Default Taking my buddy on my trips ... Pet Palace

Okay ... since the meandering trip has been pushed back a week, I have some time to "Play" with the pet palace.

My first thought was to get a tour pak relocator kit from DK and move it back 3" ... easy pizzy ... done. Set the tour pak between the arm rests and strap it down.

Needless to say, I'm a tad worried about sticking my little buddy on the tour pak in the wind and going 75 mph ... would he be okay ... probably. The Pet Palace is designed to do just that and has all kinds of tie downs, so it should be fine. Just not for his Highness ... LOL.

So I'm done right? Nope ... I have never liked the "pushing back the tour pak" look. I get if you have a co rider you need to do that ... I just am not a fan of the look. Not judging, I just don't like the look, is it still an option, of course.

One of the big reasons for not wanting to push the tour pak back 3" or less is the arm rests, these things are massive .. LOL. Moving the tour pak back makes these things stick out way more. I don't think I want to loosen the tour pak and move it back to test my theory, but, I am fairly sure I wouldn't like the look.

My second thought is just remove the back rest and put the pet palace in the seat. Do I "need" the back rest? No, but, it sure makes riding more comfortable. So, while I had the seat off, for the might mite install, before I put the back rest back on, I set the pet palace on the seat to see how it fit.

Really a pretty good fit ... the armrests will hold it in and I probably wouldn't even need to tie it down, but, I would.

So this morning I got to playing with the pet palace in my bedroom. I purchase a Kuryakyn Tour Pak Filler piece incase I needed it for the relocator. I figured out how to use existing connection points on the pet palace to "mount" the filler pad onto the pet palace.

Okay ... that works ... but ... is this thing sturdy enough to allow me to kick back and relax leaning on it ... I doubt it, just not designed for that ... designed for that??? ... hmmmm ... I'm in trouble now ... the brain is taking over ... LOL.

So, I'm thinking of a frame made from PVC 1/2" tubing that has two rectangular loops (one for the bottom and one for the top with four vertical legs to keep them in place. On the side that will support my back ... maybe add several vertical support legs to reinforce. Also maybe add two horizontal braces on the top rectangle on either side of the top opening to help keep the shape when I lean on it ... maybe.

I also am considering some sort of mount between the armrests that would "T" and go down into the backrest mount. Then I could mount the pad on that T.

I'll try to get these ideas on paper today and post it. If anyone else has and idea on how to brace this up ... I'm open to other ideas.

    Default Another Option

Yea ... really pricy and I think it would work well even though Kuryakyn says it won't work on the Tri. Pretty sure the tour paks are the same on a Tri or an Ultra. I might have to modify how this thing mounts to the trunk, but, I think it's doable.

I might have to make a riser to lift it off the trunk a tad.

Can anyone confirm the tour paks are the same on a 14 ultra and a 14 tri?

Looked up the part numbers on Outpost Alaska website. The 2014 Limited and TG have the same tour-pak part number for the bottom: 53000346 for the unpainted part. But the top (cover it is called) is different: 53000370 for the Limited and 53000347 for the TG. I'm thinking that may be because the Limited comes with the tour-pak rack and the TG does not.

Thanks ... the bottom is where it mounts ... so that's the important part.

Was thinking possibly using the smallest diameter PVC pipe glued together as an interior frame inside the palace? Sized for needed strength when you lean back, but also not greatly reducing the available interior space for your companion.

I was thinking the same ... or even maybe steel rod welded ... but that might be overkill. ... I'm really thinking the Kuryakyn thing will work the best ... just need to decide if I wanna spend the money.

Okay ... so my brain won't let this go ... I read the instructions for the Kuryakyn thing ... and basically ... you unbolt the tour pak ... bolt the bottom half of the relocator to the tour pak mounts and the top half to the tour pak ...

    Here's a pic of the Tri's mount ...

    Name: Tour Pak.jpg

It basically has a chrome mounting base ... for the life of me, I don't see why the Kuryakyn thing won't just fit between that chrome mounting base and the tour pak??? If anyones sees a reason this won't work ... please let me know.

I was kind of worried about the "Levers" on the adjustment coming out so far that they might hit the ribs on the top of the trunk, but, I kind of dismissed that because the chrome mounting rack sits on the top of the ribs, so, I think they would clear no problem. My next issue was maybe the "Levers" would scratch the fenders. I can't imagine they are that long ... but I will go out and eyeball that spacing again.

I just watched the video about this product in full screen mode. There is a scene where they are showcasing the chrome back plate on the thing. Paused it there. When doing that the locking arms are fully extended and are close to or maybe just a 1/4" to 1/2" sticking out past the width of the tour pak. The fenders are way outside that width. Short of maybe needing a few different length screws, I'm fairly well convinced this will work.

As a side note, in the instructions, when they talk about installing the filler pad, they talk about using the included screws to install it ... Maybe they got the message about the OEM screws not being long enough ... maybe

Well the only thing I know about the Kuryakyn Adjustable Relocator for 14 and up is, it comes with a hefty price tag. If it meets your unique needs, then it should be dollars well spent.

As far as the filler pad goes, the one I received a few weeks ago came with no hardware. So I'm...

Amen to the price tag ... Before I do anything else ... I'm gonna take the pet palace back out to the tri and figure how much room I need to still use the backrest ... If it's 2" or less, I may just do the DK one ... probably the route I'll go.

Fuzzy the DK relo bracket has several different adjustments so you don't have to push the TP all the way back. Honestly with the Kury filler pad it looks just fine. Personally I think it looks better. I think without the relo bracket the TP sits too far forward and interferes with getting the screw at the rear of the seat removed. Lots more room when it is pushed back a bit.

Are you sure you had the Pet Palace perched on the seat in the correct position?

Your pics look like you have it perched backwards as compared to the pics on Kuryakyn’s website.

Reason I first noticed this is the zippered top was opening in the wrong direction it seems to me...then too all the sissybar attachment loops were facing you instead of the trunk.

maybe it would fit the current setup better if you turned it around?

But maybe my vision of it is skewed..I’m worn out from chasing my tail with this move and packing, packing, packing.

I tried both ways, there is a storage pocket opposite the sissy bar connections that fits snuggly between the rear speakers, if I turn the pet palace around, there would be a gap in the middle of the sissy bar connections ad the tour pack (I tried it as a possible place for the half helmet, no go), and it would be about 2" closer to me. I don't think it matters which way it sits. It may be skewed a bit as I didn't tighten it down. It was a quick test.

I'm on my 2nd Pet Palace. The 1st lasted 5 years. I have it on the seat behind me and it doubles as a backrest.I only weigh 157 so it's not a big deal. You can stiffin it up ( the Palace) by cutting pieces of Luan and fitting them internally. I wont put the carrier on the trunk rack as it's only rated 10 pounds- but who pays attention to that.Something else-wearing a fur coat with the sun beating down is torture.Riding with the sun at a low angle is best for pooch. If I'm riding in the hottest part of the day I'll put one of those blue freezer packs under a towel for my dog to keep him cool.Frequent stops are in order-30 minutes and then check on the dog and let him out. Hey they cant tell you their uncomfortable.

You can stiffin it up ( the Palace) by cutting pieces of Luan and fitting them internally. Good to know ... He's used to his "pouch" on my chest and I can "see" how he's doing. Gonna be a learning curve for me and him.

What are you using now that has your dog on your chest?

I'd sure like to take my little
Chihuahua with me on rides but

don't know what the best way is. I like the idea of having her

right there in front so I can see her at a glance and see if that

tongue is on the ground or not. Got a link for what you are

using currently or is it just a backpack worn backwards?
The only reason some people are still alive is it's illegal to shoot them.
