Default Cost Of First 1,000 Mile Service M8

I know....I know....this has been asked a hundred times, heck, I probably posted it a couple years ago when I bought my 16.

I still haven't made it back to our winter "home" in SW Florida yet and just went over 1,000 miles on my 2019. So far I have checked Penscola FL Harley and they wanted just over $550 for the 1,000 miles service using all Syn-3. I'm going to check Mobile AL Harley since we are in this general area for another couple weeks. Then I'll price it with Six Bends in Ft. Myers and Black Widow in Port Charlotte.

I was thinking between $350 and $400. What say ye?

$350-450 is about right without Syn3 ... that will add a bit.

Should note ... never done it on a M8

Joe, how bout you do the fluids keep a good record

Call a dealer and ask them how much now that you have done all the fluids

This will NOT void your warranty

I don't know if the 114 M8 is the same as my 107, but at my 1,000 mile service, it was a quart low on engine oil.

My selling dealer in CA said they were all doing it in his experience, but that was July, 2017.

1st. service at 2 local dealers here in STL are around $500. I don't remember your details on your purchase, but I take it the dealership were you purchases it is out of the question?

Cost me $95 in parts. The new operating manual for the 2019 specifies Formula Plus for the transmission and also the primary chain case. I put Syn3 only in the crankcase at the 1k service. Remember to keep all parts receipts, check off the checklist in the ownwer's operating handbook and sign and print your name with date and you are fully covered, warranty wise.

Other than the 3 fluid changes, what else do they do for $550 (do they even change trans and primary)?? Any adjustments (clutch, belt, brakes, anti freeze etc.)??

One of the local dealers was running a sale, so I had a 10,000 mile service with Syn 3 for $249.00

I'll be waiting for the next sale.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

It is pure dealer profit enhancement for sure. Total BS imo. If the lubricants can't last 1,000 miles they aren't worth a darn to begin with. And if that new bike can't go 1,000 miles without major service then it's in the same boat. Now back in the 'old days' when manufacturing tolerances were not as good maybe, just maybe I could see it. But today, no way. On several CVOs I've had I never bothered with the 1k service and went straight to the 5k with no problem or questions . . . ever. On my TG I did do the 1k on the motor oil only because I wanted to go with full synthetic motor oil. If you're at all concerned do the fluid changes yourself and document it with receipts and you'll have proof and no problem.

Thanks Bob, I hate to admit it but I still haven't sat down and read the manual. Looks like I had better especially since they are calling for something other than Syn-3 in the other two holes.

I hear ya Jack. On my 16 I had Black Widow do the 1,000 miles service mainly because my selling dealer (Six Bends) wanted over $500.00. Black Widow did it for $238.00 using Syn-3. I was thrilled. Then I did all the other fluid changes until I hit the 20,000 miles service just before trading. Had than done in Bloomington IL while on the road.

This time around I can't have my selling dealer even give me an estimate for this first one because I bought it while traveling. I may do the fluids on this 19 the first time though and then see what they will charge for all the other checklist adjustments if I don't start seeing better prices.

The main reasons for that 1,000 mile service are to replace the fluids in all 3 holes after your initial break-in period. Unless you have a CVO, they fill it with HD 360 conventional oil initially.

2nd big reason is to look for any obvious leaks/problems. This includes checking the main fasteners for correct torque. I mentioned earlier that my 2017 M8 was about 28 ounces low on engine oil at the 1st. service. Since then, it has not used any oil.

I have done all routine maintenance myself, and with the help of a service manual, it's not that difficult.

Keep your receipts for oil & filters purchased & you have your documentation in order.

I've always wondered about doing your own oil changes and keeping the receipt - but - I buy my oil by the case so it may be a few months or a year before I do a certain change. Will that work being that I bought the oil months earlier or does the receipt have to have the date of the change?

Gary I have done the same thing, bought oil on sale to get ahead

As long as keep your receipts and record the date and miles of your service you will be OK

I'm in the same situation. After I got my trike home last July, my son sent me 3 cases of Lucas Oil (he knows a guy).

I have the shipping invoice with the date, proving I got the oil.

I have a simple Excel spreadsheet & every time I do something to the trike, I make a simple dated entry. It really helps keep the service organized.

I made an Excel spreadsheet checklist detailing what should be checked / changed on each service. I used the owner's manual and service manual as a guide. I check off each item then date and sign the sheet and file it away with any pertinent receipts.

I honestly don't think you'll ever be challenged about this. Some of you may have read other posts about how 'fortunate' I have been with CVO 110 motors. I've had four of them self destruct and no one ever said one word about services being performed. A friend of mine who was a regional service rep for one of the big three said when they called him to inspect / approve major motor repairs it was self evident from looking at the torn down engine if it had been maintained. If oil is black and thick as tar that's a pretty good indication of neglect. If the oil looks like it should that too is a sign . . . of proper maintenance.

Service came up just once - when I traded my '17 CVO Limited with just shy of 10k on it. Dealer wanted to reduce my trade in value by cost of the 10k service. I told him I had done it a couple weeks prior (which I had) and he said OK, no problem and made note of it.

Both the dealer I bought the '14 TG from and the one where I traded it in on the '17 TG said the same (BS) thing... the 1K service includes the torque check on every (critical) fastener on the bike. Took it in the end for the first one for $550 as I didn't know any better, and for the second ('17 with the M8), just bought the prepaid 20K maintenance plan... they change all 3 holes with synthetic every 5K, and I got free flash updates every time, as well as a new air filter and plugs every 10K. Complete deal only cost me about 3x what the first dealer wanted for the 1K, and I didn't have to crawl arouround under the bike every 5K (I enjoy it, but gettin too old for that crap)

We have been at our SW Florida spot for almost a week and I finally got around to making some calls about getting the first service done.

To my amazement, Six Bends (Ft Myers) is doing them on new TGs for $360.00. Guess I'll go there. After that I'll go back to doing them myself, at least until the 20,000 probably.
