EZ Steer

I've had EZ Steer on my trike since purchasing the trike in 2005. I have ridden over 40k miles in the last three years.

I noticed a difference in the feel of the steering. My husband put the trike put on a lift and turned the handlebars to the left and right....and each time the handlebars returned to center with a little "clunk" and a little shudder.

I checked with those who know on line and found that the symptoms mean that I have a bearing problem.

I checked with a Champion installer to determine what bearings are used in the EZ Steer. He had no idea because it comes as a unit from Champion. He checked with Champion - and received the news that Champion would sell the bearings direct to me because it is a low cost item.

In the mean time I checked on line again and received the recommendation to use All Balls brand bearings for the repair.

I ordered the bearings from Honda Direct Line on Monday and received them on Wednesday - how is that for service???

The "fix" will happen Friday.

This "problem" was probably my fault. I didn't check the torque on the bearings. I didn't know that one really needs to check the torque every few thousand miles.

So if you haven't been told that you need to check the torque....you would be well advised to do so.

The bearings aren't expensive, but changing them out will be a major PITA.
 
I may be mistake. ( someone please correct me if so) but on my 2010 champion ez steer they used allballs bearings. But yes you are correct in adding steering head torque check to your semi annual maintenance list.
 
All of the better aftermarket rake kit manufacturers use matched tapered bearings and races that replace the round stock styled bearings.
 
The dealer that's going to put my MT on said I didn't need an ez steer with the air bag system .:Shrug: So what do you all think , yea or na ??:Trike1:
 
Whats the airbag system got to do with curing head shake and hard steering? Sounds like he just doesn't want to tackle it. Id have it installed while he's doing the conversion.

The way I get it people who know nothing about bearings call tapered bearing all balls. :Shrug: I torqued my tapered head bearings to 35 foot pounds and found it to loose (changing lanes before you want to). I torqued my bearing to 45 foot pounds two years ago and no problems since.
