Seat issues, replacing the foam with something else???

Hello,

I would like suggestions for something to REPLACE the foam inside of the seat instead of ADDING something to the top of the seat like an AirHawk seat cushion. I have plans to add a top and complete enclosure to my stallion, right now the inside of the top is 6 inches above the windshield and adding to the top of the seat will only mean I have to go taller on the top and that can't happen as it is already to tall since I'm 6'3" PLEASE help me figure out what to put INSIDE of my seat to make it a lot more comfortable.

I'm looking for suggestions for some kind of polymer or gel or something along those lines or any other suggestion to make my seat a lot more comfortable.

Thank you all for any suggestions you give me.

Have you spoken to your upholstery shop about different kinds of foam?

I personally do NOT like the gel pads - I feel them getting hard after a short time on the road. But other people find them comfortable.

I went with the AirHawk cushion but I know you say you don’t want added height...although it takes VERY little air pressure to make it comfy.

I saw on the AirHawk.net website just now that they are offering a 60-day trial period and if not satisfied return it for a full refund.

Perhaps you could remove some foam from the seat temporarily and put the AirHawk on top of the now-lower seat for a trial period.

I learned a looooong time ago that not all foam is the same!

I had a motorcycle seat with "less than ideal" padding years ago & a buddy put me onto an upholstery shop that used to be around here..

The company also made custom seats for high end aircrafts & tour busses & they suggested shaving out most of the factory foam & replacing with a"higher density" foam (of some kind).

The way he explained it is most seats use a fairly standard foam (think open cell) that compresses until it's basically flat under pressure so there's no cushion left.. The higher density based foams while more expensive only compress so far to retain the "cushion feel" which makes them more comfortable for the long haul.

I rode with buddies that had Corbin, Mustang, & a few other brand seats & every single one of them thought my seat blew theirs out of the water in terms of comfort for a fraction of the price. When I wrecked the bike a buddy bought the seat from me for $200 (about 8 years ago) & last he heard the guy who bought his bike is still rocking the same seat & loving it.

Moral of the story.. A GOOD upholstery understands the different foams advantages & disadvantages to help educate & help the customer make the best choice for them..

Just some food for thought.

I took the beast to a good saddle shop, they stripped the old foam and threw it in the trash. they glued up 3 or 4 different types of foam. they took out their electric knives and carved it all up, they have you sit on it , they mark it up carve some more have you sit on it again carve some more, this process goes on for half day. I opted for gel pad, so they cut some more. finally you get to a point where it gets comfy. put on new hide. presto seat, it takes awhile and is expensive. my but thanks me every time I get in saddle

I agree with what Trike Tech said about multiple foams / types of foams.

We just received our Gl1800 saddle back from Tom Simmons of TS Custom Seats and it is very comfortable.

Talking to Tom, he used 4 different densities on our saddle - from 40 to 100 lb densities.

Tom is very knowledgeable in seats (and motorcycles). He’s been doing seats since 1972. It might be a good idea to call him about your issues and see what he thinks.
