They have been around a long time. You never hear any bad about them when researching sidecars. Tire wear is effected by mounting and how you ride.
The part about tire wear is not true. Mounting a sidecar on a bike will decrease the rear tire lifespan on the bike significantly. I drove from VA Beach VA to Sibley IA to have my Motorvation sidecar installed. The rear tire on my 09 Deluxe was brand new when I started the trip. It was slick by the time I got to Arkansas on the return trip. The reason this occurs is not due to mounting of the sidecar, but due to the fact that rear tire is being rode straight up on the tire with no leaning and such as occurs without the sidecar. I know some folks who have installed car tires on the rear of their bikes to alleviate this problem (car tire treads are flat and bike tire treads are rounded).
By the way, here’s a picture of my old bike with a Motorvation sidecar installed.
