    Default Cylinder head heat

    Took a Sunday trip in the beautiful country side of South Carolina this morning,,

    Out of curiosity , I brought my thermometer to check how hot the heads got

    after about an hours ride, it measured 226 degrees on the front and 260 degrees on the rear head, aiming just above the spark plug area, Anyone who wants to comment on those values ? Normal or high, Thanks in advance

    Is this a wet head?

    Can you get an oil temp reading?

    This is going to be just as important

    I have an oil/ air cooled M8 with numbers as read by a Power Vision higher than that, tho most of the time my oil temp is constant in 235-245 range

    That's much lower than my Indian. The rear one on it is crazy hot. I tested it once and don't need to be shocked like that again. It measured 325ş with outside temp at 98ş one time if I remember correctly. Measured one other time and it was 285ş with outside temp at 94ş. I posted that on another forum so went and looked. The higher one I did later just for my own curiosity. I know it was higher and think I have it correct. After that one I just refuse to look again.

    We have done extensive heat testing, and developed mods to cool down these heat monsters to a temperature that is more conducive to producing power and engine longevity. You can see a Report at this LINK.

    Here are a couple of videos you may find useful-





    In one of them I talk a bit about measuring temps on the outside of the engine with a heat gun. It is very easy, just by changing the angle and/or distance of the gun to get temperature variations of as much as 50 degrees. i.e. I can measure the temp right above the sparplug and get 240*, and change the angle of the gun, measuring in the same spot and get 280*. So it is important to get a set distance and a set angle, and use those same parameters for comparison testing.

    As Jack mentioned, in addition to surface testing, oil temp after a solid 1 hour ride is a really good indicator of how hot the engine is getting in general.

    2024 Tri Glide! Only modifications so far - transferred Rider backrest from old 2015 Freewheeler, just added highway pegs!

    Yep, what Jack said. Either the JesCustoms analog, Harley has a digital one that has a spotty track record for lasting longer than a year...I even know some guys that pull the dip stick out and stick an oven thermometer in for occasional testing.

    Over 220 degrees for both Dino and Synthetic oils to burn of the water vapors

    Under 275 for synthetics and under 260 for dino oils is considered the normal and or acceptable See Kevin's reports on how to cool down your ride and why for a good report
