    Default Better Performance?

Has anyone been successful or tried to obtain more hp and tq from their Stallion?

I spoke with a Dyno shop last year about trying to get more HP and gas mileage. He did hooked it up to a computer and said he could get a little more mileage out of it and some more HP and torque. All the charts and graphs he was looking at were Greek to me. He sold the shop last month, but still comes in to work on Fords. I'm going to see him again on Monday. Stand by. Rick

That would be good, hope it work out .Thanks for your effort.

I went over to the Ford Ranger forum and found a lot of info on how to increase hp on the 2.3 eng.

Unless it rains, I have an appointment on Jan 26. I'm curious to see how close it is to the 155hp claim. Rick

Heck, even I'm curious about the outcome of this!

Previously attempts at doing this haven't been successful and I can't recall who it was, but one of the Stallion owners went as far as sending their pcm to Rousch to do some tuning & was told they no longer had the programming information for the Stallion and couldn't help them.

Granted technology has come a ways since then and the ability to "piggyback" & break into pcm's to "recode" has become more accessible than it was in previous years.

Be sure and share the results with us!

Back when I purchased my Stallion, I was told that they had Roush reprogramed the ecm for at least the 2009 year. Tomg

I just got back and here is the lowdown. The timing was set like a pick-up for hauling a load. It was set at 8 degrees. He reset it up to a max of 22 degrees at my request. He said it could have gone higher, but at 26 degrees and max RPM, it started to ping just a little bit, so I decided to go more conservative. It was also running very lean at low and midrange RPM so he adjusted that.

Here are my observations on a short 80 mile ride afterword. It has more throttle response from a stop and rolling in the 40-60 mph area. I did this adjustment because it kept dropping gears going up little inclines and hills. I checked all these readings at 70 mph and on cruise control so I could get a steady reading. Before, on a 2-3 degree incline, it would drop out of overdrive to keep up at 70 mph. Now it doesn't do that. It just stays in overdrive. Before on a 5-6 degree climb, it would not only drop out of overdrive, it would also drop a gear and the rpm would go up to 3700-3900 rpm's to hold 70 mph. Now it will drop out of overdrive, but won't drop and gear and the rpm will be at 2950.

I will know more about gas mileage next week when I go on our usual Saturday 15-200 mile breakfast ride. He said it should remain the same or get a little better.

    So far, I'm happy.

For those of you that can read this thing, here is the chart. He couldn't get a torque reading because his machine couldn't get a good rpm reading. As you can see, there is about a 30% increase in HP in the midrange. The old tune was very up and down in this area because of the way the timing was set and the lean fuel mixture. It is much smoother now. This is at the rear wheels. Add about 20% to get the HP at the crank.

Wow, that was a good hp increase, I'm thinking the tq was pretty good as well according to your description of the power feel uphill and how it reacts. Also by using premium unleaded will be a plus in making more power if you had regular gas. I will definitely do this as well. Thanks. The average charge now for dyno tuning in my area is about $700.00

$475.00 here and $100.00 of that went to the program license, so the shop got $375.00. That tune was running on 87 octane gas.

Numbers and price sound good! If I weren't going to buy a new trike, I would invest in the dyno tune. The next owner might be interested though . Don't forget to post your mileage. Now I get 30-32 mpg here in Florida but, when I'm on out of state trips it always jumps up from 3-8 more mpg as those states don't have as many additives in their fuel blends! I actually got 44 mpg in Arkansas with no ethanol regular gas! Tomg

I was getting 30mpg on the breakfast rides on Saturday morning up and down to 6500 feet and back. I never got over 35mpg with it on trips, but I was usually traveling 75-80mph and going up and down hills in Arizona, Utah and Colorado.

Here's a picture of it strapped down on the Dyno.

    Good morning

results show what a good tune can achieve. I am curious tho on how the timing was changed, I thought it was only accessable through ecm. so you can access ecm and change other parameters also. I was under the impression you could not reset any parameters with the roush chip

Yes you can. He was able to access the computer and when he found out he could do that, he had to buy a license to be able to get the program to change it. The license was $99.00 and that was included in the $475.00 for reprogramming the ECM. He was able to change anything he wanted at that time. If I feel something isn't the way I want it, he said he could meet me anywhere with his laptop and he could adjust the ECM. Rick

Thanks, did he have to access the ecm through a special cable, take off the front cover and then plug in? this sounds very interesting, can a dumb nerd like me get a license and learn the process

He plugged into the OBD II port under the hood. I have no idea how he gained access and where he got the program. Rick

I heard something about the chip being installed, is this a piggy-back chip plugged into the ECM?

No chip or external programmer was needed to be installed. Did it with just a computer plugged in to the OBD II port.

Sorry, but I meant someone said there were Stallions with the Roush chip plugged into the OBD II port when they bought them.

When I purchased my Stallion, we were told that Roush had tuned the ecm, nothing about any chip, just refining the installed ecm. Tomg

    Good morning

Rick can you ask your friend about license, from what Richard said rouch does not have the stallion information any longer so who did he get his from. basically sounds like the ecu was flashed. interested in your mileage, has it improved.

    Thank You

    Dragon
