Thread: Swing arm/differential connection for Monarch II on 2005 Goldwing

    Question Swing arm/differential connection for Monarch II on 2005 Goldwing

    Noticed a few days ago when got trike out after long winter that right rear side of trike was lower than left side. Measured difference at upper wheel well and found right side to be lower by ~1.5 inches. Put trike on jack stands and found the right side differential to swing arm connection to have slipped down by 1-2 inches. Left side differential to swing arm connection was where it should be. Both side connections have two bolts and neither side is loose to touch and twist feel. Is there a possibility the differential to swing arm connection could come entirely apart. Don't have a trailer and trying to determine if can ride trike to nearest Lehman dealer (approx 100 mile)?? Has anyone seen this issue before??

    Sounds like you have a solid axle unit, not IRS.

    Also sounds like sometime or place, you hit a hole / bump that was hard enough a hit that that right side slipped, and them bolts being finger tight is far from proper torque needed to prevent slippage.

    You likely can see marks in paint showing where they were initially, if it we mine I'd just put it back in place and secure but I understand wanting dealer to do it.

    I would not take off on a 100 mile trek without laying wrenches to it, even if only to tighten in place.

    The install manual I have (2001-2010 solid axle Monarch II) says those bolts are to be torqued to 85 ft lbs. on page 23, and while no photo shows detail adequately, a drawing a few pages earlie looks like the connection is a box like affair sandwich between two plates?

    Dave, Welcome to Trike talk Forum and sorry to hear of your dilemma.

    One possibility is the bushings between the connections are shot and need replacing.

    They are Polyurethane with an 80 density.
