    Default Started Fixing Jessica

Okay ... so finally a day with no extra dogs and temps in the low 40's.

I tried to decide what I want to tackle first.

Decided on the not so good LCD Screen for the Navi.

Here is what it looked like when I bought Jessica:

I talked to Honda about replacing it. $1700 for the screen and $300 labor. Okay ... so I'm doing the labor.

Found this on flea bay for $100 and $10 shipping.

Yea ... it's from China so I was hesitant, but for $110, I figured what the heck, give it a try.

I read up in the shop manual and it didn't look like a rough job ... LOL ... Man was I surprised ... Now I know why its $300 labor. The windshield, Dash, Gage panel, gage cluster and a few other things need to come off. I might of got away without the windshield and dash, but, my chubby little hands and my less that perfect eyesight made it hard to figure out how to get the plugs from the gage cluster out.

Here's the gage cluster out laying on the ignition.

Here's the spot the gage cluster goes in, you can see the three plugs you need to remove. If Honda gave you an inch or two more wire, this would be so much easier.

Here's the front with the dash removed and most of the nose off.

Here's a better look at the Gage cluster.

    More in next post.

I didn't have time to install it ... so more later.

I did however, set it in place hook up the plugs and test it ...

    Default After thought

I'm gonna clean up lots of the dirt oil there ... and before I put the dash back on ... I'm gonna put the handlebar risers on ... less junk in the way ...

Yeah removing that gauge cluster is fun isn't it...its next to impossible to get your hands in far enough to unplug the wiring harness plugs and of course Honda has a multitude of different plug snap lock configurations, so you have to figure out how each one comes apart. Putting them back together is even more fun. Looks like the Chinese LCD worked out good for you. What do the two LCDs look like close up side by side Fuzzy? Wonder if its made by the same manufacturer or a knockoff?

The eBay add said something about it fitting the Goldwing (07-13) I think ... took a chance that the 06 was the same part number. According to BabbitsOnline, they use the same part number.

It also somewhere said it fit some BMW cars ... it was a gamble that it would work ... but it paid off. As far as who made it ????? Came in a brown box, with bubble wrap and that shines stuff to protect electronics.

I think AllWay is a Chinese version of eBay, so it may be like overstock ... Don't know.

Took me 35 minutes to get the gage cluster loose ... another hour and a half to get to the plugs. About an hour to swap out the LCD (forgot to take the protective film off ... so had to take it back out). I'm guessing 2.0-3.5 hours to get it back together. Gonna put my vented windshield on and the Handlebar risers while I got it apart.

What I meant was, did you notice see any markings on the two that would indicate who the manufacturer was, or a part number or a made in China/Japan, etc. There are almost always manufacturers markings on parts to identify them.

Zook is right, many manufactures use the exact same LCD, takin a little time investigating can save you a lot of money. As an example Dell, IBM, and Lenovo laptops use the same LCD manufacture.

    Default Markings

There where no markings on the back of the new one (That I remember, but, I didn't remember these either) ... but there where some on the old one.

Apparently this was made by Sharp. Hope this is what your looking for ... cause I'm not taking it back out ... LOL. I did see this on the box ... originally thought it was a shipping label, but, that's on the other side.

Here's a link to the original ad ...

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Honda-G...72.m2749.l2649

You get a discount if you buy in bulk ... thought about getting two ... ya know a spare ... but ... that would of doubled my gamble. Also thought about ordering a spare now ... but ... if this one goes out, I'll have Honda do it ... LOL ... this is a time consuming job ... and not a lot of fun ... LOL.

So after fiddling with the windshield adjustment shuttle (see need some help thread) I got her all back together.

    Name: Front Done.jpg
Views: 222

    Name: Dash Done.jpg
Views: 215
Size: 356.6 KB

While I was putting it back together I remember there a a couple help items I could bring to this thread.

When you remove the nose piece, there is a screw on each side that you need to remove to take it all the way off. These are behind the mirrors on each side. If you move the mirrors down and forward, you can get to them, but, it's tight. My help to you here is to put a rag under the screw and push it down into the void before you remove the screws. First time I did this I spent time going to the Hardware store to get new screws. They fell into the void and I never saw them again, didn't hurt anything, but, frustrating none the less.

    Name: Rag Trick.jpg
Views: 224
Size: 968.5 KB

The other help item has to do with the dash/speaker enclosure and putting it back on. After you get all the little clips in their slots and the posts in the grommets, before you put the two screws into the ignition to secure it, check the two clips, one on each side below the windshield adjuster lockdowns, these are notorious for not fully engaging.

    Name: Gap.jpg
Views: 218
Size: 882.5 KB

You can see the gap and the clip not engaged. What I do is get a flat jewelers file and gently pus the clip inwards while gently pushing the dash down until it engages. With the clip engaged on both sides, it eliminates the "squeaks" you sometimes get from the dash.

So on to the next project ... but that might wait until the knee rehab is done.

Well ... couldn't just let her rest ... I have a box of accessories I took off Helga that are dying to be put on Jessica.

But, I do have some "issues" that needed to be addressed before I got serious on accessories.

The LCD was the biggest of course so that is done. The next issue was almost every switch, push button, slider on her stuck or didn't turn smoothly.

So today, I took the Handlebar controls apart and cleaned all the switches with contact cleaner and then lightly sprayed them with spray dielectric grease. Wow ... they are all nice and smooth and work as they should.

Next, I took apart the left and right lower controls (headlight adjuster/suspension switch and Navi and Set Controls). Cleaned them with contact cleaner and lightly sprayed them with the same spray dialectic grease. They all work perfectly now. (Should of installed the power pork while I had the pocket out ... My Bad)

While I had the dash/speaker cover off I did the heated seat and grips sliders, as well as, the trip/display switches ... forgot to put that into my prior report.

Thinking I had the switch situation taken care of, I installed my Butler Drink holder on the right Hand control. I also installed the Chrome (Metal) Brake and Clutch reservoir covers and the Chrome (Metal) bar end weights.

Feeling good about the days progress, I decided to do a ride ... maybe 8 miles or so ... still in the 30's here. I stopped at a machine shop in town and I'm having them make adapters to allow me to replace the OEM radio and cb antennas with Firesticks. (Jessica doesn't have a cb, but I did purchase a cb antenna, I like the look of two antennas and may add the cb at some point). I did this on my Illusion Red 01. I put black Firesticks on her but, I painted the wires running up them with a close red paint. Really looked kewl. I plan on using 4' black Firesticks and painting the wires with silver. I will post pics when I get it all done. I may and some 6" springs incase I bump the Firestics. The pic below is what I ordered, but, haven't arrived yet. This is gonna be a post surgery project. Painting the wires will give me a "project" while I rehab. Takes a few hours on each stick to get the wires right.

When I got back, I was putting her in the garage, removing my gloves and the Russian hat and noticed the passenger seat heater switch ... missed one. It operates really rough, so it will need to be taken apart and cleaned/greased. Maybe tomorrow ... LOL.

I'll get pics next post for the neigh sayers ...

I am pretty sure the second knee replacement is gonna retire me (doc says I will destroy the new knees if I kneel on them .. pool work has lots of kneeling) ... what else do I have to do?

I need to feel like I can hop on my bike, head to Texas, Florida or anywhere else I feel like going at a drop of a hat. I do 90% of my own maintenance, so once I get her where I want her, I can get on her and ride. If I need to do an oil change .. I have the tools onboard to do it. the 12k and 24k service requirements could be done on the road .. but ... if I come due .. I know since the bike is current, they could slide a tad .. ... just til I get back.

I plan this summer to get a pet palace and take my little buddy Harley with me. I think on a longer trip, say over 200 miles, he and I will be more comfy that we are with this:

Fuzzy, my burner fixin required constant kneeling, dad got me a 2’x 3’ x 2”” pad to kneel on. Thank the lord as it probably was one of the few things I listened to him to use. I am 70 and the knees are a ok. My back and hips , not so.

Btw, take good care of your buddy 🐶. He’s a sweetheart.
