Have any of you had performance problems since conversion of your Indian

This is my first post here in the Indian forum. I recently had my 2017 Roadmaster converted through the dealer by MotorTrike.

Issues I am having and wondering if any of you also encountered some of the same

First I had to have the antenna for the radio reinstalled by the dealer, no one told me it would not be kept as is once the conversion was completed.

Second is the performance of the 111 engine, I have the stage 2 cams and stage one exhaust and high performance air cleaner as original with the conversion,

there is no power for the engine on the highway I cannot even keep the speed limit

only be up from 60-65 in 6th gear and if I am going on a down hill maybe at 70, it appears the added weight for the engine to pull at speed is very poor.

I believe due to the stress on the engine and drive train the my clutch slipped or failed 100 miles out of town in 5th to 6th gear and

I lost power with the engine sending the RPMs up and no power in any gear even though I could shift up and down through each gear,

then while on the side of the road going into 1st there was no pull at all to get moving just the RPMs on the engine going up.

First thought was the drive belt broke, but I could feel it intact underneath the rear end.

Anyway after a long tow home and the trike now at the dealer waiting for diagnosis, these I my only options to remedy the engine issue.

1. Have an aftermarket tuner and MAP installed for the 111 to see if this will increase the performance of the engine, to allow enough power to keep the engine from straining with the added weight of the conversion.

2. Have the 116 big bore kit installed and the MAP for the 116 installed.

Just a shot in the dark here....But could it be that the clutch was bad at or the time of the conversion [Caused by] And the added weight of the conversion was the reason for the lack of top end, And then finally gave up and fried......

Sounds like the clutch was bad to start with. There isnt that much added weight, over riding two up and loaded down for a trip some place. A clutch wouldnt let go that soon unless it was already bad. I've ridden two up on a Ultra, pulling a bout 400lbs when I had my Bunkhouse camper. Did it three years and never even had to adjust the clutch... Just my two cents worth.

Maybe like stated the clutch was worn a lot ... are the indians a wet clutch? If so, could the fluid level have been low and caused early failure.

I rode the Roadmaster as a two wheeler for two years and had no engine warranty issues, April the factory warranty ended, I rode in and out of traffic to work and on longer highway trips when I was living in Arizona before moving here to Sturgis

After the dealer received the trike conversion back from MotorTrike in May, I asked them to do a service on it which they did and there were no issues brought up at that time.

So once I get a diagnosis from Indian I will let everyone know. I had a 2015 Triglide and never had a performance issue in 6th gear or with keeping up with the speed limit on the highway.

The clutch is a wet clutch and not hydraulic.

there was no abnormal sounds when I lost power when shifting. Clutch cable is intact and I can move up and down in gears.

My wife was on the back with me so added weight there, but we rode the trike to Devils Tower and Deadwood before this happened and only the lag in 6th gear from 60-65 and no higher speed was the issue before this happened.

I did talk to another trike owner at the Indian dealer here in Sturgis and the 2016 Roadmaster that he had converted he said the 116 kit and a tuner and mapping made the difference between night and day with his performance.

So I may be headed in that direction.

We have a 2015 Roadmaster that was converted in 2017 with CSC kit. The engine is stock with K&N air filter, PCVX tuner and Supertrapp mufflers. We have had no issues with power even 2-up and pulling a trailer.

From your description it sounds like the clutch has gone south. I'd suggest replacing with Barnett clutch pack and springs.

I recieved a call today from Indian of Sturgis.

The clutch is definetly smoked. The added weight to the load on the engine is most likely the reason.

I will let the service dept know in the AM whether or not to install a heavy duty clutch kit and tune the engine with the RVS tuner and map for a 111 or to install the clutch kit and a 116 big bore kit and tune with a 116 map.

I have the same motortrike kit on my 2016 Indian road master and had no problems with the clutch, only problem I've had is it keeps having to stop when the locals turn on them darn blue lights..

The clutch is definetly smoked. The added weight to the load on the engine is most likely the reason.

I will let the service dept know in the AM whether or not to install a heavy duty clutch kit and tune the engine with the RVS tuner and map for a 111 or to install the clutch kit and a 116 big bore kit and tune with a 116 map.

I have the same motorworks kit on my 2016 Indian road master and had no problems with the clutch, only problem I've had is it keeps having to stop when the locals turn on them darn blue lights.. the stock clutch and springs should handle the kit and trailer unless you ride it or it wasn't adjusted properly to start with.

Is there any chance the wrong oil was used at some point? I had it happen to me when a new tech serviced my Kaw Momad years ago it took around 2k miles to cook the clutch. When the dealer told me about it having the wrong oil it I told him his service department was to only one's to service the bike. He pulled the service ticket and found the tech had put the wrong oil in. His insurance company wasn't happy considering they had to replace the bike and change over all my addons.

and Motortrike kit and has never had a problem getting way past 70 on the highway pulling the two of us (over 500lbs). I'd look at the oil installed on your last service.

What was the ultimate outcome to your clutch problem. I have csc arrow kit on my 2015 chief vintage. I runs like a dog. I removed the trapp disc's and had a slight improvement. Contacted csc and of course the added weight on a 111 is the issue. In my case, downshifting to 5th and even 4th on a decent steep hill. Trying it in 6th isn't possible and confirmed by csc. Additionally, I may have also had some bad gas at frys. Switched over to chevron with techron and cleaned stage one intake. Around town she pulls pretty well today. Last thing I want to do is lug the engine and smoke the clutch.

I know this is an old thread bit hope the author can shed some light on his experience

Did you ever do anything to get the trike better ? I know a tuner that does remote tuning on Indians. You need to have a Dyno Jet power vision 3 (PV3) He did mine It took a while to get it right. Theres a big hill on rt 202 has a climbing lane, when he started tuning I went up that hill in 4th gear 72 mph then 5th gear around 83 mpg this saturday put in a new download tune he made 93mph 6th gear, average around 39 mpg.
