Question about Converting 2007 Fatboy

I've had several people tell me that I will lose too much power when I trike it, if I don't do something to increase hp. I ride single, but don't want power issues. Suggestions?

Welcome. I don't think that you will have a problem at all. I will be willing to bet someone who has triked her Fatboy will be responding to this if she ever wakes up this morning.

When compared to say a Wing-HD's are anemic to start with!
Having said that-most of us are not trying to win any races and I consider my Wing over powered rather than the HD being underpowered!
I tested a HD Ultra w/88 engine w/Lehman conversion and found the power to be sufficient for normal riding. My wife and I are big people and ride 2up all the time.
You can always do something later if you feel the need.

Hi Donna, Welcome to TrikeTalk!

I triked my 2000 Fat Boy in '06 with a Champion fixed suspension, and I love it.
I lost no power at all, and continue to ride with and keep up with my husband and his Street Glide all over the country. Several Harley (2-wheel) riders have raised that concern, asking me to ride in the back of the pack so I don't slow 'em down. They let me ride anywhere in the group after the first 1/2 hour, as it is not an issue; and if we are in the twisties, they complain that I push them too hard.

So don't hesitate to add the trike kit at all! The stability of the trike is wonderful, and I don't have to worry about gravel or uneven roads any more .

I had an 04 Ultra Classic with the motor trike kit bumped the power up to 1550 and it was a little underpowered but I'm an aggressive rider. Test rode a 2007 Ultra Classic with a CSC kit and another with a Trike Shop (Roadsmith) kit while at a rally in Litchville, Il. and they were fine with the 96 engine. So trike that Fatboy out and enjoy the ride.

I'm not that familiar with the Fatboy but if it has the 6 speed I would consider changing the countershaft sprocket from a 32 to a 30. Do this when you have the kit installed that way it won't add too much to the labor charges. If you will be primarily a solo rider you may not need to do this but the 6 speed HDs are, iin MHO, geared way too tall.

And Nana....Love your name and your input. My babies call me Nana. You answered alot of my other questions about stability and riding the twisties. Somehow the last couple of years I've gotten gun shy on my 2 wheeler, so I'm really looking forward to the trike. I also will have the fixed suspension and that has also been a topic of conversation with people telling me to get only the independent suspension. But after test driving both suspensions, I chose the fixed.

I've had no regrets about getting the fixed suspension. Honestly, both are excellent with the independent possibly giving a slightly more comfy ride (although I believe that difference is more for the passenger than the driver). The fixed suspension generally will give you a little edge on the handling in the twisties. You will need to allow 300 - 500 miles to get really comfortable with steering rather than leaning in turns. Take your time and don't rush it --- you will soon realize that you feel very comfortable with it.

I converted my wife's Softail Deluxe about a year ago, and my only complaint is the extra weight and taking off from a stop. Now this is only my opinion as my wife doesn't mind. To me, the 6 speed gearing is too tall to begin with, and with the extra weight of the kit, I find myself slipping the clutch more just to take off at a decent rate. Like Dwight suggests, I am planning on changing the 32 tooth transmission pulley to a 30 tooth to help.

On the '07 and up with the 30 tooth pulley change you will loose 6th gear light and have to recal the speedo. The thundermax tuner and i beleive the tts tuner are the only ones you can get both back with. Do some research on the tuners as they are a big plus on the 96" bikes. Ive done 3 of the pulley changes and all are on '07 and up, it works great and makes 6th gear a lot more usable.
