Default Early 6 volt splitcase axle removal.

I need to repair reverse on my VW trike and have not learned the step to remove the axles. Does a person just split the case or is there a bolt or snap ring that I'm missing ?Name: trike 2.jpg

Thanks Gorilla, I have the trans out and the axle tubes removed and all other pieces, But where I thought there would be a snap ring. "NADDA" I suppose I could just split the case and slid it past the axle. but sure would like to hear from a been there done that source.

Sorry to say guys but I think I must reach back farther in time. I've seen both web sites but not the right tranny. On the inside of my bell housing I see what appear to be dates formed into the casting on one side it's 10 - 11 - 28 on one half and 13 - 11 - 38 and I'm thinking back before the war or during the cases where joined to create this Trans. these numbers are not stamped but part of the mold during casting. A short build history is I merged a 1600 cc single port out of a spray coupe to the trans with some creative grinding on bell housing and a mod to the throw out bearing arms. I have this in the basement hoping to give it a go.Name: fus 22.jpg

Hens Teeth Alert!!!! This is a non-syncro 1st gear transaxle last used in 1959. These were built for 25 and 36 HP motors. Parts are obsolete and rare for these and really only of interest to the restorers at this point. Check out: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/ for more info and parts availability. You will probably be better off upgrading to a later model transaxle with parts availability. As far as I know, with some caveats, any swing axle transaxle up to 1968 will work for you. Check out Rex's thread: https://www.triketalk.com/forum/thre...-build-a-trike for a lot of good info. We will be glad to answer any questions about interchangeability for you (and believe me there is a lot of interchangeability!!!). Good Luck!

    And also....

This split case is going to be very low geared and easy to break with a 1600.

As far as mounts....there is a specific model of nose mount or and adapter mount that you will need for the nose cone end. But other than that it is a direct bolt in.

On the axles. I have seen where folks have used the old split case axles in a tunnel trans swap. So that makes me assume they have the same snap rings and fulcrum plates.

Any 61 to 66 trans will be the easiest fit, but will still be low geared for a 1600. A late 66 through 68 trans is the one to have. It will have the gearing for a 1600, even though you will still want taller gearing still.

I split the case and found some bad gears. 1st is half wore out and reverse is a crying shame and the 10 tooth input shaft gear is half wore away. So off to the internet and see what can be gotten and if not, time to take good advice and upgrade to some thing newer. Thanks much all for the insight and I will do my best to become a active member. I have been a long time member of HBA Forum and this is a great change to aid in my love of building and riding my Trike. My boy can't wait till he gets a ride. Name: trike 3.jpg

I hear that in your area you only have 2 seasons, winter and the 4th of July.

Seriously though, a good source of info, parts, and local services is your local VW club. Here is a link to one in your area: https://rrvwc.com/

There are lots of transaxle rebuilders but they are almost exclusively on the west coast. You will find used transaxles on ebay or craigslist but you have no way of knowing what shape they are in. Got to remember that these items are old and have a lot of wear (on a good day). They are rebuildable but you need some special jigs to assemble the gear cluster and set the shifting forks. Generally, the VW club folks will know who can locally source a good used trans or who might have the jigs for a rebuild. Most VW guys are pack rats with parts and usually have a collection of parts and parts vehicles. They may even know of someone who is looking for the split transaxle parts for a restoration (swap, trade, barter? ).

Good luck with your project and keep us posted.

I personally would not put any money at all into that model of trans.

I believe you are totally right about upgrading to a newer Trans. There is many used Spray coupes in this area and beings the transaxle is out I will investigate the poss. of transplanting one of the trans out of one of them into the Trike. I guess I'll start with axle length. If I remember correctly my trans was from an early bus not sure of year but the farmer I got it from had made a pulley to hook to the input shaft and ran a horz Briggs engine with a belt tension er and looking at the gears I think he used 1st and reverse. I had no idea of condition until I started to ride the Trike never could get reverse but was able to growl 1st gear into place. heck that's half the fun of building a Trike. Thanks for the Samba ad info. Stay tuned for more from the northern flat lands. Don

    Default Change up

To all who jumped in and helped especially DB Snu Snu. I decided to buy some used parts and get back on the road and believe supplier will help get her done. I watched some U -tube videos of some home made Trikes and what amazing different builds out there That are so far better then my old ride. I ride and fly low and slow and in aircraft you learn that it's not the hp in engine you have but more the stress you add to the airframe So throttle is your best friend. I suppose it's close to the same on these old vw swingaxles you can have the ponies but you must keep off the throttle some to keep from breaking something and even with that there is no guarantee. Like I said all THANKS.

I repaired my trike with used parts and works great and then worked on getting it ready to sit out in the weather full time. The 62 Beetle in picture is up for a brake job and I will say it does have a smoother shift. I.m glad I tore into the old trans it taught me a lot and I think with the trike trans it important to remember there is no first gear sync.Name: trike 4.jpg

Sometimes it is just more important to get back in the wind.

Be gentle with it, you could easily be putting 2X the hp into it than it was designed for.

I don't have any room to talk.....I am putting over 4X the hp into my trans (and I have broken it before).
