Much better than an 1 1/2" hole!

FuzzyWuzHe - upper left area by the hinge where the speaker/cubby hole meets the trunk side. Remove the screw and you can gently pry the trunk side outwards so cable can slide to the area you notched.

I haven't looked in the trunk since the last help ... been snowing ... again ... but I do not remember any aluminum like in the pic ... Might be helpful to post a pic that shows where this notch goes ... I'm jazzed about not making a huge hole ... especially since I have no holes in the trunk now ... even in the cd cubby (no cb radio) .. thanks in advance ... if it ever stops snowing, I'll get started on this, but, looking more and more like it will have to wait for the knee replacement to be over ... got a new to me toy ... can't even get off my street ... LOL

Thats not aluminium, i have a silver bike and thats the wall /top lip of the trunk.

Open the trunk, and look at the TOP/ back left corner of the bottom trunk, and you will see a screw in to a tab of what ever color your bike is

I believe that is the color of the trunk - silver. Oops, already got it.

So, before I notch the trunk ... there is enough cord to reach up and then down in the trunk? I'm guessing yes since at least two of you have already done this.

I have been fighting flu/allergies and desperately trying to get well so I can get this dang knee replaced. surgery is scheduled for 1/29, so I should bet fine.

Having said that .. my weather has been cold and damp, so I haven't done anything to the bike yet .. only rode it like 10-15 miles. January is usually our bad weather month, so, assuming the knee goes well, I'll be able to start on installing the stuff I took of Helga mid to late February. Some of it like the trailer hitch and the belly pan that require getting on the floor, might just have to wait until March or so. Stuff I can do "sitting" or in my creeping mechanics stool, will be done first.

Thanks for ordering and posting on this Fuzzy, I think this is just what I've been looking for. I think the sound of my satellite radio should improve using the CD connection and being able to bluetooth to my phone will be a huge plus.

The J&M bluetoothed fine with my Samsung Galaxy 8. And the Galaxy 8 BT'd okay with the Garmin 51LMT. However, the Garmin won't BT with the J&M. (will recognize it, but says it is not compatible?)

Don't know if getting a BT dongle could help on connecting - I have one, unfortunately it's up North. (Very common occurence for snowbirds.)

I plan on getting a SENA BT headset, hopefully it will pull everything together.

    Gotta love electronics!

Okay .. now I know I can use the aux input cable, but, I'd love to be able to connect my phone via blue tooth and listen to audio books. I have a "Big" iPhone and it won't fit in the left side pocket with a charger. This thing says it will do just that. We'll see.

Another big bennie is that you can control the output via the handlebar controls that are built in to control the CD player. Personally, if this thing works as advertised, it will be brilliant and remove the reason for me wanting to get into a "newer" model Gold Wing. I like the 01-09 models because I literally know how to tear them down to their bones ... yea I know ... I can learn on a newer model, but, I'm an old dog and the new models are Mega $$$. Plus, I kind of like Helga.

I'll be doing a review when it gets here ... it has shipped and I'm so excited .... LOL.

    Here's what it "looks" like:

    Attachment 64433

    Attachment 64434

As you can see, this gadget plugs into the harness under the seat and then you use sticky velcro (included) to mount it in the trunk ... you cab also plug a memory stick kind of thing into it and also load the gadget up with your music and just play it from the handlebar controls through the radio. Finally a use for the CD button on the radio. Next maybe they will come out with a cover for the button that says something clever like "gadget" ... but that would simply be too much to ask for.

I will be writing a review with pictures and the like as soon as it gets here. The gadget lists for $179.99 plus shipping, but, after I ordered it (like 8 hours later), I got an email that said it had shipped and my card was charged like $152 and change. I'm guessing I got some kind of "Black Friday"/"Cyber Monday"/"Holiday" Promotion I didn't know about.

I cut and pasted this blurb from the J&M site ... so you can read what they say about it ... I'm gonna be the guinea pig on this so I'll let ya know if it's up to it's hype.

This exciting new digital music player from J&M will plug directly into the CD selected music input plug on all 2001-2010 Honda Gold Wing audio systems, replacing the Honda CD changer, at a fraction of the cost.

Store and play up to 550 MP3 song tracks (MP3, WMA or WAV) from your music library on a single USB Thumb drive, and toggle thru song after song using your existing handlebar audio system controls.

Plug in your remote mounted Satellite radio receiver or MP3 player, using the 3.5mm 3-conductor plug accessory cable and enjoy high-quality stereo music thru the Honda audio system CD selection.

Link by Bluetooth® your smartphone or Garmin® Zumo to the player and your smartphone stereo media or navigation commands will stream & automatically prioritize OVER whichever music files are being played from the USB Thumb drive at the time.

Control head mounts inside the tail trunk, in place of the CD changer, with direct under-seat plug-n-play harness for connection to the GL-1800 audio system.

This is a complete plug-n-play installation with pre-gummed Velcro mounting strips and installation/operation instructions.

Note: When installing this unit on 2009-2010 GL-1800s, if you wish to use the XM satellite radio feature of your audio system, with this digital music changer, you will need to purchase at additional cost J&M part# JMDM-ADT-GL18.

    Supported Bluetooth Profiles:

    A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile)

AVRCP ( Audio Video Remote Control Profile)

So, since you've had this installed for awhile now, how do you like it? Are you able to connect to your phone via Bluetooth to listen to music without issues? Planning on getting one but want to make sure it's as good as it sounds!

I use this to get my SiriusXM radio output into the bike's audio system. With the wired headset (my choice) or over the speakers it works flawlessly. I also use it to connect via bluetooth to my iPhone Xs Max so I can listen to audio books on a trip. In this mode, it works flawlessly also. No alternator noise, no issues at all.

I haven't tested the hard drive feature, not something I will use. I have an iPhone SE that I will sometimes use on a trip, I have plugged that into the unit via a usb cord and it works really well, Alas, my old eyes don't like the little screen anymore. But, for the uses I need, Best money I ever spent.

Yea, I'll be following this, I'm a fan of getting some audio book CDs at the library and putting them on my MP3.

I played with the audio book to mp3 thing ... LOL ... I'm not very high tech ... my first trip after doing that, I was listening to a David Baldacci book and by my first fuel stop, I was totally lost. So I started another one. Next stop, same result, total confusion. Finally figured out that the chapters were named by cd#, then track# so they were not playing in order. What I was getting was all the track 1's, then the track 2's, etc. Very concussing. I played with changing the file numbers, but on big books you can get a lot of files. You then need to number them 0001, 0002, etc. What a pain. I also was having an issue figuring out how to make and transfer a playlist from and to an Apple device. So, I just joined Audible (hate giving amazon my $$$, but the service is perfect for my needs). During winter months I build a library, and listen to them during the riding season. The big plus is if I start to listen to a book on a trip, I can finish it on any of my devices. They all sync to the same spot. I can even download a book in a different format and put it on my water proof iPod and listen while I swim .. way kewl, swimming a mile is BORING and my mind tends to dwell on the swim and it makes the 40 minutes seem like days ... LOL.

The good news, the BT CD thingie works great with audible when connected via input wire or over BT. Most BT devices seem to loose volume and with my hearing loss, it's an issue. This gadget doesn't have that issue.

I'm fairly hard to please and this thing has won me over. Might not be good for everyone, depending on your needs, but, I really like it.

When ripping CD's from the library try putting them in different folders CD1, CD2, CD3 etc. What worked for me on my much earlier version of the player. NOTE: Mine does not have BT. Best of luck

I gave up on figuring the stuff out ... LOL ... that's what Audible does best, and the books are actually cheaper for monthly fee (one book a month) than buying the cd's ... and I know I could probably get them from the library and rip them for free, but, that is illegal and I'm the guy that would get caught. Same reason I don't speed, not out of some sanctimonious belief that I'm better than that, just I'm the one that WILL get caught.

I'll give you an example. I was on a ride with the HOG group here in Junction, actually going from Grand Junction to Craig over Douglas Pass (kind of a long way). Pretty ride, but I digress. After Douglas Pass, about twenty-thirty miles there is a stop sign and we needed to go right. I was bike 18 out of 35, yep, dead center in the group. The first 17 bikes did an abbreviated California stop at the stop sign, more like a wave as they went by. Number 18, me, slowed and went through, you got it, as I roll through the stop sign, I see the Colorado State Patrol sitting in the parking lot at the reservoir at the other side of the intersection. He hits his lights, we all pull over and yes, it's me he wants. The rest move on and the officer gives me a written warning. He tells me that he's doing this so that I will tell the group that he could have given all 35 tickets for running the stop sign and he wants me to explain that, so they will be more careful. I do that during the lunch break in Craig to a loud chorus of laughter at my expense. If you've ridden with the Harley guys you will understand that.

Another example, I took my mother to Salt Lake to fly to New York. Yep, you can get there from Grand Junction, but, it's almost faster to drive to Denver or Salt Lake (about 4.5 hours each way to either) and you'l save several hundred dollars unless you can book like weeks in advance. Anyway, driving my mothers brand new (still temp plates) Toyota Avalon, nice car but if you don't watch it, you will be flying, lots of power. Good news, it had cruise control and I had it set at 75, right on the limit. In Crescent Junction, Ut. (wide spot on I70) I get pulled over by an Utah State Patrol who had his hand on his holstered pistol. I of course asked why I was pulled over and was told that he'd ask the questions. He takes my paperwork and goes to his cruiser. About 10 minutes go by and he returns and we play twenty questions with him asking all the question and me saying "Yes Sir, No Sir". He finally asked if I had proof I took my mother to Salt Lake to fly out, and I said, "Do you have proof I didn't?" Big mistake, he's not happy, I'm not happy, he starts trying to intimidate me and I say, "Not saying anything else until I see a lawyer". A bluff, cause I hate lawyers like doctors. About this time, his partner who had remained in the cruiser on the radio, flashes the lights and he goes back to the cruiser. He comes back, hands me my paperwork and says I'm free to go. Not knowing when I'm ahead I insist he tell me what it was all about. Turns out, I matched the description of a suspect that's been seen driving in a white car similar to my mom's on I70. What are the odds of two ugly fat white guys being on I70 in a white Toyota Avalon. Anyway, they had determined the suspects car was a Nissan.

So, as you can see, I don't need to go looking for trouble, it pretty much knows where I am at all times (Apologies to Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon).

There are lots of examples, but don't need to bore anyone with them ... LOL ... although the arrest for "Flouting the Law" is a Hoot.

Because of the constant presence of trouble in my general area, I try not to encourage it to rear it's ugly head.

Thanks, sounds like it will work for me then.

Sooo.. you don’t think that this kind of attitude for 65 years had anything to do with the current injury to your “bird” finger being over-used?

Maybe ... but it would be for sticking it in my mouth trying to keep it shut ...

I also picked up a shorter double male 1/8" stereo connector so my SiriusXM Radio could plug into the CD BT Thingie ... I got a 15" and it is still way too long ... I'm thinking like 6". I also had issues getting the double sticky tape to stick because of the cold. I used a hair dryer and kept it warm for about 90 seconds or so and everything stuck just fine.

Here's what it looks like in the trunk. Notice the SiriusXM is in the trunk too so even though it's not waterproof, it's not in the weather at all. I have a remote for the radio, but, I always listen to "The Message" so it's not a biggie. This is a dockable radio that also works in my truck and house. So, only one subscription for all my radios.

Here's what happens when you connect it to the CD BT thingie ... you can see it "thinks" there is a CD installed.

    Attachment 64827

Okay ... pictures out of the way .. here's what I tested and found out today.

!) When the CD Thingie is connected to the SiriusXm radio, it is crystal clear and very good volume, the same volume as just the radio. Absolutely no static or alternator/ignition noise in the radio. To get to listen to the SiriusXM radio, just select CD, everything else happens automatically. Pretty Kewl.

    2) With it connected to the SiriusXM radio, and you want to listen to the Audible app on your phone, it connects after being paired, quickly and seamlessly. When you start the audio book ... it over rides the SiriusXM Radio. So Kewl. You do loose a tad of the volume like you will with every BT Connection, but still loads of volume where you can hear it at 75 mph on the highway with no helmet. Testing the helmet audio, there is lots of volume there too.

    3) So even though I never use the phone on the bike, I had my mother call me after I got the helmet on and out to the highway. Told her call me 10 minutes after I left ... the phone rang, I answered it and could hear and talk just fine ... again ... way kewl.

    4) Last thing I needed to test was with my little phone, iPhone SE, connected via the aux cable running from the left pocket with the phone charging from the aux 12v connection, the audio is really crisp and no ignition noise even while charging ... Alan is a happy man.

All in all, this is the best $152 and change I've ever spent on a Gold Wing (I've spent more that I care to say). If you have an older wing and want to connect anything to the bikes audio system ... this thing is the way to go. I would feel the same even if it didn't have BT ... but that's a plus.

If you have any questions ... just ask ... this thing is way kewl. Now if J&M would make a button cover for the radio that said BT instead of CD ... it would be perfect.
Installed mine today and everything works great and I think I'm going to really like it. I just have one problem. I wanted to check out making or taking a call so I pulled over and called my house, my wife answered the phone and I could hear her but she couldn't hear me. So she called me back and the same thing, I could hear her but she still couldn't hear me. I made sure all my settings on my phone were turned on correctly to allow me to talk but still didn't work. I do have mic mutes installed but I can't see that that would make a difference. Any ideas?

I'm guessing the mic mutes are the issue ... I did nothing but plug it in and it worked fine .. Sorry I can't help ... maybe call J&M Tech support ...
