    Default dual webras ICT

Good morning to all. I've been running a cheap-ass carb for a couple years and ready for an up-grade. I'm looking at the dual ICT webras and would like to hear from someone that's using them now or have used them in the past. I will be buying from Aircooled.net and have them re-jet and adjust. My 1600 is stock, I think, lol. Thanks

I do not have any direct experience with them. I have seen them and have been around the talk about them (and other dual singles).

Vw factory even used some dual singles.

I am not a big fan of them. I think they may be ok-ish on stock to extremely mild cams. Many claim they like to idle on 2 cylinders. Which is believable considering the firing order and any extra valve timing overlap.

I would not say that they are a poor choice.....but I have always skipped right over them.

Personally I would go for dual 2 barrels, something along the lines of 40 IDF's.

Thanks for the info Rex. I understand how singles wouldn't be your choice, but I'm mostly looking for a quality dual set-up and still have a lil money, hahaa. Those IDFs are pricey. But really, 55 mph is as fast as I want to go with this rig anyway. It's long with a lil flex here and there, not good with these rough Louisiana roads, lol. We mostly take it to benefits, poker runs, etc. I was hoping the Webras would hold their settings, run better, be dependable. They have to be better than what I have now.

    Thanks again

    Ok.

    Some things to know then.

    Weber is an Italian company.

Most of the carbs we use on our vw's have been out of production for years and years.

So technically......there is no "real" weber carbs anymore.

The carbs sold with the weber name on them are licensed by weber. As in they have official use of the design and name from weber.

So that leads up to today......

There are "real" Italian webers that have not been made in forever.

    Then Spanish webers.

    Brazilian webers.

    American webers.

And probably a few others also.

If you can find an old used set of real Italian webers then buy them and rebuild as needed.

If not.....then the next best thing is Spanish webers.

The other webers are on par with the Chinese copies.

So now the Chinese copies then.....

Empi carbs, a Chinese copy of a weber. They have come a long ways and are not that terrible anymore. But the lack of consistency with machining and quality control leads to the errors getting out the door.

Then the Chinese copy of the Chinese copy of the weber.....FAJ's. They are very cheap and even less quality.....you might get a good one or not....it is a gamble.

Then the Chinese copy of a Chinese copy of a Chinese copy of a Weber........Decade.....Same as FAJ.. ...cheap hit and miss quality.

Most of what you see on ebay is FAJ's or Decade's unless it specifically says Empi hpmx....and some are just false advertising making you think they are webers or empi.

The only significant problem I have had with empi or any of the Chinese copies is the alloy of the metal. The throttle shaft bore wears quick and the metal is more susceptible to corrosion. The alcohol in the gas absorbs water when it sits a while and this moister is very hard on the aluminum alloy. Real webers and real German solex dont seem to have this problem......at least not as quickly.....they would have to sit full of water for years.

Like the replies Rex, I just know a few carb names for autos that does spill over a little to this area.

I used to be able to clean them and re kit them and make all work. Even learned how to tune by ear, of course the older one gets the tunning is not as good, LOL.

I run a set of dual carbs on my 1600, I think they are doing well and in sync, but it would be so much easier to tune on large two barrel carb, at least for me. I just keep reading what I can and hope to increase my education.

Thank you, please ride safe everyone

Ok,,, ordered the ICTs,,,,,,I know I know, lol. But I've got other "toys" and they'll want new expensive parts too if I buy those IDFs. They do claim to made in Spain so hopefully they'll be good. Also ordered some push rod tubes, got one with a dent, starting to leak a lil oil.

Weather been real nice lately, ready to get the trike cleaned up and worry free.

Hi Wayne, I was wondering if you ever got the Weber ICTs on and how they worked out for you. I was thinking about going the same route. I guess the two barrels would be better if you plan on up grading your engine later but I'm leaving mine stock 1600.

    Thanks

Hey Carl, yes, very happy with them. Trike is more responsive, starts quick. They were an improvement for sure for my set-up. Paid extra to have them set-up and was well worth it. If I remember right, I only had to sync them to each other using the vacuum tool.

One thing I found out with the Weber ICT (and clones IIRC) is that the idle fuel comes out on the rear* side of the carb, and feeds the 2 and 4 cylinders nicely while the 1 and 3 dont fire right. My bus would idle on two every time. The idle fuel never got over to the front cylinders.

I solved this with a balance tube. There was a flat area below the cab on the intake manifold that I drilled and put a threaded/barb fitting. 3/8 NPT x 3/8 barb. Then, using a couple pieces of 3/8 fuel line, I connected a 3/8 piece of stainless tubing between them. Curved it to match the engine gasket.

Adding this pipe allowed some transfer of the intake pulses at idle, and effectively 'blew' the idle fuel into the center, and fed the front cylinders.

With the tube, silky smooth idle. Without, idled on two. Did this on several cars that came in the shop with great results.

A note on the single 2bbl holley/weber progressive- the manifold makes ALL the difference for them. The manifolds that have two tubes in the center section ALWAYS had an low rpm acceleration stumble that the accelerator pump adjustment would not cure. Why? Because the secondary blade opens up a bit when accelerating away, and the secondary side did not get the 'squirt' of gas from the accelerator pump. This would have a slug of lean air entering the engine as the secondary tube started to flow. The common plenum manifolds, with 'a big hole' beneath the carb, did not suffer from this. They (common plenum) were the ONLY ones I would install. Not sure how common they are now, my shop was active 1994-2004, so its been a while...

Above information is for type 1 motors, I did find the 2BBL holley/weber also had the same distribution problem on a type 4 with the center mounted carb. HORRIBLE mileage, and a stutter on takeoff. The best/cheapest solution i found for them was to make an adapter to put a stock solex 34 on a custom adapter instead of the 2bbl. MUCH better mileage and driveability. Not as good as the EFI, but a much cheaper solution.

The twin ICT's on the T4 motor also benefited from the balance tube 'trick'.

Hope this helps people chase down some drivability issues. I have heard many call the ICT's 'JUNK' because of the poor idle, I love them. Still run a 1776CC Berg motor with them in my '71 bus.

Out of the VW biz for years now, down to 2 busses, the vert and a dune buggy. Here on the forum with my Honda trike, wandered over to VW land for the memories. Safe riding all!!

    Hi Randy,

Just so I get this right, are you saying you tie the right and left carbs. together with the balance tube? And you drilled the holes on the rear side of the manifolds to blow the fuel to the front? Thanks.

    Volk,

Fist of all, cool machine, your riding there, (if that's the trike your riding in the picture) If so..... How comfortable it that trike while riding?? Are long trips possible/or would that be a bar 2 bar type vehicle??

SORRY for the late reply, I usually just check the Honda forum.

Yes, with REAR being towards the BACK of the vehicle. My manifolds had a flat area which was begging to be drilled and tapped. 3-4 inch piece of 3/8" flex tubing, and then a piece of rigid tube between curved to match the back of the engine.

I will see if I can get pictures, the dual carb engine has been out of the bus for a few years. Heck, the bus has been 'resting' now for 2 years... longest I have been in a NON VW daily driver since... wow.. 1991.

    Hi Ronnie!

Sorry for the late reply, I am usually haunting the Honda forum.

Not sure what picture you are referring to, this is my ride -

Very comfortable distance rider, we usually go 200+ a day when sightseeing. The rear side covers are off in this picture, and a couple things unfinished, as I was still in 'shakedown cruise' mode after doing extensive rear end repairs.

I built several VW trikes for others over the years, but never one for me. I am also a Honda fan, so this trike and I are a good fit. 1800CC with aftermarket cam has me pulling wheelies if not careful.

Hope this doesnt destroy my VW credentials!
