Default Unverified Rumors that I heard this weekend!

I cannot say if the following rumors are true. I was told them by a well placed source, and confirmed just today by another so-so source. BUT, that is not enough to hang ones hat on...but they are interesting, and make a bit of sense.

    1. HD is going to tighten up their warranty even further with the 2020 models. Supposedly adding or modifying anything electrical will have a negative impact on ones warranty. The implications of this are huge.

The reasoning for the above is that MoCo has made so much more $ after agreeing to the illegal Consent Decree that they want to expand on it.

This next rumor would be a welcome one. As an owner of a 2019 TG I hope it is true!!!

    2. A new, Non-HD branded, warranty will become available later this year. It will function like an aftermarket Extended Warranty, BUT IT WILL BE Effective during the first 2 years of the factory warranty.

This is HUGE. It will allow one to do whatever they want to their bike without being concerned about HD's overly restrictive (and illegal) factory warranty.

This new ESP will not have restrictions on it like the HD warranty or the HD branded ESP.

I hope the first one is not true, but would not surprise me if it was.

I hope the second one IS true...and it certainly makes sense that someone sees a market for it.

    Time will tell.

Very interesting. When I was having all the issues with the tri, the service manager hinted that HD wanted to go further with the warranty issues, including electrics, add on parts such as handle bars etc. The aftermarket parts warranty would be smart, although I think it will have its limitations. Thanks for the heads up.

Bolded above is part of what I was told also. Handlebars????? That one perplexed me a bit, are they having an unusually high number of warranty claims resulting from the electrics on the bar controls?

I my business i gave all my costumers an unlimited guarantee......And every now and then a costumer would come back with a problem....And i could clearly see someone else monkeyed with it [Bet it happened to you]....So in the spirt of good will i would correct it ''Gratis''...

But, Next time it will cost you.....As much as i dislike Harley i can see where they are coming from via Warrantees....

If harley does what is in the first one, I think harley is on the way out IMHO, people aren't going to buy harley's if they are going to be that strict with their warranty, I'm beginning to think the EPA and goverment are ruining harley and harley has no guts to stand up to them, just my thoughts.

As the second part sounds good to me, I know the extended warranty I bought at my dealer covers quite a bit just like the harley warranty that comes with a new bike. According to my dealer I can put a hitch on my bike and still be covered, don't know for a fact if this is true or not, it is a Protective Asset Protection

    All for now Trampas

If you think about it, the motor company is trying to control the market on parts. That’s my opinion only. The head game is people want to keep their warranty vs those who don’t care. To keep the warranty they will have to use hd parts, so it’s a win win for hd, the sale of parts, and labor $$$$, and/or less warranty payout saving the company money. Time will tell. Again just my warped thinking.

Probably right , Jack.......How many here have had problems with those [Delicate] switches after changing bars and or grips.....Multiply that by the people that aren't on Trike-Talk...

And you can see the reasoning behind it......

So bear with me,if i understand it correctly you will be able to purchase an extended warranty just so you can do non factory add on's.I get it but dont agree with it one bit, these bikes have become overly expensive and in just my opinion the quality has suffered. Now i know there are bikes that have a GOZILLION miles on them with little or no issues. But if you are one of the unfortunate folks ( like myself) whom has had 8 warranty claims then this does not give you a warm and fuzzy feeling. When i read that you heard a rumor i was hoping it was that HD had found a true fix for the oil migration or that the were adding a Road Glide trike to the line up.

A bit off topic but GM is really the same way. If its not a GM product the warranty maybe void. Sounds like more are going this route and Harley doing the same.

It is illegal to condition warranty coverage based on use of HD service or HD parts. Many auto manufacturers have been slapped hard for doing so.

    Here is just one example-

Thats for replacing a stock part with a stock equivalent I think. Harley people seldom do that. So the new warranty would replace the voided harley warranty, do to modifications not deemed to be standard. So if harley decides a failure is due to a performance mod then this company will just pickup the tab? Its gonna be interesting because the only reason to buy that insurance is because you have made a nonconforming modification to your bike.

Anything you do to any vehicle that’s considered tampering with the Emissions controls Can void certain parts of the warranty: And although I don’t think it’s ever happened ‘But the dealership can refuse to do any work on the vehicle or even have it in his service department 😱..... luckily on motorcycles they don’t do mandatory emissions checks ‘Yet..

I'm already kinda testy that a 36k bike needs a ton of upgrades, albeit not all expensive, to run at proper temp. A new Tri, with the needed mods, is probably at 38k now. For that kind of money, it ought to be fully warrantied against just about everything.

Harley guys are a unique breed. Spend a ton of money on the worlds best motorcycle and then start fixin it. Then spend thousands more on a warranty. Then modify it so the warrany will be void if detected by the dealer. Keep the stock parts with them at all times in case they break down. Then they can return it to stock before the tow truck gets there. So as not to void their warranty?I know if I have to explain it you'll never understand.

Price increase on the 2019's has pushed the OTD price well into the forty plus thousand price range w/o any needed mods.
