Default Side note on clutch recall

Was at the Harley shop today for the annual Xmas party and was talking to the service manager about all this mess.He said they have over 200 bikes they have to repair and they are on average getting 4 replacement parts a week.So the wait could be a while for myself and others, then he started talking about being at a Screaming Eagle seminar last week and asked one of the HD guys about oil transfer, this guy looks at him and says ,what oil transfer issue. So he pressed him a little more then the HD guy said until we have a cure we wont claim there is an issue.

He looks at the HD rep and said, there already is a cure,Hoag Choppers fixed it by installing a larger clutch rod(still not convinced this will fix it),the HD rep says that the Motor company is not going to go to an outside source for a issue they are not convinced exists..Typical HD lol.

And that was about the same response that i got from them when i talked directly to Harley about my oil transfer problem...And thats also why i'll never own a Harley again..

    Steve that is pure BS

Harley cannot skirt this problem, they already admitted it with their very own bulletin

They also have tried several fixes with epic failures

This is laughable and may lead to a bigger loss of market share

Jack i agree I think Harley is hoping that we will just trade up hoping to get a bike that doesn't transfer oil.Myself i intend to be a pain in their hind parts, going to get the extended warranty and see what happens. He did tell me that before he left that his local rep came out and asked for the name of the chopper shop that claims they have fixed the issue, said she wrote it down.

I guess there are good dealers and bad dealers, along with bad and good H D Reps

That said they ALL know this oil migration stared before the M8 engines

Very poor customer support here by the MOCO

Those who are mis in forming ( lying to customers) should be ashamed

Look at the date of this bulletin, All dealers and reps have access to this

There is NO getting around this for HD, they have found a way to keep this off the internet, tho it has been saved by many

I would confront any one from HD that plays dumb on this

They( obviously to me) want this problem to go away on its own

Consider ALL the owners that DO NOT know they are having this problem

I shudder when I think of how sneaky the MOCO is, never saw this before JMO

My friend, who owns a 2017 Triglide called last night. In addition to problems with the transfer issue, plus another tranny relacement, plus suspension issues, problems with getting parts that break, now the clutch on his bike, he said a guy he knows was "encouraged" to by a new 2019 and now has the same transfer issue with his new bike. Very discouraged. My friend has purchased an extended warranty plus another special package that supposedly puts him first in line for repairs and free oil changes and a free tire during the life of the package. The problem is so many owners bought them that they all expect to be first in line. In addition, he was told, as many here have stated, that the clutch recall will be months to fix since the dealer is only getting a few parts every month. My friend has spent several thousand on these extra " protection plans" and spends more time with the bike in the shop then he does on the road some months.

I don't understand this. Over a 20 yr period I owned 7 Ultra models and except for an issue with the tranny on one bike, never had issues like this. I don't understand why HD can't produce a bike that doesn't keep having issue after issue year after year. I never purchased an extended warranty on any of my Ultras, but everyone I talk with these days feel they have to buy one or get stuck with an expensive repair, which they usually use at some point. Do you think HD is simply resting on their loyal customer base and figure that no matter how many problems their customers have with their products, the customers will just stay with them?

This oil transfer thing is an interesting mystery to me. On my 2016 103ci, 2017 107ci and now my 2019 114ci, I have not experienced this problem. I ONLY use HD Formula+ in the tranny and the primary chaincase. It might be superstition but the viscosity and molecular structure of Formula+ may be such that sumping does not become an issue?

In my 2019 114ci TGU manual, it calls for Formula+ in the two holes rather than the Syn3 called for in the crankcase. At this point, for whatever reason, I am glad that I have never experienced the problem in any of my trikes.

Just a point of clarification. The TA0022 that Jack posted is dated 2017-09-27 and pertains to 2014 through 2018 (and from what I hear now I guess 2019 also) models. So the oil transfer/migration from the tranny to the primary is not an 'M8 thing' but it seems it is a 'Rushmore' thing. I think it was 2014 when all the touring models went to the hydraulic clutch but have to wonder if something in the hydro clutch system also changed at that time. I had several CVO Ultras model years '06, '07, '11 and '12. They all had hydro clutches and I never heard of oil transfer/migration and as far as I know never experienced it with any of those bikes.

When the dealer changed mine out to monitor the level they put all HD oils in the trans and primary, still did it.

Bob, it is a toss of the coin it looks like

I have been lucky, my 15 Freewheeler never did it nor my current 17 Freewheeler

I run Redline gear lube, with Formula + in the primary

I ran the 15 (103)to MN and back twice with no fluid loss

I ran the 17 ( M8) to D K customs to be dynoed, and to NC twice with NO fluid loss

Jack I don’t think any of the freewheelers have the problems it seems to be with the T/G’s and some Two wheelers! that have it! If I’m worng feel free to correct me 👍📞

You may be right on this Bob

I too have NOT read any Freewheelers reporting this problem yet

The bulletin states ANY hydraulic clutch model as far back as 2014 has potential to migrate fluid, this would cover Rushmore models also, the late Twin Cam engines

Also another note all these same engines have the potential to oil sump

The bulletin states ANY hydraulic clutch model as far back as 2014 has potential to migrate fluid, this would cover Rushmore models also, the late Twin Cam engines

Also another note all these same engines have the potential to oil sump
Mine did twice.......The first time i just though it was wet wires, I was riding in the rain, Stopped at a light...And when i took off in first it felt sluggish, Then when i hit second it was like i was dragging a tractor pull sled.....
