If you gut them ... it would be very loud ... you'd be better off either gutting them and putting in one of the many "inserts" available (check eBay) or going with an engineered slip on.
Gutting the mufflers and not putting an insert in will affect performance by not having the proper back pressure.
Saw off with a carbide cutoff saw just past the cone. Will sound like a megaphone, and very loud. Be prepared for the deceleration backfiring. Not my kind of noise.

I have gutted mufflers on my 17 Freewheeler, it is not too loud and it does not back fire
If you plan on gutting your mufflers be prepared to void your warranty

This is on DK's site under YouTube videos. Bought a used set to try this on. Did not like the sound and went with a set of Street Cannons with Thunder Torque Inserts instead. Louder now, but not obnoxious like it was just gutting the mufflers.
2015 Tri Glide Vivid Black. Customization work in progress to make it mine-when not riding it.
Remove the cat. Makes a little better sound & reduces heat. I got mine from ebay & can't tell it was removed,by looking.
2020 TriGlide Tahitian Teal aka (Hawaiian Hussy). Avon frt & Comfortred rear tires. ProAction frt & rear susp. RZ seat. DK floorboard extension & rear axle retainer kit with EBS, HD pull -back bars. Custom Dynamics front turn signals & Vent grill. All ,HD "Edge Cut " accessories.
Here are two videos (not trikes, but sound will be the same) of M8's on how to gut the mufflers AND end up with more power.
btw, the bike in the second video has been in for warranty work after this was done. The warranty work was done, and the warranty was not voided. That said, the dealership can choose to report it and void the warranty, but a change in exhaust does not show up on the digital tech.

Took my 2017 TriGide Ultra in for some warranty work when I got it back there was a crack in the middle of the windshield under the middle screw, dealer says it was there when I brought it in. That's bullshit!! Now for my question, I just recently had the chance to ride at night and when I went to back out of my parking spot there were no lights on in the handlebar switches it really is a PIA to have to get out a flashlight to find my reverse switch. Do anyone videos on this or can point me in the right direction? I do have my service manual. Thanks in advance
Kben
The stock Harley switches are not lighted.

Yeah, I've had dealerships do damage to my bikes and then claim it was like that when I dropped it off.
I now insist they write up the bike and document any damage when I drop it off...with me standing there. Then if there is anything when I pick it up that is not on the list they made...they did it, no excuses.
Regarding finding reverse button in dark...once you ride it for a while your fingers will know where everything is without even having to think about it, let alone look.

IMO, This is a first step, I also purchase the head pipe off e-bay, (new take off) $40.00. going to de-cat it, than swap mine out so I can swap back if need be. For the cost of the pipe to replace the cat is pretty expensive.
End result, Cooler and A little better tone. But tone and sounding louder is a personal thing.

Removing the cat will help on heat and the stock mufflers will sound better, but if the dealer knows you took out the cat it will void your warranty if you have one, if not go ahead and buy a complete system of your choice. Switching out the head pipe for one that doesn't have a cat would be more work than I would want to do if you had to take it in for warranty work, some do it and some don't, but if you are on the road traveling you are up the creek without a paddle.

I forgot to say some dealers are pretty good about things you do to your bike and will not say anything and still work on it, some not so good, like I said traveling not so good. If the dealer is working on it and a harley rep comes in and sees what has been done, you are out of luck my friend, no more warranty and the dealer is in trouble also from what I have heard.

I don't have a HD, but ain't they fuelies ... and are they not finicky about back pressure changes? A buddy of mine swears they are. The crack is under the middle mounting screw going south to edge? likely just a stress crack. I'd be doubly ticked off if it were me … but it ain't me. On the brighter side, seeing as you own it now, doesn't read as if you'll miss them control lights much.
