    Default Seat Bolt?

How important is the rear seat bolt on our trikes? After a week of trying to mount a new heated mustang seat, 76863, it's simple, the mustang back seat is longer than the OEM and there is no way to get to the bolt I'm working with Mustang now, waiting.

The seat bolt is kind of important. Anyone can just walk away with your seat if its not bolted down. The other thing is if you were to hit something with your trike, the seat could just lift up at impact and you and the seat could keep on going.

As long as your sitting on the seat you're ok......Its just that does make the seat easy for someone to walk off with it......

Maybe use Zip Ties under the seat to hold it down. Just cut to remove the seat. Good Luck

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

The new seats can be taken with off with your fingers anyway. If the seat is going flying, I will probably have already flown

The stock height of the nose bracket on my Ultimate Seat prevented the seat from moving forward enough to fully slide underneath the mounting tab to secure the front of the seat, and also the rear seat bracket didn't sit directly above the mounting hole.

If your nose bracket is fastened to the seat with two screws like mine is, then remove those screws (replace w/longer Grade 8 Screws) and then insert stainless washers until you shim the bracket to a height where it allows the seat to slide forward enough to securely and fully engage the front mounting tab. Also make sure that you can position the rear mounting bracket directly above the screw hole. Don't forget the Blue Loctite!!

This worked for me, however, ymmv. Wish ya the best.

I have the H-D Road Zepplin air seat. It is way bigger than the stock seat. I also have a flashing tail light relay and a bunch more wires in that location. Getting to that bolt is almost impossible. I just don't bolt it down anymore. I'm not a bit worried about someone stealing it - who's going to know it's not bolted down? Who's F#&%$ing nutz to even try to steal it?

TrainingWheels is right - you're going flying whether you have the seat bolted or not.

I keep thinking about getting a tour pak relocator kit from Dennis at DK Customs.

I keep seeing the seat flying off of that chopper Jesse James built. I think he was on his way to Sturges. He lifted his butt off the seat and away it went. They forgot to bolt it on.

Under normal situations, I think the rear screw probably keeps honest people honest and your seat where it should be ... although ... anyone with a Phillips could take it anyway.

My big concern would be in the even of an accident where maybe broadsided the seat would come loose, but, again ... if the seat comes loose you are probably already slip sliding away.

Interesting situation ... wonder if anyone has done any testing ... my bottom line thought is that manufacturers wouldn't spend the nickel on the seat screw if there wasn't a reason for it ...

No testing, but since I've got a backrest mounted and the passenger grab bars holding the seat in place, I can't imagine it going anywhere unless I've already been tossed off the trike. The rear screw is a pain to reach though, so I took a 3.5" threaded bolt that fit into the hole and then put two nuts towards the bottom of the bolt as a "stop" using red locktite. Then I added a knob "thingy" (not the true technical name, but you get the idea) that makes it easy to reach without digging in the small space between the seat and tourpak and very easy to turn. As far as a phillips head screw stopping theft, I don't think so. If someone wants you seat, they'll get it.

I suppose not a lot of seat makers use bolts or screws with a nose bracket on the front of their seat pans. Too bad, because this would allow more adjustability to move the seat further forward on the front mounting tab when the rear bracket extends past the rear screw hole.

OK, last word. I hope. I bought the short screw for the '18's and older. Turns out their aluminum and no room for fingers to get it in place. Sooooo, I need to go buy a steal one (might get 3 or 4 as long as I'm there) so I can use a magnetic screw driver to get it down there. Really nice people at Mustang, really helpful and polite. I appreciated it.

Now for the easy part. I've got to get the heat hooked up:-( I'm having Tripp's HD do it:-) Thanks for all the input:-)

Not sure what to tell you about the front mount, but I found this rear seat bolt from Custom Dynamics. You can tighten it with your fingers, no screwdriver needed. It's easier to get lined up and started.

That looks like the standard bolt for the '19's and '20's. The Mustang seats hangs over it because they are longer than the OEM seat and that bolt would punch a hole in the Mustang seat if used. Your correct, they work great on the stock seat.

I bought a 12" Phillips to get to the bolt. Made it easier but still a pain then I bought DKs kit to relocate the tour pack and moved it back a couple inches. Problem solved.

Just a question as I did not see it mentioned here - you are opening the tour pack top when you are removing or installing the seat screw. I had someone who was trying to access the screw without opening the tour pak lid.

If you are then disregard the comment.

I also have a road zeppelin seat. I just drilled a hole in the body where the new location would be put one of the blind nuts that they use on the Road Glide fairing to hold the windshield on. Put a screw in it and it works fine.
