CB problems

I have a 2017 Goldwing with a Motor Trike Razor conversion. I have transmission and reception problems with the CB. Sometimes it works great, and other times I can't be heard well or receive clearly. It doesn't matter what headset I use. Is it a grounding issue, and if so, how do I fix it?

If it was the ground, the radio would be going On & Off......

Check your Antenna cable connection.

Sounds like a ground issue ... follow the antenna wire back to the radio ... if the connection is intermittently grounded .. your symptoms can occur. Could also be a connection issue from the CB to the audio system.

Which ever it is, since it's intermittent, it should be an easy fix ... but finding it might be a bugger

It does sound like a ground issue but it doesn't have to be the CB. It could be another item like heated grips that might be interrupting the whole bike grounding. The ground is a loop and affects everything in that loop. At least that's been my experience. Hopefully your issue is with the antenna ground though. That would be the simplest. You can pull all your hair out trying to find an interference ground issue. Good luck.

I had similar problems with the CB - a friend asked me how long the battery had been in the bike... he was right - the battery was well aged but the bike still started ok. Put in a new battery and no more CB problems.

Really??? That's a new one on me. I wonder if it was just a loose battery connection so with replacement it was tightened.:Shrug::Shrug:

I guess it could have been....will never know...but the battery was old enough that it needed to be changed.

I have issues with the group I ride with. Several members come in loud and clear. Others are full of static. BUT, some riders whose radios seem full of static to me sound fine to others in the group. What about that one?

Maybe not the case with you,,,,on occasions when riding with a group l get static from the riders directly in front and behind me. I read somewhere that the cb radio waves are unique or different from am or fm radio waves and your position in relation to others talking on your channel or even someone talking on another channel affects the clarity of CB radios. ;):wave4:

If i remember from my CB days in the 70's......If you are too close to each other you''ll get feed back/splash .....[Interference].....

We've noticed that with my J&M on my Indian and my wife on her Spyder with whatever BRP uses. I have no idea what that is. Wish I did so I could see if I could replace it with some other brand that might accidentally be a direct swap. Very doubtful but I'd like to try. We've been fight her CB problem for 18 months now where she'll have crystal clear reception then suddenly nothing but static. We thought it was a ground issue but BRP had the tech do full ohm reading on every ground. Thought they found it with a bad heated grip pin so they replaced it completely. But sadly we still have the issue. And this is all after numerous other changes including now 4 new CBs. It's very frustrating. I've learn more about CBs than I ever wanted to know. I think we are back to needing yet another CB. I bet that one ground problem caused yet another CB to go bad. But we have to play the very slow BRP game and let them tell the dealer to replace it. Everything is under warranty except our frustration. That part is wearing thin. Which is why I'd like to find a better CB for her. There is plenty of room for just about any model but must have a push to talk function that works off the Spyder wiring harness. We do all our testing with a handheld at times just to prove it isn't my J&M causing the problem.

EDIT: Geez, sorry for the book. Didn't realize how much I was rambling about her static problem. Don't want to derail the OP's static problem.

If you just want to talk to each other while your riding, how bout using a pair of Family Handheld Radios, $69.00 for the pair at Wally world. Clip it on your person somewhere and use a Headset with a speaker Mike.

We went through a couple of J&M Bike-to-Bike Cardo systems on some cruisers we had prior to the trikes - it was just the 2 of us riding. We could talk up to a good 3/4 mile on a fair straight-away - was supposed to be a mile distance but you really couldn’t hear/understand very well at that distance. I loved it because it was like speaking on a personal intercom. Didn’t have to worry about what you were saying because only the 2 of you could hear it.

Prior to that we had some cheap CB radios that clipped on to the handlebars - don’t remember the brand but they were worthless.

Years ago we did a lot of group riding and motorcycle camping and EVERYBODY had an OEM CB. We had a blast with it - everybody was tuned in.

Hope you get your issues resolved. Sure can be aggravating when its not right.

If it was just the two of us that would work but we ride with others, Wings and HD's, so need to yell at them as well. So we have to solve this crazy problem. Although we have limped along for 18 months already but it's been sketchy at times. Communicating turns when we get separated in traffic being the biggest problem. Out on the open road not so much.

Greetings:

I've seen this happen before. I would check and CLEAN the antenna connections. Also, there is ground connection in the truck on the left side bracket that mounts the antenna. It is extremely possible that the bracket still has paint on it, between the bracket and chassis. Get some emory cloth and remove the paint from both surfaces. Even if there is no paint, clean it any way. Hope this helps...

Good Luck

Chuck

I agree, seems like you have an Antenna problem. The cable / the Connector / the Ground or the Antenna. Also check for a short in the cable. Most Antenna's are grounded with the mount.

I'm beginning to think the problem isn't my wife's CB but mine. So I'm checking everything that has been suggested on mine now. Just got her's back and they have now replaced everything except the whole radio/entertainment unit. But I have trouble thinking it's my unit because I can switch to channel 19 and get a trucker to come back and they never have an issue. But with very few truckers on CBs now it might be some time before I can raise one. So by that time, if it is mine, it could be back to clear function anyway. Not that many base station folks anymore or I could potentially use one for testing but this is so random that it's totally hit and miss. I agree that it has to be a grounding issue. Won't hurt to make sure mine is okay anyway. Very frustrating!!!
