Just wanted to put this out there: If you're installing an engine guard on a Freewheeler by yourself, it can be pretty hairy trying to line it up and torque it down all at the same time. Advice from the school of hard knocks, busted knuckles, and a lot of cussing: use a bungie cord or tiedown strap up over the top of the machine to hang the guard in about the right place. That'll allow you to line it up and torque it down *without* having to hold it up at the same time... it'll make a HUGE difference, trust me.

Too add something to a almost year old thread, I installed engine guard 49184-09A to my 2019 FLRT and also purchased the steering damper kit and found I did not need the kit.

I just bought the crash bar too and am waiting on that adapter part. Looking at the bike I cant see the need for it. What exactly did it do for it?

Default Instructions for Installation of Engine Guard

    Good Morning,

I have a 2019Freewheeler and I have purchased the engine guard and the damper part. I am trying to find some good instructions which I thought I had seen on the forum. I think I see where the attachment is to the frame but there are covers that seem to be on there pretty tight. So wondering if that is not the correct attachment point. Also I see a piece on the bike already that looks very much like the extra attachment piece I bought

I was hoping to be able to do this myself- any help would be greatly appreciated!

The engine guard will attach to the lower part of your frame, There should be plastic plugs in the frame holes. You will need a pick tool to pop them out. You may want to clean the threaded holes in the frame out before the install. This will maker the bolts go in easier. I hope this helps you and Welcome to Trike Talk

I had to buy bolts from HD because I am not capable of telling what size I need just by looking. Part Number 4924.

The attachment piece is similar, but a little different. You will be able to tell the difference when you get it off. Be careful to put the eye ball looking washer on correctly.

It looks like HD is cutting corners to save dollars not supplying bolts they know will be needed to do the install. What a shame

Jack, as I am in the process of installing my Lindby Magbar, asking for your advice. How does one clean the threads in the frame? Appreciate all information. Thanks, Jim

Run a bottom tap thru the holes, spray clean the threads to remove any debris with brake cleaner

Thank you as always for your sage advise. Fortunately I was able to use Tap Magic oil and a stiff brush that cleaned the threads so that the bolts (H-D 4924) fit fully into the threaded socket. Indeed the plastic caps were a bitch to remove....no doubt the source of the offending material. Stay safe. Ride safe.
