Engine temp measurement

I read in some of the posts where there is a concern about excessive heat in the engine, my 16 TG don't have a Heat guage as part of the original instrumentation, is this normally a aftermarket addition? and if so are the temps to be monitored the oil or the engine top?

any suggestions for what equipment to use for this purpose, This is the most expensive bike I have ever owned so I try to be in the know and prevent any problems before they occur to the best of my ability,

The 16 Rushmore model is not listed in the H D parts catalog, how ever I see no reason you cannot adapt the ones they do list to work on your bike

The sensor gets screwed into the oil pan, or on some models it can be t @ the oil sender

I dunno how accurate they read, I have never trusted any HD gauges over the years

Probably the most informative piece of equipment you can use to get real time info is a Dyno Jet Power Vision. DK Customs is a dealer and they can give you lots of help with them.

With the power vision, you can know what the ECM knows .. pretty impressive tool for keeping and eye on things and diagnosing issues. If your just using it to monitor stuff (not changing the tune), I don't think that HD would see it as a warrantee issue. But then again ... some dealers consider anyone but them washing the bike as a warrantee issue.

I have to agree, the PV is a powerful tool not only can you change the tune, you can fine tune it plus monitor engine heat. It also stores the original tune so you can flash it back if warranty becomes an issue

The PV is a great tool, but the least expensive solution for monitoring heat is a laser thermometer, around $15 or so. I check my engine temps periodically under different conditions just to keep an eye on things with one. I have a PV that I need to mount but have only loaded the tune so far. I would recommend putting a set of Love Jugs on and look into other ways to assist with keeping the heat down. DK Customs has a great write up about heat abatement and the products to assist. I think yours is water cooled which helps the upper run cooler but you don't have an oil cooler so your lower end will run hotter than an air cooled with an oil cooler. DK offers Jag oil coolers that would also help a lot.

One of the best things I did to my 16 was to buy and install a DK Customs filter relocation kit which comes with a 6 row oil cooler they say it lowers oil temp 30* plus makes changing oil and filter a breeze. Also installed one of their Outlaw air breather and as I have done on all my bikes, re-routed the crank case vent to under the bike with one of their DIY kits, comes with everything needed and it sure beats running all over the place looking for what you need. These folks have their stuff together and are very helpful.

The external crank case breather is so much better than routing it back into the engine. You know, I'm all for clean air, but many EPA regulations don't seem to make much sense and greatly effect the performance, cost, cost of maintenance and longevity of many engines. Just look at how lean Harleys are programmed. A recipe for premature failure. I can't imagine the total of all Harley engines, all running at the same time throughout the world making any difference in the quality of air even if they had no emissions equipment. I'm glad they haven't required DEF in my little Kubota yet. Regulators regulate, it's what they do. Normally congress passes about 115 laws a year while new regulations exceed 3,500. Unelected bureaucrats dictating how we live.
