Default Would like some help re: Nova Scotia & Newfoundland trip

Around the first of each year Mary and I sit down and talk about what big trip we're going to do in the coming year.

This year we're planning on doing several "shorter" "big" trips, instead of one 40-50 day trip.

For one of them we're thinking we're going to have 8-9 days in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

    We've never been to either.

The only things we know we want to do is the ferry ride (Mary likes them) from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland, and see some icebergs, maybe up around Twillingate?

Anyone who's been, we'd love to hear what roads & sights are "must-do's" in the area.

    Thanks!

    Kevin,

About 3 years ago MJ and I rode from Key Largo to New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. So much to see 8 to 9 days will not be enough.

On New Brunswick Hopewell Rock was very interesting. It is known for showing the massive difference in the tide as it changes up there. Very remarkable. Also on Nova Scotia the Cabot Trail Rd is very nice.

We rode the shore line around both Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. Very Very nice.

You will love Canada the people are super nice. I was stationed on a NORAD joint Canadian/US base for 4 years and got to know them very well.

    Can not help with Newfoundland.

Be prepared for rough roads in some of the states up that way even some main roads. The weather really takes a toll on them.

    Thanks man!

We'll have 8-9 days, beginning at the Maine/Canada border until we need to return to that same border.

Thank you for the suggestions. Hopewell Rock is in Hopewell Cape?...looks like it. Wow, just was looking, it is -5 degrees there right now!

We've spent some time in BC and the Yukon and found the folks in Canada to be very welcoming and friendly.

    Default Nova Scotia

I had the opportunity to drive my parents (in their motorhome) to N.S. a number of years ago. A few tips....

    1. Ride the outer road counter-clockwise! You'll have great views not blocked by traffic, and you will be closer to the water.

    2. In the early afternoon, ride down off the main road into the little fishing villages. Then look for a shanty on the dock with smoke rising from a small stack. That means they have a pot of water going waiting for the fishing boat to come in and unload.

We purchased (and ate on the dock) fresh lobster 10 minutes after unloading. Can't get any fresher than that

    3. Make sure you have warm clothes. Friend of mine rode out there last summer and he said it was very chilly.

    4. If you're interested, a stop at Peggy's Cove in Halifax may be something you both would enjoy. It gets really crowded there from mid morning to late afternoon.

    5. You may want to consider a ferry ride out or back. We drove out then took the ferry back.

Enjoy your trip. You will see some of the best scenery Canada has to offer!

Man, thank you for the tips! Appreciate it!

We really like BC and have been wanting to get to the eastern side of Canada for a few years. Looks like this is going to be the year!

Also Prince Edward Island is mostly dairy farming. I was surprised about that.

    OHHH! How's the smell?

Dairy farms in our parts are less than pleasant.

My father imigrated (legally) from Newfoundland. His father was a 1st mate on a fishing boat/ship. Unfortunately, the fishing has been shut down in lots of places (Cod, heard that on a discovery channel show) in an effort to revive the industry after over fishing by foreign entities. Lots of the smaller fishing towns have had the people relocated at government expense to save money on infrastructure. Sad state. My father's people where from Twillingate (sp?) and that has much to off tourism wise.

It's beautiful country, but yea ... don't forget your electrics/woolies ... sea breeze can be down right nippy.

Wow! Interesting for sure, makes sense why your dad liked it up in the colder parts of Colorado now!

Yep, we'll try and go during the warmer time of year, but always will have the electrics with us.

On the north shore, check out Digby, NS. Great town. World famous scallops. Boats coming in/out. Also near there, try a whale watching boat off their Long Island (not mine, but almost as nice). Clockwise is the way to go around NS. Oh, and have your rain gear handy.

    Default Nova Scotia & Newfoundland

My great grandmother, Ella Lou Fontenot, 1860-1902 was born in Bayou Ridge (later changed to Evergreen, LA.). I have been unable to locate either father or mother for Ella.

This is what took my wife and I to Nova Scotia a couple of years ago, to try to find the family name and possibly a connection. There were rumors that my mother’s side of the family was Acadian but I have no documentation to support that. We did not locate anything which only means we will be going back.

That brings us to the trip, 31 days on the road Triking from the DFW, TX area. We left the DFW area, by-passing all interstates and worked our way to Maggie Valley, NC to the Wheels of Time motorcycle museum. From Maggie Valley on east to Nags Head NC and Kill Devil Hills. From their up the eastern sea board taking the ferry to Cape Mae. From there into Philadelphia and the constitution trail. On to Reading, Allentown, Poughkeepsie, Green Mountain National Forest then over to Portland and back to the seaboard, bypassing New York, Providence and Boston. Into Canada and to Saint John’s on the bay of Fundy.

    https://wheelsthroughtime.com/museum...xoCiPgQAvD_BwE

We dallied a bit at Alma to watch the incredible tides on the bay of Fundy. This is the location of some of the most extreme tides in the world.

    http://bayoffundytourism.com/worlds-...nce-the-tides/

From there on to Sydney, NS. We had no plans at this moment to visit Newfoundland but that would soon change. We were determined to see Cabot’s Trail, one of the most iconic, bucket list roads in the Western Hemisphere, it certainly lived up to the hype. Unfortunately for us, the trail was foggy for our entire visit, it was still worth the trip. While there, we discovered the town of Baddeck, a wonderful village, on the Trail and the retirement home of Alexander Graham Bell. The town of Baddeck, a seafaring village, was and still is Gaelic. Bell’s ancestry was Gaelic and he was fluent in the language. This is the reason he came to the area. There is a museum in Baddeck dedicated to Bell.

    http://visitbaddeck.com/

While in Baddeck, we were talking to some local’s (I must say, the roads are for the most part very good and the people were more than wonderful every place we went) and they asked us if we were going to go to Newfoundland. A discussion ensued and buy the time we left, we were mapping out the way to Newfoundland.

    https://www.planetware.com/tourist-a...dn-nf-nfsj.htm

From North Sydney, by ferry it is 8 hours to Channel-Port aux Basques and 16 hours to Argentia which is close to the Capitol of St. John’s. *** Caution some ferry’s do not run daily *** You really want to visit St. John’s. We elected to take the ferry to Basques, arriving just before dark. We had not thought this through and found ourselves with no place to stay and it was getting dark. Note: accommodation can be difficult to find on a moment’s notice, it is best to have the next evenings lodging set the day before. We were in luck and tool the last room at a little town of Tompkins. From there we took the Trans-Canadian Hwy to St. John’s with many stops along the way. It took 2 ½ days to get to St.

John’s. One of the first things you notice is that St. John’s has more pubs than any place you have been in the western hemisphere.

From St. John’s, back to Sydney NS for the night then the coast roads through Louisbourg (a fortress town), Halifax and on in to the Arcadian areas south of Halifax, down to Shag Harbour and on around to the west side of the island, inquiring along the way to the family name.

We took the ferry to PEI, a little disappointed, nice country side but nothing really outstanding.

From there we headed to Quebec City. Soon discovering that this is a destination all by itself. The castle fortress is incredible and the shops are to die for. The town rivals San Francisco when it come so hillside buildings.

    https://www.quebecregion.com/en/

Heavy storms were coming off the west coast so we decided to head straight back to Texas from Quebec City and got as far as Tennessee before the weather caught us. We were stuck for a 1 ½ days then made it home.

Some notes: No firearms, Passports required, minor indiscretions can cause a problem at the border, I have never had a problem in western Canada but twice in eastern Canada I was bounced about pretty good for some miss deeds that happen when I was a teen some 50 years ago, never denied entry but made a bit unpleasant. You will learn to love Tim Horton’s very quickly. Sort of like our Starbucks but on steroids. As one Canadian explained to us, it is their addiction and I believe it. Free Wi-Fi that always works, clean bathrooms, great coffee + soups and sandwiches that are just incredible. I actually saw 2 Tim Horton’s on the same block; they are everywhere in Eastern Canada.

A lot of rambling, hope some of this helps, all the previous suggestion are good as well.

Thank you! Yep, always have the rain gear.

Previous advice was ride it counter-clockwise to be nearest waterfront. Your advice of going clockwise now has me confused. ??? Could you share the reason?

While in Baddeck, we were talking to some local’s (I must say, the roads are for the most part very good and the people were more than wonderful every place we went) and they asked us if we were going to go to Newfoundland. A discussion ensued and buy the time we left, we were mapping out the way to Newfoundland.

Kevin we were in Nova Scotia several years ago and are going back this July ourselves. I have not been to Newfoundland and would like to go. Only drawback is the VERY long ferry ride - 7 hours to the Southwest part and 16 hours to the Southeast part. https://www.marineatlantic.ca/en/pla...ailing-Routes/

And J. Carolyn is not fond of ferry rides, lol. But with that said I did get her to agree to take the ferry from Portland, ME, to Yarmouth, NS, and it is a 5 hour sail. Then the ferry from Cape Breton Island to Prince Edward Island is a bit over an hour.

In any case I'll PM you some information I've developed for our upcoming trip and from our previous trip. I can include GPS routes if you'd like. And we can meet and go over all this in person which might be helpful to you and Mary.

BTW you've already gotten some very excellent suggestions most of which I'm aware from my previous trip. And yes, do ride the Cabot Trail counterclockwise in order to stay near the water. And since you are fond of unpaved roads at the northeast end of the trail before it turns west you can go to Meat Cove. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meat_Cove

    https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attracti...va_Scotia.html

We rode to Meat Cove on our previous trip. You'll love it!

    Regards,

    Jerry

The ride to Basques is not too bad in the chairs, take something to read, game to play or something to distract you for a few hours and your there. The only rub is the ferry leaves the dock mid day and it is getting dark by the time you make port. You really need to have you lodging set for the night, other wise it is a scramble. If you head to St. Johns (highly recommended) it is a 16 hour ferry ride back. You really want to book a cabin, worth every penny. Caution, that ferry does not run daily, be sure to check the schedule. The ferry pulls out early evening, after a little time in the lounge and a decent meal, head to the room for adult beverages or what ever and snooze the night away.

Planning the days business on the roof top deck at our hotel in Sydney NS. Note the white buildings across the water and to my right; that is the ferry terminal in North Sydney (not Sydney), they are not the same and a lot of people get bit by that. Yep it is right there, just across the water, from the hotel, it is a 45 minute bike ride to the ferry terminal at N. Sydney from the hotel in Sydney.

The Ferry to Basques; strongly recommend you bring your own soft ties and straps, does not take much room and sure does make things so much easier.

We did not need the straps, the crossing was so smooth but you never know.

Going back to Sydney, it has been a tough day, we left St. Johns early and hit some back roads (dirt and gravel on a few) to see some out of the way places. She was a real trouper......a little worse for wear but all will be well. This photo is mid ship, this is not a small ferry by any means.

Our cabin, coffee pot, fridge, private shower and all the hot water you want, queen bed was really comfortable, sat. TV. Close the curtains and you might as well be at the Hilton (the rooms were not quite that big but they were great) You might want to pack snacks if you indulge, there is limited selection on the ferry and everything is a bit pricey. We had great plans of heading out on the deck after sunset to watch the moon, take a deck chair while sipping on adult beverages, great plans.....what really happened is we took hot showers, went to dinner, went back to the room and that was that. So very done, the bed was comfy, I think I was gone by 9PM.......big adventurer I am! HA!

I meant CCW (Counter Clockwise). Too much laughing gas and digital watches.

Oh, and just to defend PEI, there is great kayaking there. Very quaint driving around. Only been there in car while on business. Eventually I will ride back to area.

We took our grandson 10 and granddaughter 7 from Michigan to Maine, than to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Didn't have a trike than, but the g kids had their Sea Kayaks. We went to Hopewell Rocks Park in New Brunwick, where we paddled thru sea caves, than walked thru the same caves 2 hours later. They have 50 foot tides there so the rivers reverse direction twice a day. Cape Breton Islands Cabot Trail is a good ride. We saw several whales from the road. No gas on the north end of the island, but a beautiful ride. Much better than the mainland. We also saw a native Celtic Ceremony.

Sounds like y'all had a great time, it is very pretty and there is so much to do. We can't go back this year but it is up for consideration next year.
