Oil from trans to primary......

Me and the Mrs. went for a ride to Galina, Il. the other day. I decided to check the transmission fluid before we left. Not a drop on the rod. Had to screw it all the way in before it would register on the very tip. I used BelRay and had Syn3 in the primary. So I drove up to the Harley dealer to get a qt. of BelRay. I added 8 ounces to get it back up. I guess I have the problem with "Transference". Crap. I have an appointment July 17th. to get the fluids changed and change out the left side switch. This is just before we leave for Sturgis. I don't know now. I might call tomorrow and see if I can get in earlier. Damn.

Does the oil migrate back into the tranny if the trike isn't ridden for a couple of months? I was going to check mine (2015 Freewheeler) but I haven't ridden in a few months. Wondering if I'll get an accurate reading.

Your 15 cable pull clutch may not transfer fluid, tho I would check it to be sure

Called my dealer this morning, got my appointment moved up to tomorrow. Great. Also getting the left hand switch replaced. I'm thinking of trying to get on the list to have that oil slinger installed. (which probably won't work ) Got it set up to put HD Formula+ in the tranny and primary. So if it still has issues, it won't contaminate the primary fluid. I've been having shifting issues too. Probably the reason.

If it blows up I really dont care, H D will own it with ESP

It is so random of a deal I wish we had more numbers on who is and is not having this problem

I find it hard to believe all M8 bikes produced are seeing this problem?

Well, I took the trike in to the dealer today and had them do a 10000 mile check. I told them about the transfer of tranny fluid and to check how much fluid comes out of the primary. All said and done, the service writer said the tech. didn't check how much came out. So back to square one. Had them put in a new left hand switch pak though. Solved the starting in gear problem. Had them put Formula + in tranny and primary. I bought a couple qt's of formula + and some seals for the primary cover. Takin with me on vacation.

Jerry, that sounds like a time I took the cage for a blood transfusion. It has the paper cartridge filter. With that type of filter, your to replace it before the oil drain, due to that oil drains back to the pan when the cap is removed and the vacuum is broke. Not many techs want to take the time to understand the process nor care. As it’s just a job. You would think that being a problem the tec would of known to measure or at least remove the derby cover to see if any overflow. Even a red flag if the trans was real low.

Good plan ... might also consider an o-ring for the drains ... just incase.

The procedure as per Harley , Is for the tech to level out the fluids, [trans/primary] Then tell the the owners to put a thousand miles on it....And if it is still migrating come back again and the'll level the fluids again , And stonewall you, Till they Harley can find a fix...Which at this point in my opinion there isn't any...Iv'e been through that 3 times..

And now with only 4 hundred miles since the last time they leveled it its down below the low mark on the stick... And when i asked should i add some to fluid to the trans before i can get it back to the dealer...NO..Was the answer , you might bind up the cluch ...??

Frank i have contacted a lemon law attorney [schonos@lemonlaw.com] and they will be sending me a packed with forms to fill out.....Win or lose there is no charge .....

There could be one of four scenarios....

1] Full purchase price back...

2] Up grade to a new Trike.....

3] Finally fix it...With money back money back for a Trike with a repair record...

4] Thats to be seen....??

If HD does not have a fix I wonder how these bikes will do in Europe

How can anyone trust going on a long trip having to stop and check your fluid every 100 miles, and what if there is no dealer close are we out of luck, do we add or just wrecker our trikes- bikes home?

I am disgusted by the MOCO attitude and what they do or don't know about this problem

When I purchased the seal, it came with all the O-rings in the kit. I bought 2 sets just incase.

I'm not sure if anyone here has read the article on the HDFORUM or not. But very interesting. It's called "the fix is in" A guy made a shaft nut alteration and installed a seal basically. Long, but worth the read. If Harley doesn't do this, than they don't want to fix it. He sells the mod's for $190.00. Includes the altered nut, the seal, and milled case. You have to send your case back to him. I think he has a good product. Will see if HD ever has a permanente fix or not.

The only thing I see wrong here is now you have altered your bike. If HD does come out with a real fix you may not be covered having altered your bike
