What are your winter plans for the trike?
I want to refit it to me. Have to move the clutch and brake pedals forward a lot. Would like to add a foot throttle. The throttle is like a light switch, on or off! I was told the trike has a 1600cc engine that has been bored out to a 1776 plus it has a radical cam in it. At about 40mph in high gear it takes off like a surface to air missile. First time it did it, I was thinking it was going to be a clean up for the old Maytag! Possible repaint and who knows what else after I get into it.Originally Posted by David357

What carbs and cam?
A big cam and a single carb do not get along very well. It would be real lopey and mushy weak until the cam timing comes in.......by then you would be out of carb to do anything with it.
If you know or can figure out what is actually in the engine.....I believe we can help you get the drivability up and more predictable.
That's what it has, a single, single barrel carb and most likely a big cam. It sounds somewhat like a loping v8 at idle, runs smooth, but when it hits around 40, oh my!
Do you know what it has for heads? Stock?
It sounds like you have a miss match of performance parts.
This is exactly what we are going to find out! I need to change out the clutch too. It's a race clutch and it's either on or off. I will let everyone know what I find out as I go along. Are there any markings on the cam which would be visible when pulling the cover off. I was told it might have a big cam in it. The guy that I bought it from said he had hotted the valves. I've never heard that term before but I have a feeling that means big.
Problem with VW engine is that you have to completely tear down the engine, split the cases to access the cam. You might be able to pull the oil pump and see if there are any markings visible through the hole on the end of the cam. I'd recommend taking time to read over the VW trike threads especially Snu's Tech, tech, tech thread. There are several books and small specialty tools that you will need to work on the engine that are mentioned in these post. Post pictures as you disassemble and somebody should be able to help.
