Default Question for those with a Dual Cool Oil Cooler from DK

Traded my 2013 TG in for a 2018 TG. Lots has been said about the new M8 engine so I won't go into the amazing differences in power, other than to say WOW!

I had to leave everything I added to cool down the 13 on the trike, so now I'm starting over. I've added the tank lift and the cooling deflector wings so far. My next step is to add either the LoveJugs or a Dual Cool Oil Cooler. Since I have to do these one at a time for budget reasons, I want to pick the one that's going to get me the best cooling results. I think the oil cooler should be first because there is no oil cooler on the 2018 (how can that be?). If anyone has other thoughts on this, chime in.

My question is this. It says you should get the relocation kit for the oil filter. Do you have to get that? Can the filter be reached and changed leaving it where it is now? I may add the relocation kit at a later date, but would like to not have to do that right away.

    Thanks...

From what I've read, Love Jugs is more effective in keeping the engine, and therefore the oil, cooler than an oil cooler. The theory being that a hot engine will naturally heat the oil. The cooler the engine, the cooler the oil.

I was looking at the DK oil cooler for my 16 and thought I saw a note on their website about the oil filter not being accessable with the oil cooler in its position with the fixed lowers. You might want to check into that.
    It is what it is.

I have read complaints about blowing hot air onto your right leg and into the air cleaner. A few went so far as to say they wish they had not bought it. I wonder if a oil cooler and the DK oil filter relocation kit would be as good or better and not have hot air blown onto the rider?

Thanks for all the thoughts so far.

I had LoveJugs on my 13 TG and never had an issue with hot air blowing onto my right leg though I've heard some people do.

Interesting thought on the cooler engine making the oil cooler with the LoveJugs.

I saw the same statement about the oil filter being difficult to get to with the Dual Cool. Difficult is one thing. Impossible is another and that's why I was asking. I'm hoping that someone that only added the Dual Cool without the relocation kit could give me an answer based on their experience.

    Thanks again!!

If you get the oil cooler you will need the filter relocation kit.

there is no way to get the filter in without it in my opinion.

I would do the Love Jugs Mighty Mites first as they will cool better than the oil cooler to start with.

I put Coolmasters on my 17 only to find that the oil cooler would not fit with them on.

I put just the filter relocation on then.

Then I switched to the Mighty Mites for this year and also put the oil cooler on.

I rode in quite a bit of 95-100 degree stop and go traffic down south this year and did not have any problem with heat on mine or my wife's leg.

    Heat coming up was bearable.

Thanks for the clarification. Guess I'll go with the LoveJugs to start with.

I too have the Mighty Mites/ I run them all the time

I noticed the first time running them my temp on a 17 M8 Freewheeler dropped almost 30 degrees.

To me this is huge here in Florida, also noteworthy I do not feel any extra heat on my left leg from blow thru

Get a hold of Zook here on the forum for more info on the Love Jugs, he also sells them

[ there is no oil cooler on the 2018 (how can that be?). ] Maybe because its liquid cooled?

I think the heads are actually water cooled but the rest of the motor is oil/air cooled. Some have reported adding an oil cooler helps, others suggest the mighty mites or similar works better than a oil cooler.

...Totally agree with Jack! ....I too have the Love Jugs Mighty Mites and have now used them several thousand miles for the first time this summer......absolutely would NOT be without them!.......I run them constantly and have no problem with right leg heat (most of the time you forget their running)..........There have been a couple of times my right leg got some hot wind, so I cut the fans off and found I STILL got the same hot wind on leg = hot wind was caused from crosswind and not the fans! .........but I do recommend you remove gas tank and install fans to frame instead of horn mount = mucho less vibration on fans.

    Cheers!

The oil filter relocation is needed with the Dual Cool oil cooler on bikes with lower fairings.

The reason there is no oil cooler is because the water pump is taking the space where HD normally puts the oil cooler.

Unfortunately, with the Twin-Cooled engines (TC & M8) the oil & the bottom half of the engine actually runs much hotter than the non-Twin-Cooled. So an oil cooler is even more important on them than the air cooled only.

The main source of the heat for the oil comes from the oil being squirted onto the bottom of the pistons. HD does this to cool the pistons...all the heat is transferred to the oil, and then the bottom half of the engine.

With the Twin Cooled, the liquid cooling is just around the exhaust valves, and it does a good job at reducing heat in the heads. So good, that HD was able to bump the compression to get a bit more power. But this just make the pistons hotter, and subsequently the oil, and with no real way for the oil to shed the heat, it becomes problematic.

The heat these make, from the factory, is too much. Bad for making power, bad for engine longevity, and for many it is uncomfortable. See a couple of Reports, HERE and HERE.

I would not run my bikes without BOTH a cooling fan set up and an oil cooler. But if I had to do it in stages, I would do the fans first, and then the oil cooler. Until I had the oil cooler, I would change my oil much more frequently.
