You really only hear horror stories from those who have had problems. I had a 2017 CVO Limited with the M8 114" motor and put almost 10k on it with absolutely no problems. Now I have a 2018 Tri-Glide with the M8 107" motor. It has a little over 12k on it and absolutely no problems. My riding buddy had a 2017 Road Glide with the M8 motor and now he too has a 2018 Tri-Glide with the M8 motor. No problems at all.
I don't doubt some folks are having problems but I just don't think it is as widespread as we are led to believe.
In any case it's your call and good luck with whatever you decide.
Well, I stopped into the dealer Friday to pick up some parts from my old TG. Jokingly I asked if any used trikes have been traded in lately. All the salespeople know I'm looking for a replacement. One of the gals said "As a matter of fact one was just brought in the day before." It was a 2014 with 785 miles on it. It took me a couple hours to finally decide on it - - - because it was black. If it had been red, I would have bought it in a NY minute.
Supposedly the older owner fell out of love with it - only rode it a little each year until he couldn't handle it any more.
Got the price down to $24692.00 from $27000.00 what they were going to list it for. That's $692 over what I received from State Farm.
Now I have wait a couple months (hope not more) to be able to ride it. In the meantime, I'm having them reinstall all the parts I took off the old bike.
I hope I can live with the color. Any tips or tricks on preventing swirl marks - never had that problem with red?

Just search "how to care for black painted vehicles", you will find plenty to read while you are in recovery mode. You will soon love your trike, it goes with everything.

Put lots of chrome on it. Black and chrome is a good combo - hard to beat. And if it doesn't already have them you can get a painter to add some pin stripes that'll dress it up.
Glad it worked out for you . . . that's a sweet deal for sure.
