Default 2001 Goldwing CSC Trike. Time for new rear tires. What do you like?

Live in Dallas, ride 500-1000 mi per year, but want a quiet and soft ride. What tire are you liking on the back? Do you get it installed at your motorcycle dealership or your car tire dealer?

Mine came with Goodrich Radial TAs. I have 28k on them now. I intend to replace with the same. Shortly. I take my tires off and bring them in to my local tire store.

If you only ride 500 -1000 miles a year, (if that's true mileage) any brand will do... USE the same size that came with the trike....

Your tires will rot out before they wear out with that low of mileage. Change every seven years, regardless of miles.

Just ordered 2 General Altimax RT43 (205/65R16) for mine. Decent reviews on TireRack for Dry/Wet traction.

Also considered the Yokohama Avid Ascend GT and Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring that also had good ratings. Had trouble finding these locally in the boonies, though.

But as burnerboy said, with only 500-1000 miles /yr, just about anything will do yaz. Watch your "Born on Date", older tires can fail easier with age, regardless of tread.

Most car/tire manufacturers recommend evaluating and/or replacement of tires after 6 years of service.

    YMMV

    Something I didn't know:

UV rays will degrade tires too, causing sidewall failure.

A Floridian neighbor told me of a relative that bought a used, low mileage truck with tires older than 6 years. The truck had sat in the sun for years. 3 of 4 tires went bad within a year due to blowouts.

That's why you see RVs in storage with "tire covers" down south. Likewise trailers with spares on them, covers on the spares.

I replaced both rear tires with Cooper Trendsetter SE Tires from Tire Central & Service. This is a all season, quiet-running tire with excellent traction. Tire Central mounted and balanced them. I am very pleased with the tires and Tire Central.

    Default Hello Mark

had a pair of Dunlop tires on my 1500 trike and if you hit any water on the road they would hidroplan in a min. I still had lots of tread on them but started looking for a better wet tire.

I talk to a lot of people that road and 3 of them ask me to look at a Yokohama tire.

I got a Yokohama Ascend I have put 1000 miles on them and still have 11/32 of tread, we was coming back from Kerrville, Tx. and hit a good rain, lots of water on the road and the tires did not hidroplan at all. it was a 75,000 mile tire, we will see how many miles I will get . ( my rule on driving in the rain, slow down 15 mph )

Currently, my trikes rear tires show zero, none, nada.... absolutely no age cracking or other signs of age. The only sun time they ever see is when ridden, otherwise trike sits in a light tight room, no sun, no electric motors, etc. Sidewalls and tread show NO cracks, still new looking smooth surface rubber. They show a date code 2005.

But then …. I have seen constant sun kill tires in a few short years, cause stems to crumble even. Even some tire dressings will degrade the rubber.

My trike's rear wheels are 15x7 ASA 5 spoke and lug pattern is same as 4 lug Fox body Mustangs, early '80s T-birds, Fairmonts, even Pintos. 4 lug on 4.25" circle as I recall. Trike was built with fat 245/60-15 Dunlop RWL Qualifyer GT rears (worn bad in centers) and soon I swapped to 215/70-15 Lemans RWL to save about 4 ponds mass per tire, maintain same OD, and give up an inch of tread width to lessen hydroplane chances (and I liked the lettering). They are very much like Firestone Indy 500s were. I added 1/2" spacers to put tire sidewall back near fender like it was, used longer Morosso studs (1/2-20).

How's the ride on the Ascend? I'm waiting on new rims (16" vs current 15") and once i verify they fit (2013 F6b with MC Raptor conversion) will be in the market for new tires.... getting a headache trying to decide on which ones to get. High tread rating, low tread rating, load rating, speed rating, customer reviews, UUQA whatever ratings.... lol. I have a tendency to over analyze which is a double edge sword at times

I think the two most important objectives are shedding water and softer side walls. Load, speed and tread wear don’t really apply on a trike in most conditions. Total weight of most trikes are 1200 to 1500 lbs and who among the triking community rides for extended miles at 100 plus MPH. As far as handling goes.... you lose comfort with more aggressive tires so it depends on your style of riding when choosing tires.

Totally agree.... but what is the "measurement" for softer sidewalls?

Generally the greater the load rating, the stiffer the side walls

Low profile tires will be stiffer side walls

It's a trike. Any car tires you put back there are gonna be way more than adequate for the few hundred pounds carried. Going from 15 to 16" wheels will result in a shorter sidewall if you're aiming to keep overall outer diameter the same, and you can expect some harsher ride. The biggest wear factor will be psi or too much, which will prematurely wear the centers and increase harshness.

If looking for 16s, I think a good start is about 225/60-16 … same size as is on kabillions of cars. Places like Tire Rack have all sorts of tires and for each tire, a spec page to allow comparisons of widths, diameters, etc.

    Cool

Ended up ordering a set of wheels that are 16 x 8 with a +6 offset (4.5" backspace), original rims were 5 x 7 with ~ 4.25" backspace (this is on the IRS motor trike conversion) and the new ones seem to have plenty of clearance around the suspension. Also order a set of 225/55/16 tires as they were the closest to original ones with respect to circumference and width. Hopefully will have them mounted by the end of the week.

my ride is good I run 22lbs cold. I have not put many miles on them but all looks good, I really like the deep tread the wear bar is way down there.
