Had my left knee replaced in 2014 and my right knee in 2015. All is good. I think the key to a good outcome is the physical therapy. Hang in there. It gets better with time.

My right was in Nov 17, Left 8 days ago ... 11 knee surgeries in all ... not my first rodeo ... had 2 Achilles tendon tears, rotator cuff, elbow surgery, couple of hernias, two nose surgeries, deviated septum not cosmetic, some others ... I think I'm up to 23 or so. Never fun, but they have always been successful ... so I guess I can't complain.

My left knee was replaced in 2007, at age 56. I was walking two hours after I awoke. I did so well that the nurses actually applauded me! LOL! Rehab was uneventful, except for my PT being a busty blonde fox. The right knee? Well, that’s a different story. That was in 2010. New tech used a couple of pins, rather than a spike in the femur. So, less invasive, right? Got up to walk and I was in agony! They ended up using a suspended harness to dangle me while I “walked” down the hall. Felt like a marionette! Anyhoo, I worked on ROM, and got to 100 degrees, then for some reason couldn’t go past 85. Doc had to threaten me with manipulation to scare me into working through it. Today, I am able to do squats, reverse lunges, and jumping jacks pain free. Why am I doing these types of exercises, you may ask? Because I suffered a near fatal Widow-maker heart attack, in 2014, but that’s another story.

Had my second therapy today ... drove my truck there (shhhhh ... don't tell the doc) ... just couldn't handle another ride with mom ... last time she was doing 35 in a 55 on a four lane texting ... I grabbed her phone and made her pay attention. She's 85, very active and very independent. Guess it's true, God loves an idiot. blows me away that she does this, and gets away with it.

Any who ... after 35 minutes of torture (therapy), my therapist tells me we are gonna evaluate you for the week. Okay, the results ... 95* bending and 0* straightened ... up from just two days ago.

He told me if I was not in crowds, I could get by with just my cane that clamps to my forearm. In crowds he recommends the walker ... if for no other reason, the people will know I have a stability issue.

So all good news. Monday, the staples come out, mine are SS and there is a special tool that clamps on to them, ends them open and out (went and asked my surgical nurse). Of course, sometimes they stick to the skin and have to be wiggled. That does sting a bit, but I only have 36 of them ... not looking forward to any of that ... might be a percocet when I get home after that.

I hate talking those ... not saying I won't ... cause I hate pain almost as much. I think I've taken like 8 pills total since the surgery. Two the day after surgery, when the nerve block wore off ... WOW ... that was an eye opener. on the right knee ... I had very little pain for like 36 hours but lots of swelling and bruising. The left one, fairly substantial pain after 12 hours but almost no swelling and no bruising. I needed the pain pill the day after my first out patient PT. Couple of more last weekend after I did my therapies.

Right Knee one week after surgery.

This morning might be another pain pill day. LOL. My therapist this time is cagey. He tells me the basic exercise i need to do, then lets me do it at "my level". I think he's figured out that I'm excited about riding soon and will push myself. Yesterday he put me on the stepper and just told me to "warm up". 10 minutes and almost 1200 steps later ... I told him I was warm ... ... I like the stepper ... non weight bearing and both knees feel great after using it. But, it maybe what I pay for the next day. I have a recumbent stationary bike I bought for mom to rehab her knee (she cracked her knee cap about 10 years ago) ... she's never used it ... might adjust it to fit me and see if it is as good for loosening the knee as their stepper thing. The thing they have you sit in a chair like thing, back 100-110* to legs and you pump almost straight out. It's not the circular pumping of a bike, more like the straight out and in of a stepper, except there is no weight on your knees, which in my case is a really good thing ... LOL.

Know what my wife's doc told her about total knee replacement surgery when she went in last Jan? Had to keep her in hospital for a couple days since she is on Medicare. Said if she were a bit younger they could do the surgery as outpatient! Yikes what's next - outpatient brain surgery. That was just a bit too extreme for both of us to wrap our heads around.

If I remember right, there was a guy who's wife had brain cancer, since the didn't have health insurance, nobody would do the surgery ... the guy studied up for like a year, did surgery on his wife ... saved her life ... and was promptly arrested for practicing medicine. Now there is some good old fashion irony.

Some Medicare plans won’t pay for out patient surgery, so the docs will admit you in order to get paid.

    Default De Staple Day

    Got the staples removed today.

Doc comes in and I'm sitting at 98*. He says, "Look at you showing off".

I said I'm just sitting and pulled it in to 103* and pushed it out tp 0*. He was impressed.

Next comes the nurse. He's an older army medic. About half the staples were "stuck". Nine or so he had to dig out from the skin. Since I'm allergic to steri strips, he coated the incision in Dura Bond (Super glue). Supposed to wear off in about a week ... I hope

Whole thing took about 45 minutes. Pretty sore when I left.

Here's the result, the stuff that looks like it's running down the leg is the dura bond, the yellowish stuff is beta dyne.

This is the tool he used to remove the staples, he let me keep it, said it works great as a wire tie cutter ... LOL.

Therapy again today ... but only once this week .. second Thursday of the month the therapists have a "Meeting". Just happens to interfere with my days ... Lucky me ... ... but I do go to March 12th now.

Update: I'm at 100*/0* on my own, 107*/0* with help. My therapist said he has a "special treat" for me next week. My first reaction was to "Be afraid, be very afraid", my second reaction was to "run away". I finally realized ... it all counts towards 10 sessions ...

The more PT the better make them kick you out. You will better for it later on. At the time of my accident therapy wasn’t pushed by a lot of doctors. No pain no gain!

Alan, Iv'e got good knees so far, but they started hurting after reading your thread. Anyhow, we are glad to hear you are doing well, and good luck to you.

The one outstanding result, even after 11 years, is that my knees are the first thing I am aware of when I wake up. No pain, just an awareness of a foreign body.

Interesting, did this feeling start right away? I'm 15 months into my first one and never had that feeling. I do notice if I sit for awhile, I'm a tad stiff when I get up, but, two steps and I'm fine.

It pretty much transitioned from pain to this current sensation. Oh, well. At least I can sleep through the night.
