Here's a short article about the crash. Does say rider not wearing helmet.... but we still have no explain as to the cause of the sudden tire/wheel loss.

This accident has caused me to think about this; I know information is collected and available as Motorcycle Accident Statistics. But I'm now wondering do Motorcycle Manufacturer's proactively investigate these instances that appear to be caused by equipment failures. I know their Legal Eagles get involved in Wrongful Death Cases and other types of Lawsuits. Just hoping someone investigates to determine an actual cause.

Ya just Gota know that the dealer will use a impact wrench for removal and install. As long as it is documented on the work order that they were torqued at # , and to be retorqued at 100 miles , there covered , as YOU sign that work order.

They do have torque sticks for impact wrenches. I used them for years never lost a wheel.
But has an official determination been made that torque/retorquing of lug nuts was at fault? Or as someone earlier mentioned, a possible bearing and/or other assembly failure?
....and who makes such investigations and determinations? We know NTSB is charged with investigations and determination of causes for air crashes and crashes on other modes of transportation. Along with recommendations to manufacturers to fix the cause(s). But who investigates fatal auto and motorcycle crashes and makes similar determinations?
This troubles me, so just thinking and wondering out loud.

I think your putting too much worry into this. Just check your wheel lug nut torque.
If you have a bad bearing, you usually hear it. I bet you would find that this poor soul had his wheels off for 1 reason or another & they were not torqued properly, then re-checked at 50/100 miles.
It is not like this is happening a lot.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
