    Default Exhaust question

Most of my expertise is in metric motorcycles so this vw trike will be new for me...

My trike has a 68-69 1500 motor in it. I noticed that there are two exhaust pipes on each side, one on the front of the motor and one on the rear of the motor, for a total of 4 pipes that all run into one muffler...

Would it be feasible to run each pipe into its own muffler (a 12" cherry bomb) so there are 4 separate mufflers?

I ask because on the bikes I build if ya mess with the exhaust you have to rejet the carbs as well...

So... can I do this or should I just forget it?

The original engines are fairly rich to begin with.

You can free up the exhaust some without making it horribly lean.

But if you do much then yes you will need to re-jet.

This is common wrench stuff in the hot rod world.

A 4 into 4, or single straights, is the lowest performance exhaust. Sounds good, performs poor, even more poorly with a single carb instead of individual carbs.

Put an 1-3/8 four into 1 merged header and a good muffler.

A 1500 single port is a good sturdy stock engine. But is not a good one to build a hot rod with. But there is a good chance it has been rebuilt numerous times and now is in a later model block/case. Most are 1600's now as it has been a lot of years since you could get actual 1500 parts.

I run a vw engine that is a little modified......

The stock exhaust have have heat riser pipes that go up the intake then back to the exhaust collector to heat up the fuel.

Aftermarket exhaust are usually not plumbed correctly so they do not heat correctly

If you are running a center carb you need this heat. If you are running dual carbs you don't

I have dual exhaust and mine were not plumbed correctly from the get go. I modified mine some make it better.

The heat riser becomes much more important in colder weather. The entire intake, even to the point of plugging up the inside, can freeze up in even mildly cool weather with the humidity just right.

On a fair weather toy it is more a nuisance.

But if you ride all year it makes all the difference.

How "stock" are you? I betcha you dont have a stock exhaust anyway.

The only thing not modified on Rex Rebba is the VW engine stamp, at least that is what I picked up reading about all your work with her.

I run a stinger exhaust, not my most ideal setup, but I do not play in the cold weather, so all is good for now.

Lot of good help here, hope you get it back on the road again soon so you can start catch bugs with your teeth again.

Actually no part....not a single piece, nut or bolt...... of the entire engine actually ever came from VW. The closest thing to actual vw is the case, it came from what used to be an OEM in Brazil that went private after vw production ended. So it is a mag case from original vw molds made as an aftermarket replacement that CB performance does a lot of machine work to and sells as a "Super Case".

It is easier to list the the vw parts than the everything else.

The sticky at the top of page shows the steps.

You do not have to build an album.

The pic file goes directly into the post. Just like the instructions.

I have android phone and pad. And linux desktop.

    Daughter has windows stuff..

All of them are exactly like the instructions.

I have not tryed apple. The wife has an iPhone. I could log in with hers and check first hand if you see it being different. I would not doubt it it being different as apple likes to simplify and streamline stuff, usually by taking away choices and options. I would think it would be very similar but with less steps and easier to navigate.
