Default To the motorcycle world about seat padding?

    Hello,

I am 6'3" 350 lbs. I would like to ask if anyone has come up with a more comfortable material to put inside of there seat other than the foam that is normally in it? I have to remain at 2.5 inches or less in thickness and my seat is fixed. I'm good for less than 50 miles before my behind starts to scream at me and I have to stop and walk around before I can go again. I would love to take my stallion on some 4 to 500 mile trips but there isn't any way I can do that right now. Any suggestions.

Definitely a Gel Pad. Works wonders for those long hauls.

Check out Airhawk seat cushion . You blow it up to fit your comfort. No pump needed.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Many riders swear by the Air Hawk, almost ready to pull the trigger myself.

+2 on the AirHawk (Thanks Carla) ... I was a gel pad guy for a long time ... the AirHawk is as comfortable with less invasiveness (height and wiggle) ... takes up less room in the tour pak. I will even take it on trips I do in the truck ... helps there too.

I have found the key to being comfortable ... variety. I do a tank with the AirHawk and then one without ... keeps your b$tt confused and you can get farther down the road ... ... I'm a big guy as well ... 6'1" ish 300# and I routinely do trips of between 400 and 500 miles a day ... another thing that helps especially in the summer heat ... a sheep skin. Keeps the b$tt cooler and that really helps.

Air Hawk.. I forgot to mention... in summertime riding... I often ride with the beaded seat under the Air Hawk - gets some air circulation and further provides moving the pressure points around a little. With the cushion of the Air Hawk on top of the the beads it takes away any sharpness of the beads that might be felt against sensitive butt bones....for skinnier butts that is...

I have one of the Walmart foam rubber cushions, sell for around $25. I have two rubber inserts in one cover. I have worn out several, but they meet my need.

I also went the Walmart route, and purchased a seat cushion, that fits my stock seat for under $10.00...Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa for the whole trip!

I've always wondered about that Egg Sitter thing you see advertised on TV all the time. Sorry about the size of the image.

Try uncut/unshaven sheepskin. I have an Airhawk, (which cost way too much IMO). I prefer the sheepswool any day. I find it moulds to my arse and spreads the load. The Airhawk provides a bit of rolly-polly for me at any pressure that made any difference.

Default The factory seat on our 1st GL 1800 did the same to my bony butt.

I had a local upholstery friend remove the cover, save off some of the original foam, and replace it with memory foam from a memory foam pillow from Wal mart. (It was cheaper to buy the pillows than to buy the foam). It really made a difference. On my current trike with an Ultimate gel seat, the gel helped, but I still needed something softer to relieve the pressure on my tailbone during long rides. I borrowed my son’s Air Hawk 2 cushion and that helped more than anything else that I have tried. I even use it in my recumbent bike.
If you don't have the time to do it right, then how are you going to find time to do it over?

Had sheep's wool once, really liked it, not sure why I've not not had it since, but I'm thinking on it. So if you run into rain, do you stop and put it in the the trunk or tour pack?

I had the same feeling when I got my air hawk ... I was briefed that I needed to let a tad of the air out. I have played with the air I put in and find that just enough air to "fill the voids" between my b$tt and the seat gives me the support and comfort I need. I also will put that under my sheepskin, especially if it's really hot out ... LOL.

While on the road today I gave this a lot of thought. I am concerned that you are having these problems.

How many hours have you had in the saddle, and how long between rides? I used to ride bikes and stopped quite a few years ago: (I bit the road too often and got leery. Being very cautious is good on a motorcycle, but being scared and timid is not). After dreaming for many years I bought a Trike.

For quite a while I felt that I was _never_ going to ride without pain (skinny bum and ageing circulation). But like horse riding or cycling, your nether regions do man up with practice. But that means riding often and getting hours of "scar tissue" into your arse (and also your brain and how it thinks about the pain in your arse ).

I went from saddle to Airhawk, to sheepskin, to sheepskin, + Airhawk to _3_ layers of sheepskin (and foam), each layer cut to try to fit where I felt pressure. Then one day, from my mountain of sheepskin, I decided to cut back to one layer...and found that it was really comfy. My bum had toughed up....as it had for push-biking. (I have never ridden a horse: they scare me)

I used to, but it was not that easy: I have made up a strap system under the seat (like a beefed up Airhawk system) so I had to take off the seat before I could remove it.

My very supportive (and skilled)wife sewed me up a plastic cover (out of the offcut from a bought BBQ cover: I used to hate getting the thing on and off the BBQ)...so I have a vinyl seat cover, sheep's wool and a vinyl wool cover . The plastic over the wool is a lot thinner than the seat top and also looser, so it does not make it harder on my bum. In fact in some ways it spreads the load and is maybe _more_ comfortable than the wool! At worst I do not know it's there and on my first test ride had forgotten to think about it after 15 minutes of riding. The only reason I will not ride with it all the time is to lengthen its life.

I need to fix up a sheep's wool seat cover for her in return, with proper straps and all....then she can sew up a vinyl cover for _that_

Interesting, but a lot of 'to do', I'm not into removing the seat. If my seat becomes an aggravation, I'll consider the AirHawk and just throw it on the seat, remove it when necessary. The obvious danger in that is forgetting to do the removing, those AirHawks ain't cheap. I think it's Captron that promotes the Walmart cushion, I'd probably give that $10 deal a shot before I dropped $75 on the AirHawk.

We may be talking at cross purposes. i have a Honda Valk based trike. By removing the seat I meant using the key to unlock and lifting it up. Not really a big deal unless it's persisting with rain all of a sudden. If the Stallion seat is more difficult I would suggest some sort of elastic border to the skin...just grabs under the sides????

I have the strap system in case I stand up to stretch the legs and see my sheep flying away, a la Monty Python, down wind. From what I see of the Stallion that may less of a risk by a long way.

Yes the trouble with the Airhawk is that if you just fling it on top and walk away with a strong breeze (or do the leg stretch), you lose $$. It is _very_ light and would leave at the slightest persuasion.

I still rate the long haired sheep over foam and Airhawk: cheap (you could probably get 10 seats out of a skin, but scraps are available), NO squirm, even if you add layers, learns your bum shape, each ride, after maybe 5-10 mins in the saddle, even if you have not ridden for a week. To me seems to become more and more comfortable the longer I ride...just keeps "learning" or that may be just me adapting....dunno.

I do know that my skinny posterior (my wife rags me about my lack of a bum) has found that as good as it gets.

I am not of the OP's stature: I weigh 72Kg/160#, so I have a different problem: as I say NO padding and ageing circulation.
