Hey everyone, first post here and it's a doozy. I just bought a 91 gl1500a with a lehman gtl kit on it. Long story short, the left side axle bearing went out and took the axle shaft out with it. Half the splines are rounded off and just generally in poor shape, so I need to find a new one. I know it's a Ford diff, because it has a Ford logo stamped on it, and that the axle has 28 splines because I counted them (3 times). Do any of you fine folk have any idea where I can get one? Thank you for the help!

Tom, Welcome to Trike Talk Forum from West Virginia, first.:wave4:

As far as I know, Lehman only made that GTL rear axle in a 23 spline or 25 spline.

I don't know the history of your trike and obviously just buying it, you don't know either.

If I had the trike in my shop, I would pull the other axle to verify the spline count.

There are a number of things to check to verify what you have and what you need.

Go to my website www.mjtrikes.com and send me an email with your phone number and I will return the call.

Email me early b/c I'm not missing the Brickyard 400 today.

Just emailed you. Double checked the other axle, they are both definitely 28 spline, with 5 lug bolts.

I viewed the pic over at the other forum and it has the actual pumpkin, I did locate the 28 spline axle and its used on 1979-1993 Ford Mustangs. Is it possible his conversion was made with Mustang parts in 1991?

Ok, so I read about how to add photos, and went through the steps repeatedly trying to get it to work. But nothing happens, no picture shows up. I don't know what's wrong.

Ok, so I've learned it's a Motor Trike and not a Lehman.

So I talked to a Motor Trike dealer that's near(ish) to me and he says it's a stocked part and I'm getting one drop shipped to me. So happy I didn't end up having to get one custom made, I was looking at that and it's not cheap at all! Thank you to everyone here for the help.

Well I thought I would post an update on what's been going on with my trike.

I learned it's a Motor Trike "Classic 1" likely converted around 1996 (+/- 1 year). It has a Ford 8 inch differential with 3.00 gears. The old 3rd member needed rebuilt and I was shocked to find out that everyone near me wanted about $1000 to do it. Luckily I was able to find a place on the internet out of Iowa that sold me a completely rebuilt one for less than $800 shipped to my door.

It originally came with 4 lug axles, and at some point custom 5 lug axles were installed. This meant that I had to order new custom axles for it, which are only sold in sets.

So, now I have a completely rebuilt rear end. New axle seals, axle bearings, axles, and 3rd member. While I was waiting for parts to show up, I replaced the timing belts and fuel filter and replaced the stock fuel line clamps with hose clamps. It had a gas smell coming from fuel filter/petcock area, if it is still there I will replace the fuel lines as well. I'm still in the process of putting everything back together in my very limited spare time, but I hope to have it on the road before next weekend.
