch of I70 that has rest stops at both ends ... I go back and forth adjusting until I get it right (yes, I have too much time on my hands, but, pool season is coming).
I have also been playing around with the mpg calibration. That one is tougher. I keep track of everything on my vehicles, including mpg. The program I wrote to do this also calculates range per tank based on average mpg and a 6 gallon tank. For example, if I average 40 mpg, tank range will be 240 miles. Although I use average mpg's and I'm fairly sure the bike uses last fuel used per mile, I was able to get the number that the bike shows as range after a fill to be pretty close to my program's tank range. This will give me a pretty good idea of safe range. I do way more around town than highway, so my average mpg is lower than it would be on a trip. I average like 38 mpg around town and close to 50 mpg on the highway. So on a trip, I could probably easily get 275 miles on a tank, but if the bike is thinking I can only get 240, I'm getting gas sooner, so safer.
Discloser: At my age I'm stopping at 125-150 miles to use a rest room, if not sooner, but, in my neck of the woods there are lots of rides that there is no fuel for 180 miles so this is good info even if I've had to use a tree

I know ... I know ... this is really anal. I get bored during the winter months and need to keep my overactive brain amused or not so nice things happen

I just know Paws is gonna give me what for about this ... I can hear it now ... "What ever happened to just riding your bike?" Forgive her, she has no syn3 in her veins.
