    Default Parking brake cable ring

    Hi, I am getting ready to remove my front Parking Brake cable and install a new one since the ADJUSTER HEX cover is frozen and cannot be loosened for adjustment due to rust and "gunk" on the screw threads inside the ADJUSTER HEX cover. In turn, I have read the front PB cable's removal instructions in the HD Triglide Supplement Service Manual. The Service Manual instructs there are "cable retaining rings" that must be removed from the flat metal piece at the end of the cable (see attachment) which are used to hold the rear Parking Brake cables, as well. While reading the Service Manual, I was hoping it would provide a picture of the "cable retaining rings" and their exact placement on the Pins that fits through the outside and center holes on the flat metal piece. Does anybody know what the "cable retaining rings" look like, what they are made of, what tool is used to remove them, and can I re-use them to install the new front PB cable? Thank you, Allen S.

    Look @ #12 here, they are E clips, use a small screw driver to pop them out

    They are made of mild spring steel

    IF you are careful not to damage them you can reuse them

    If not you can get them @ any good auto parts store

    They are used on many brake applications

    When you re install them into their grooves give the cable a tug, if the clips are locked in the groove you are good to go

    Dont forget the washer behind the clip, it puts tension on the cable to mount area

    Thanks Jack, I know what to look for now. I ordered the PB cable from Surdyke for $108. The local dealer wanted $170 for the cable plus $140 for its installation. It looks easy enough to replace. If I run into any additional issues, I will get back with you. If possible, I like doing my own service and parts replacement. Even at 68 years old, I feel like I am never to old to learn something new.

    Good deal, if you take your time this job should be pretty easy

    Lube the heck out of this new cable and adjuster, if you still have the rubber boot that goes over the adjuster, put some lube inside it also when you are done with your adjustment.

    I like to check my adjustment @ every oil change, it gives a better rear brake pedal and I know the parking brake is working correctly.

    I know a lot of owners bad mouth the parking brake set up, IMO it is not a bad set up nor is it the best, however if one keeps it adjusted correctly it should work as designed JMO

    Hi Jack, Thank you for the "E-Clip Ring" pictures. After further reading and looking at the Harley Rear Brake cable diagrams, it appears the "E-Clip Rings" are not attached onto the two rear brake cable pins that go through the outside holes of the PB front cable equalizer bar end metal piece. From what I can gather the "E-Clip Rings" are clipped onto the PB front cable at the "side notched-out" holes where the cable goes through and is secured to the PB pedal bracket and rear equalizer bracket. Basically, the two rear brake cable pins, in the outside equalizer bar holes, are simply pulled out and the rear cables removed from the equalizer bar once the "E-Clip Rings" are removed from the PB pedal bracket and rear equalizer bracket where the PB front cable is held in place and secured by the brackets' "side notched-out" holes. Is that correct? I am going to start the Parking Brake OEM front cable removal and new cable installation tomorrow. I would work on it today; however, I have to fry "Crappie" this afternoon for my Cousin who is visiting. Thanks, Allen S.

    Hi Jack, Just wanted to let you know I got the OEM Parking Brake front cable removed and the new one installed plus did the PB adjustment. Put plenty of grease on the exposed threads and inside the black rubber cover. Slipped the black rubber cover over the metal HEX cover, jamnut, all exposed threads up to the Parking Brake Pedal bracket. Parking Brake works great now. Hold the bike in neutral when the fourth click is applied by the pedal. Thanks for all your help with answering my questions. I could not have done the replacement without your help. Allen S.
