What kind of tach

Hello, I'm looking to put a tach on my trike. Any info on brand or type tach that is waterproof and where to find it please? My mechanic is considered to be the best in this part of the state, but he does mostly 4 wheel bugs and does not have much of a problem with weather. He said I need one that hooks to the negative side of the coil.

I thought about the boat dealers, but my mechanic said a tach for a 4 cylinder would cut down on a lot of adjustments, that's why I haven't looked too much at MC tachs. And all the boats in these parts with car motors are the 8 cylinder go fast type. I figure someone out there has to be running a handlebar mount or something similar. Thanks for your time

Hmmm.

First thought does go marine. But those are panel mounts.

I assume you want some kind of bullet case.

Original motorcycle stuff tends to be multi coil cdi controller stuff that is not directly compatible with old style car stuff.

Where the vw had a single coil that fired for all cylinders and is distributed to the correct one in sequence.

The bike had 4 coils firing independently for it's one cylinder.

So the pulse count is different. You could built a board to adapt some of the stuff, but knowing what the bike part needs might be hard to figure out.

All that said.....I have run automotive non waterproof tachometer outside on the cowl several times. Not a vehicle that was left out in the driveway all the time but did get rain every once in a while and not on purpose.

Thanks folks. I've decided to try a Trail Tech tach. I've been running their speedometer for about 3 yrs. or so . It's done pretty well. The odometer went out of sync about a year in, but the speedometer has stayed accurate. Since I change oil every 3 months any way the odometer is not too important. The tach wraps around the #1 spark plug. My mechanic said he has never heard of doing it that way, but he's willing to work with it and it's only $40, waterproof, small, and a multi mount. It should be here Fri. or Mon. I'll post the + or - after I've had time to run it fot a bit. Thanks for your time
