Fuzzy..that sounds very much like the BS we had to go through to get a vehicle re-registered from Texas to New Mexico at the last oil company I worked for. I thought they were crazy when I heard this...nope...New Mexico has some weird stuff going on also at their DMV.

They do strange stuff at the DMV here, when I was in Deming with friends I went to get an ID since my PA license expired a year ago. They asked me if I had a driver's license in PA and I told them I did but it expired, they told me if it is less than 5 years since it expired I could have a license and lo and behold I took my PA driving record to the office in Lovington and I came out with a license complete with motorcycle endorsement. Took the eye test and paid all the fees and now I'm good.

Default Since I have a month before my inspection ... LOL

The plastic company was not able to get me the marine grade stuff because when they pulled the pallets off the piece that would of been for me ... it wasn't a full sheet ... someone had put a short piece back on the pallet and it wasn't big enough for my trailer floor. Would be two weeks for it to get here.

Ordered cancelled and headed to Pacific Steel to get aluminum diamond plate ... LOL, so I thought ... $196.45 for a 1/8" 40" x 48" piece .. I'm sorry ... not happening. So I opted for 1/16" steel diamond plate. Only $60 cut. I also will have a 8" x 48" drop. Got plans for that too ... .

So the guy cuts it ... and brings it out on a fork lift???? He actually cut 14 gauge. I told him no way that was mine. He checked the invoice and yep he messed up. He called the office and they offered me the 14 gauge for $40, with the drop. I agreed if they would put it in my truck, it was parked about 150' away, closest I could get ... the kid that messed up, drove the fork lift out to the truck and loaded it (I tipped him $5, not much, but, he was beaming. Guess he doesn't get tipped much for messing up. Hey he's human like me ... well ... maybe not that human .

So off to the house to unload and mount and paint .... nope ... not today.

I get home hit the garage keypad to open the door ... it starts to go up and BANG ... and it stops. I tried to help it ... nope .... it ain't moving. I open the side door and one of the springs is broken. Guess what I got to do all day.

I go to the only garage door company in town, Overland Door. They recommend replacing the springs in pairs, because my springs are 2 1/4" and nobody has sold them for over 8 years. Of course, mixing a 2 1/4" and a 2" would require me to drill my 2 1/4" spring end to fit with the 2". Couple that with the fact the one spring would be new on one would be about 12 years old. Of course, I opted for 2 springs. Son I'm really glad I didn't pop for aluminum ... ... the springs are pricy.

If you have ever done this job by yourself, you know it's a biggie, and of course, you've seen my garage, I had to move lots of stuff to make room to work, including the Fat Bottom Girl (only pushed it forward, still couldn't get the door open). And of course, it's like 100* in the garage and you need the door closed to work on it.

Six hour job, but, it works better than I ever remember, i had to adjust the opening and closing force ... the new springs are great, without the opener attached, I can open it with one hand ... needless to say ... the steel diamond plate is still in the truck ... LOL ... not really, I moved it onto the little trailer and pulled it into the shade. I was afraid when the garage broke, that the steel in the sun would get warm enough to melt my bed liner .

So ... tomorrow is another day ... wonder what the drama will be tomorrow.

Default Better Day and Some Progress

Decided to "adjust" the diamond plate to fit the trailer. There are six bolt heads sticking up from the frame, so, I either take the bolts out and weld the frame or notch the steel to fit around them.

I opted for notching since I didn't want to repaint the whole trailer, maybe just the parts that show ... LOL.

I painted the steel after test fitting on the bottom side, that was about 6:30 am. By 9 am it was dry, I put it on the trailer, taped or bagged the lights, covered the tongue with cardboard and painted it gloss black. I just did around the frame and the diamond plate.

Notice the fenders are removed ... had an idea and if it works .. should be kewl.

I will paint the tongue after the State police inspect it. There is a funky warning label that will be gone before I paint the tongue, I want to be sure they don't want to see that. I'll remove the coupler and tape up the VIN Plate, then just shoot it quick.

Yeah...I found that out when I moved to TN....problem is you will get stopped in every state you drive thru. Then you have to explain the TN requirements etc. etc. Plates are so cheap, I just got one, not worth the hassle for me. And Fuzzy ~ That trailer looks Killer!

Guess I was lucky. Pulled a Bushtec trailer from 1999 until just a couple years ago and took it to every state save Alaska and Hawaii, lol, (some states many times) and was never stopped or asked about plates ever. I did buy a plate and kept it in the trailer 'just in case.' Didn't mount it because I didn't want to drill holes in that beautiful custom painted trailer body.

No problems yet with out of state police. But it’s nice when you don have to go through government bureaucracy and wait it lines at the MDV and deal with the state employees

    Default Remember the fender project????

Welp ... had some time yesterday afternoon. as pretty hot, but, all I did was paint my project ... the paint dried ... but, we had big wind today so they may need a good cleaning before I install them .... so here is my project:

    Name: Fender Diamond 1.jpg
Views: 241
Size: 719.3 KB

I too the drops, cut inserts for the inside of the fenders. Drilled holes where I can use the fender mounting bolts to keep the inserts in place. The diamond plate will be on the inside near the cargo carrier. This will keep water and rocks from attacking the action packers. My plan is to mount them and the cargo carrier tomorrow. I also made a plate I plan to mount mount on the back of the trailer above the tail light to mount the license plate to, also from the same drop ... there is only about 1.5" by 4" piece of the stuff left. I just tossed in in the metal recycle trash can ... need to get that to the recycle ... my 400-500# might be worth $10-15 ... LOL.

Here's a close up of one of the fenders:

    The trailer is coming together!

I noticed the aged and beautiful look of the wood in picture 2 of your post #48.

It appears to be part of another trailer you have judging from the position of a trailer tongue coming forth from it. Aged “barn wood” can fetch a premium price.

    Thumbs up Unique and Functional

Your project has progressed and morphed into a very nice trailer. Will the rack have to be mounted for the upcoming inspection?

Default Early start ... gets hot by noon

So today was mounting the car carrier, license plate backer, and fenders.

You may have noticed that the fender inserts (Diamond Plate) are not installed ... turns out ... you need to compress the fenders to mount them ... so when I made holes, of course they didn't line up. So, I am going to Pacific Steel and get them to cut them to fit between the trailer floor and the top of the fender. Then I'll mount them with some 1/4" 20 bolts ... I am getting a little sick of the little trailer ... LOL. So, this will be just as good looking, but, way easier than trying to figure out where new holes need to be ... and I would have to trim all edges to make it fit inside the compressed fender. I really want to be done with this thing so I can start doing the ceramic stuff on my truck.

That is going to be a great looking and functional trailer Fuzzy! Way more elaborate than what I've seen most guys do with one of those Harbor Freight trailers.

I noticed the aged and beautiful look of the wood in picture 2 of your post #48.

It appears to be part of another trailer you have judging from the position of a trailer tongue coming forth from it. Aged “barn wood” can fetch a premium price.
    Actually .... it's a 1958 Chevy P/U bed homemade trailer ... I use it to haul trash

I was gonna just bring it like I built it from the kit, but, since I had a month until the inspection, I decided to finish it and move on.

I have a feeling the tongue will be black before the inspection ... I hate the red.

Been thinking about learning to do pin striping ... maybe practice on the trailer in silver to match the trike??? LOL ... make the insanity stop ....
