loose handlebarss

good morning

My handlebars came loose today.

I'm hoping it is a simple tightening?

How do you get to the bolts to tighten? is there a way to open the top of the shroud?

It looks like it's an access door, but I don't want to stick a screwdriver in there to pry it off if it's not supposed to.

Any help would be appreciated.

That cover is removed easily. You can slip a credit card under it and pry. You can then get to two of the clamp bolts.

HANDLEBAR 2.15

ADJUSTMENT: FLRT

FASTENER	TORQUE VALUE
Upper handlebar clamp fastener, rear: all models	16–20 ft-lbs	21.7–27.1 N·m

1. Remove trim insert from riser cover.

2. Loosen handlebar rear clamp screws one half turn.

NOTE

Measure at a right angle to the straight edge.

3. Place a straight edge across the

windshield bushings.

4. Measure from the straight edge to the front of the

handlebar just below the upper bend.

5. Rotate the handlebar in the risers until the gap measures

4 in (101.6 mm).

6. Tighten rear clamp screws to 16–20 ft-lbs (21.7–27.1 N·m).

7. Install trim insert.

I assume the insert cover is the black piece of plastic around the fork lock?

I'm told under this cover are 2 screws that need to be removed... then the shroud (riser cover?) can be removed?

from there the service instructions are clear.

plastic and 1/4 inch hex inserted into bolt heads Shroud DOES NOT have to be removed if you have hex long enough to reach bolts.

I have 14" bars on my fw so i adjusted them to be comfortable for " me". The manual basically tells you to run a straight edge up the from legs and have a specified distance from bars to the straight edge. Not critical , in "my" humble opinion.

I like the credit card approach to get cover off. I used a small screw driver and still gouged the plastic edge of cover.Have to remember that.

Thank you for the photos of the handlebar access plate. Those have made all the difference in the world as I had no idea what the full assembly looked like.

I'll use my plastic automobile door trim removal set to get the plate off.

My bars are not loose but appear to not be centered left to right; maybe my eyes are just crossed.

Curious about your 14" bars. What kind are they, and did you install them yourself? Need the bars a bit closer and wondering if 2" more than stock would require any longer cables or is there enough slack?
