    Default Rekluse clutch aftermath

I had written in an earlier thread about my Rekluse clutch. Here is what happened. I was going to have it installed at an independent shop recommended by the H-D dealer where I bought my TG. It was 140 miles from my house so I decided to get it at the local H-D shop so if there was any repairs needed I would be nearby. I asked them ahead of time if they knew how to install it. They stated that they did, so I proceeded with the purchase. When I went to pick up the trike they didn't give me any instructions about how to shift it or anything. They said "you'll figure it out". I seemed okay for about 350 miles on a couple of trips. I was on a trip to a city about 130 miles from home when it seemed to be slipping. I took it to the H-D dealership there and had it adjusted, it seemed okay after about another fifty miles it started the slipping again. This happened a couple of more times so I am feeling something is really wrong with the installation. Now I'm by the original dealer where I bought the trike and I was told they would not work on anything Non-Harley and recommended I take it to the independent that I was originally told to go to. The dealer called them where upon I was told they could do it but not this day. They were swamped, I said give me the address and I will go beg. Here I am stranded 130 miles from home and it will barely move. I got it there and "begged". Mark said he would take a quick look and see if he could get me going. After about two hours he said it needed to be replaced because it wasn't installed correctly. I had spoken to Rekluse several times prior to this episode, so now I's stuck. Friday afternoon and what do I do. I, called them and spoke to Tony in tech support and asked for Danny who I had been dealing with. Tony told me he would call Danny and get back to me. Finally he called and said they were shipping and new clutch over-night with Saturday delivery. Conclusion, it is in and working like it supposed to. This is huge thank you to Rekluse for their great customer service.

I bought my '12 TG that already had a Rekluse installed, by them in Sturgis. I'm very happy with mine so far. There are times when the clutch will stay engaged when I am downshifting though. Which of course means a heavy dose of braking. But overall I'm pleased with mine.

I've had mine a year. Love it. It wants to "creep" a bit, until the trans. gets warmed up. (And of course I hatge, not being able to Park it "In gear".

That is a problem. I keep a Velcro strap at hand to wrap around the front brake lever; since the parking brake is a joke.

Or you could use a small wheel choke made out mild steel or really just about anything. I use one on my bike when I mount it when it's on my lift. Got some small diameter rope and just pull it out and put it in one of the lowers. Mine came from a large "L" bracket off a roll-up door. Doesn't take much to stop the slight roll. Get a metal 4-plex electrical cover and bend it. Add a rope and bingo, no more creeping. Of course that doesn't keep some jerk from pulling it out but then neither does the velcro. Nothing is perfect.

I have been looking at a Rekluse as well, but abandoned the idea. My local dealer said they have installed 8 and that everyone complains about them because they required "adjustment every 700-800". He said the owners went back to OEM on half the installations because of this constant adjustment issue. In reading this thread, I wonder if the techs are installing all of them wrong. The installation video is pretty clear on details and sequence of installation. But every thing I read on Trike Talk is favorable for the Rekluse setup. So.....

Has anyone else who has owned one had issues with a need for continual adjustment to keep it operating as advertised? Does anyone have any idea how or why this condition could be occurring? If so, what did you do to remedy it?

It is a great question ! But as they had 8 out of 8 of the same problem , I’m wondering if the same tec was the installer on all 8 ? If so , then I would think it’s a install issue.

As far as the parking brake complaints , when I purchased my 12 , as it has the hand lever type , it was a constant adjustment issue with the turn knob. When replacing the rear pads I u-tubed the procedure as to retracting the pistons. Then the park brake also has a adjustment setting on the brake caliper. Since resetting it , 2 yrs ago, I’ve had no need to adjust the top knob , with no issues with the park brake.

If anything , the Recluse would eliminate that dreadful first gear clunk. That noise gives me visions of things just getting jamed together .

Not ever having one, But being around for a few decades...90% of the problems are 50% of the installers fault ......And not explaining [If they even know how it works] to the costumers how the part works.......And what some of the side effects are...

Sorry.... I wasn't clear on the adjustment comment. The adjustments were be made to the clutch release under the derby cover. The complaint was a continual need to adjust the clutch to avoid slips and creeps. Has anyone had that issue?

I have now had my second one that was installed by a Rekluse recommended dealer and have no problems. It works as promised and you can't beat Rekluse warranty. They stand behind their product.

If you eliminate the Harley first gear clunk while still under warrantee, Harley will void the warrantee, Ask any dealer....

As some of you will remember, and there are old threads about it somewhere on here, I was the first one to test a couple of Recluse clutches on my Tri before they became available to the public. They are located a couple of miles from my home. They told me to beat the crap out of it and try and break it, and they would replace anything that broke on my Tri. Then I could keep it for free if I wanted it.

I tried hard to break it for about a 1,000 miles by slamming it in and outta gear and shifting without rolling off the throttle. I couldn't break it. It always worked fine. But I didn't like that my Tri would roll in gear since that crappy emergency brake was the first thing I removed about a month after I got my TG. I decided at the time to stay with a regular but heavy duty clutch that could handle my stage 4 power with no doubts. But I could not say anything bad about the Recluse other than the roll in gear factor. And they are a good bunch of guys that back up their product or refund the price. Interesting to hear that they are still in use and that most guys like 'em.
2011 Cool Blue TriGlide with full stage 4, a lotta other upgrades, and a lotta shiny stuff.

I've considered looking into putting one on my Indian but that clutch tranny is darn nice as is. The clunk doesn't bother me at all but rolling in gear would I think. Especially if I went ahead and put a trike kit on it.

And Trikes will roll, And only on a slight incline... When i had a Spyder i parked it on my driveway in neutral with parking brake on when the park brake let loose and the Spyder rolled off the driveway and a 75 feet down the street till it stoped when it hit a curb...That was back in 08....That was the last time i ever parked any of my Trikes without leaving it in gear...I wouldn't trust a parking brake , Or for that matter a strip of Velcro on the brake lever...

My wife's 012, 016 and 018 Spyders all made noise if you didn't turn the parking brake on. How did it let loose? The only way these trikes can is to turn the key to the "ON" position then release the brake. Must have been a failure in the electronics or the 08's were different.

The 08 were the first Spyder's, And they didn't have those electronics ...

I thought that might be the case. Those first years about killed the Spyder before it got started for many reasons.

What almost killed me, Never-mind the Spyder was the *DPS*....Visualize this...You are going around a sweeping hard turn, And the DPS turns suddenly off' And now you have to use a lot of muscle to keep it turning, Then all of a sudden it turns back on....While you are still muscling it....Got my attention real quick, BRP Had to replace every one of those early DPS's...Somewhere around 8 thousand + of them...
