Default Re gearing a 2016 Harley Trike

I want to make the gearing taller on my 2016 Harley trike. Has anyone done this? My question is if I change the front pulley to a 32, will the rear belt still fit? Too much labor to change the rear pulley as it involves major disassembly of the rear.

Also, has anyone changed the front sprocket to a larger on the primary chain? Thanks for any input.

Not sure if the belt will fit. If it does not you would need a different belt but the rear sprocket would not need to be changed. It is a big job to change the belt.

I changed the trans sprocket on my '07 CVO Ultra to lower the gear ratio. Had to change the belt but the rear sprocket was fine.

I had mine changed 1 tooth to give less RPM . I believe it was an Andrews gear. Dealer advised against 2 tooth change As he did one for another guy & turned out he was unhappy. I followed their advise & am totally pleased. No belt change .

Just checked my invoice. It was an Andrews 31 tooth. Parts & labor was just over 600. Gear was 150, so around 450 labor. I seem to remember at the time Andrews was only one with a 31. Hope this helps. I did this at 2000 miles now over 32000 & love it

Thanks for the information. How much RPM did the trike drop? Mine is 2600 at 60 mph. Was looking to drop it at least 200 RPM to around 2400. I can deal with it being "doggy" of the line. Do yo know if the belt would accommodate a 32 tooth? And, I forgot to include in the post, can the dealer reprogram the computer to make up for the RPM drop and still have an accurate mph reading? I have requested this info from my dealer and am waiting for a reply.

Found this spreadsheet from when I was evaluating a gearing change for my '07 CVO Ultra. I varied the rpm to maintain 60 mph in 6th gear. Going to a 31 tooth sprocket drops the rpm by 3.137% and going to a 32 tooth sprocket drops it by 6.275%.

I know you said you don't mind it being 'doggy' off the line . . . but if you ride two-up and loaded very often I'd have some concerns with that 32 tooth sprocket. In '07 Harley introduced the six speed cruise drive transmission to the touring line (after having previewed it on the '06 Dyna) and it was a dog for sure. I absolutely hated it. When I rode it off the dealer's lot the first time I though I was in 2nd gear that's how bad it was. If I was two-up (which I usually am) and on even a slight incline I'd have to get the RPMs up to a very high level and double clutch that thing to get it going. It was that bad. Changed that bugger from its stock 32 tooth down to a 30 tooth (actually a Tri-Glide sprocket) and it made a world of difference. Like Posse Rider said the Andrews 31 tooth sprocket is probably a better choice and you'll know the belt will fit.

Thanks again. I was told the 32 won't fit unless I change the rear drive belt and that is major surgery to the trike. So, the Andrews 31 is the way to go. Also, can't the front primary sprocket at the compensator be changed and it's less invasive too? Stock is a 34 tooth I am told and I would have to find a 36 tooth which I have my dealer looking for or a 35.

The other choice is to get 16" wheels and high profile tires to lower the RPM. I have to see if that is doable. That way I can swap the rear wheels when going on the interstate for a long trip and put the old ones back on for local. LOL Anyway, I just hated the engine turning 3400 RPM while on the interstate. Guess I am old school....

    Default I went from 32 to a 30

I have run both now 32 sixth gear was useless and 30 seemed pushing the motor at 65-70 range... I purchased Posseriders 30 tooth pulley hoping to get to use sixth gear and can now but... I have to agree with Bill a 31 tooth is great (actually a great improvement) If I ever have old shiney apart again a 31 tooth pulley is going in. I believe I have enough power to make it work on the highway our old 09' doesn't have the higher horsepower of the newer Trikes if you follow what I'm trying to say. From the miles this year out on the long trips at 60-70 MPH a 31 tooth would seem to be a great choice. Andrews pulley's are a little pricey compared to other Manufacturer's but I believe the quality is worth the expense. If you live in a flat plain and never ride the mountains or high elevations a 32 may work. I live in Pennsylvania good luck on your choice of Pulley's it is expensive to switch not like switching mirrors or such just sayin... Travel safe Fred

PS New Castle Harley Davidson switched mine when my Stator and voltage regulator went south. and the had plenty of adjustment going from 32 to 30 so no reason going to go the other way. good luck Fred

Thanks for the info. I was told I can't go to a 32 since my belt isn't long enough. 31 may work. I believe your trike has a longer belt than my 2016.

Just a thought why not try a pair of 205X70-15 if you have a lift kit on your ride going from 65 series to 70 series may give you what you need that is what I'm planning. Fred

    Default Fire size

Change in tire diameter will effect you speedometer reading. Higher ratio equals slower mph read out, may equal speeding citation. Get recalibrated.

I know some of the aftermarket tuning devices do have provisions to recalibrate the speedo. I did it on my '07 using the TTS tuning device. Don't know if any of the Harley tuners do this or not or if the dealer can do it using digital technician. I would think the dealer could.

Any 'free' option is to just use display the speed in either the lower left or right of the gps screen. That's all I use. Never pay attention to the gauge on the dash anymore.

True 09 triglides were 5 MPH slow from factory speedo GPS addition makes an easy check of where you are at when anything is changed no problem for me Power vision tuner makes it easy. travel safe Fred

Thanks for the reply. They are the same part # and specs. The only problem is that I will have a 32 tooth up front and a 70 rear and the 09 came with a 32 front and 68 tooth rear. The Harley tech said the extra 2 on the back won't allow the belt to fit. I'll probably just get taller tires and another set of wheels for long trips. Easy to swap the rear wheels.

I know. Another had the idea of using the gps and have the speed display. Thanks for your info.
