That is my thought & I am going to now hold off on replacing/flushing the clutch brake fluid.

I'm checking it in a little while, as I want to get a ride in.

    Thanks
Secondary Clutch Actuator sounds like a fancy name for slave cylinder, and definitely will require bleeding. They will replace the fluid with new I would think.

Yes, they will have to bleed the system

Yes I think so, plus IMO HD wanted to give the heavier baggers and Trikes an easier pull clutch

I checked my brake fluid level prior to my ride today & it was in limits & did not look bad at all, though it was definitely darker that new DOT 4. I turned my pleasure ride/lunch into a ride to my dealer.

I do have some updated info from my chosen dealer, Doc's HD in STL.

As others stated, they said the initial recall replacement parts will start arriving at dealerships 11/5/2018.

They were told they would receive recall repair kits weekly until all are fixed. I am scheduled to get the fix on Wednesday, November 14 in the morning. I told them the only thing that would hamper this if there is ice/freezing rain or snow.

They will flush the system while in there & I am glad, as I don't have to mess with it & getting that cover off. I will do the front & rear brakes later this year & will then be on a schedule to flush all brake fluid lines every even year.

As far as my ride today ( 50 miles), my Freewheeler is still running like a dream & improving with every ride, If that's possible. I am impressed with the M8, as far as torque & smoothness, after the minor adjustments I made, which were a K&N replacement air filter in the stock box & an external breather system of my own design.

    Good info Michael

I am wondering if this new slave cylinder has a smaller piston

If it does the tranny oil will be easier to drop down and flow back to the gears

This could help the oil migration

Michael, did your dealer give you an estimate of time involved to perform recall work?

Talked to my dealer Friday. Asked him about a clutch recall on the 2019 TG. Nothing yet, but since they use the same parts as the last couple years, expect one. His words

Here is what I gleamed from the NHSTA

Year: 2017 Make: Harley-Davidson Model: Freewheeler

    Number of Open Recalls: 1

NHTSA Recall Number: opens new window takes away from VIN lookup section> Not Available Recall Date: October 18, 2018

    Manufacturer Recall Number: 0173

    SUMMARY:

The hydraulic clutch system with secondary clutch actuator part numbers 37200131and 37200131A on the subject motorcycles may exhibit an internal leak of fluid past the secondary clutch actuator piston/seal. If this leak continues for an extended period, the clutch master cylinder reservoir could lose enough fluid toexpose the hydraulic clutch circuit to air, which may result in the inability togenerate enough lift to disengage the clutch. SAFETY RISK:

If this condition remains undetected, it could lead to a loss of control of the vehicle when started in gear, first shifted into gear, or coming to a stop. REMEDY:

Owners of affected motorcycles will be asked to arrange service with an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer, who will confirm that the motorcycle is covered by this recall. If covered, the dealer will install a new secondary actuator piston assembly from the recall kit, P/N 91500093. This service will beprovided at no charge to the customer.

    RECALL STATUS:

    Recall INCOMPLETE

    MANUFACTURER NOTES:

    NA

If the manufacturer has failed or is unable to remedy this safety recall for your vehicle in a timely manner, please contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at: 1-888-327-4236 or TTY: 1-800-424-9153 or file an online complaint with NHTSA.

My 17 is on the list, this will make the 8th issue I have had with this bike.I was thinking of buying a new one in 2020 but HD is going to have to get their act together before I buy another new one.The service guy i spoke to today said he had a question for the HD rep.If the brake fluid is leaking into the trans and the trans is migrating into the primary what is brake fluid doing to the clutches?

You might want to look up your State's Lemon Laws and see if they apply to your current trike? These problems have been all over the place in terms of who gets affected and who doesn't. I sort of took a leap of faith and only having one problem with my 2017 trike which was a front O2 sensor with no migration or other issues, I decided that maybe the MOCO is getting it together and I got a beautiful Scorched Orange/Black Denim 2019. I hope I didn't open a can of worms?

Like Jack said, they estimate 1 hour.

The service manual states you need to loosen the pipes from the cylinder heads to get the cover off, but most say you can just loosen the heat shields. I saw it done on the Fix My Hog website, but it was not on a trike, it was an M8 touring model.

If the cover comes off easy, the rest of the recall is a breeze.

I checked with my dealer last Friday, and was told by the service writers that the part were to be shipped by Harley on the 15 of November, So to check with them around Thanksgiving for repair dates.

Checked the website and mine is on recall. Checked with the dealer and they said parts would be in about Nov. 5. They said they didn't know how many they might get but put me on a list and said they would give me a call.

The hydraulic clutch system with secondary clutch actuator part numbers

37200131 and 37200131A on the subject motorcycles may exhibit an internal

leak of fluid past the secondary clutch actuator piston/seal. If this leak

continues for an extended period, the clutch master cylinder reservoir could

lose enough fluid to expose the hydraulic clutch circuit to air, which may result

in the inability to generate enough lift to disengage the clutch.

    FMVSS 1 :

    NR

    FMVSS 2 :

Description of the Safety Risk :

If this condition remains undetected, it could lead to a loss of control of the

vehicle when started in gear, first shifted into gear, or coming to a stop.

    Description of the Cause :

An internal leak of fluid past the secondary clutch actuator piston/seal.

    Identification of Any Warning

    that can Occur :

In vehicles in which this condition is present, the fluid level in the clutch master

    cylinder may become low.

    Part 573 Safety Recall Report

    18V-734

The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573

    Description of Remedy :

    Description of Remedy Program :

Owners of affected motorcycles will be asked to arrange service with an

authorized Harley-Davidson dealer, who will confirm that the motorcycle

is covered by this recall. If covered, the dealer will install a new secondary

actuator piston assembly from the recall kit, P/N 91500093.

This service will be provided at no charge to the customer. Pursuant to 49

CFR577.11(e), Harley-Davidson requests that it be exempt from providing

a notification of a reimbursement plan. Any pre-notification product

failure would have been replaced under the manufacturer’s limited

warranty. Accordingly, no person would be eligible for reimbursement

    pursuant to 573.13.

    How Remedy Component Differs

    from Recalled Component :

The secondary actuator piston assembly in the recall kit (P/N 91500093)

has a lip seal with a different material. Additionally, the surface finish of

the piston assembly has been changed.

    Identify How/When Recall Condition

    was Corrected in Production :

The updated secondary actuator piston seal assembly was introduced at

the start of model year 2019 production.

    Default Tri Glide recall

I have 2018 Tri Glide clutch is on recall. But also per dealer fluid from transmission leaked over into the primary also with the clutch recall. and a primary leak at the same time. The dealer didn't think it was a big deal about losing fluid from transmission. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Bike has been at the shop for two weeks.
